Monarch Butterfly Spotlight for Hispanic American Heritage Month

(by Zoe Dawson)

September 15-October 15 marks the nationwide celebration of Hispanic American Heritage Month by recognizing the ongoing cultural impact and contributions of Latin and Hispanic people in America. This special month happens to coincide with our conservation work here at NH Audubon as we tag Monarch butterflies to track their migratory journey to Mexico. This species is an important cultural symbol of transformation, resilience, and soul in Hispanic and Latin culture and their arrival back to Mexico aligns with Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) celebrations of ancestry in November. We are looking forward to tracking these amazing journeys through our Motus project – stay tuned for more about this in October. It is an honor for us to steward such a culturally significant and inspiring insect and we invite you to join us in learning, gardening, and advocating for these pollinators this Hispanic American Heritage month and beyond.
