We’re thrilled to welcome a new animal ambassador to our wildlife education team at New Hampshire Audubon: a juvenile Turkey Vulture with a curious personality and a fascinating backstory!
This young vulture comes to us from Connecticut, where he was found on the UConn Storrs campus. It was quickly determined that he is imprinted on humans, meaning he was exposed to people at a very young age and now identifies with humans rather than his own species. Because of this, he is non-releasable and cannot survive in the wild, but he now has a permanent home with us, where he will help educate the public about vultures and their vital role in the ecosystem.
Though still a juvenile, our new vulture ambassador is already showing off his inquisitive nature. He’s been busy exploring his new surroundings, curiously checking out every perch, nook, and enrichment item we’ve placed in his habitat. While he’s still settling in, he’s adjusting well and growing more comfortable each day.
We’re excited for you to meet him and learn more about these often misunderstood scavengers. Turkey Vultures play an essential role in the environment by cleaning up carrion and preventing the spread of disease.
Stop by the McLane Center and say hello to our newest feathered friend — he’s ready for visitors!
