Happy Earth Day

Happy Earth Day

(by Doug Bechtel, NH Audubon President)

What’s your favorite season?” I always find that hard to answer because I love all four, and feel lucky to live somewhere we experience the full range of seasonal conditions. The change in seasons always comes at the right time for me too – meaning that any season lasting more than it should, gets wearisome.

Right now, as we’ve entered spring, I feel so much relief and joy in the returning light and, of course, bird songs! The first day I hear an Eastern Phoebe, Hermit Thrush, or Killdeer always gives me a jolt of renewal. I also feel lucky to live somewhere that offers a wildlife encounter every single day, no matter where I am. Birds are ubiquitous, beautiful, noisy (okay, melodious might be better), and active.

As you consider Earth Day this year, think about the joy of spring and all it offers. And also remember that Earth Day means that World Migratory Bird Day is right around the corner (May 10, 2025). Earth Day is like the opening day of baseball season; the start of something good every single year. So go outside and watch and listen, and celebrate the returning birds this Earth Day.
