Earth Day Volunteering at the Massabesic Center

(by Kimmie Whiteman)

The Massabesic Center is so grateful to have hosted students and staff from SNHU, including Amanda, Rebecca, Fatima, and Chantel on Earth Day for a volunteer workday! SNHU joined Massabesic Center Volunteers Walt Milne, Paul Hasenfuss, Bob Hamm, Ewan, and Oliver to celebrate Earth Day by honoring the big elm tree in our South Hayfield Loop.

The Elm Tree was dying from Dutch Elm Disease and beginning to pose a safety risk to hikers, so our staff felled it late last fall. With the snow finally melted, this stellar Earth Day volunteer team moved all of the woody debris out of the field and into the forest understory, where it will provide brushy cover habitat for wildlife while it decomposes and cycles nutrients back into the ecosystem.

Thank you to our volunteers!
