Spring PSAs

Spring PSAs

  • Ticks: The tick populations are active due to the recent warm weather. Deer Ticks have been found recently at NH Audubon Wildlife Sanctuaries. Please take precautions while using the trails and check yourself during and after your visit. Deer ticks carry Lyme Disease and other diseases and are a public health hazard. The most effective ways to prevent attachment include wearing light-colored clothing (for visual detection), tucking pants into socks, and wearing repellent containing DEET or natural alternatives such as cedar oil tick repellent. For more information about tick identification, prevention, and removal, check out Tick Free New Hampshire.
  • Slippery Trails: Trails at this time of year are often wet due to the melting of snow, rain events, vegetation still not being leafed out to transpire water, and may be more sensitive to recreation impacts. Be aware of potentially wet and slippery conditions. Please use trails with care and safety in mind, given the ground conditions of spring!
    • In order to track the needs of our properties, we have developed a Trail Conditions Report. When you visit a NH Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary, please fill out the brief form with any commentary on our trails, from “all clear!” to specific follow-up work that needs to be completed. This is especially helpful when there are high counts – or complicated tangles – of blowdowns that need careful attention with chainsaws or larger infrastructure needs. The purpose of this form is to have something both easy to report and useful for planning follow-up efforts. Using this form is highly helpful to our Conservation Lands Manager and NH Audubon’s ability to prioritize trail clearing efforts and trail infrastructure improvements.
