Pardon Our Dust: Massabesic All Persons Trail Construction Continues

Pardon Our Dust: Massabesic All Persons Trail Construction Continues

The Massabesic Center’s trail system is getting a new look! The exciting construction that started last September is ramping back up in May, 2025! Thanks to a Recreational Trails Program Grant administered by the New Hampshire Bureau of Trails, we are creating easier access through our sanctuary gardens and trails with a flat, even, hard-packed stone dust surface, navigable by wheelchairs and strollers.

The incoming route through the gardens will cross a new bridge spanning pristine, shaded vernal pool habitat. It will connect with the South Hayfield Loop and culminate at the Milne Pond Outdoor Classroom. We’re utilizing this opportunity to enhance other aspects of our hiking trail experience and to allow for critical habitat restoration in the sanctuary.

During the full month of May, you may encounter disturbed, uneven trail beds and heavy machinery blocking your way. Trail closure signs will be posted as applicable. Visitors must follow all posted signs and stay outside of visibly disrupted areas, even when workers are not actively on site. These requirements are for your safety and to allow our trail team to stay on schedule. To protect fragile habitat, do not go “off trail” to pass; please turn around and find a detour.

Plan ahead; Yellow, Red, and Fox trails, which are managed by Manchester Water Works, will remain open. To access these trails and avoid the construction on the Massabesic Center’s sanctuary, follow the main road to begin your hike at one of the trailheads on either end of Audubon Way (Fox lot or Deerfield/Bunton Place). Use caution when driving or walking near construction vehicles. Parking at the kayak launch on Route 28 also provides access to the Battery Point Trail. View Manchester Water Work’s trail system maps here.

Updated New Hampshire Audubon maps and trail signs will be installed this summer; thank you for your patience during our transition. Temporary maps with current open routes are available in the center, posted on our kiosks, and on our website.

We are excited to partner once again with Lew Shelly of Snowhawk LLC for this universal trail construction.
