Celebrate Bat Appreciation All Year

(by Kimmie Whiteman)

In celebration of Bat Week – did you know the Massabesic Center’s historic Broad Barn houses an important maternity roost site for Big Brown Bats (Eptesicus fuscus)? As you make your way out of the sanctuary at sunset in the summer, look to the sky to see them feasting on mosquitoes and other insects!

Photo of a Brown Bat in the Massabesic Center barn, which staff safely helped back up to the bat roost area. (Do not handle bats without proper safety gloves. You can find “Information and Tips for Dealing with New Hampshire Bats” on NHFG’s website as well.)

Are you interested in participatory science? You can join our volunteer team and monitor the health and productivity of our colony by conducting visual counts between June and August. Find information on our Volunteer webpage. To learn more about other bat conservation efforts in New Hampshire, visit NHFG’s Bat Count webpage.
