Snowy Owls are Back in NH: Please View Respectfully

Snowy Owls are magnificent birds and attract considerable attention when they visit New Hampshire this time of year. While observing these birds is exciting, it’s crucial for viewers and photographers to maintain a respectful distance. Getting too close can stress the birds, forcing them to expend valuable energy that is better used for hunting. Consider these tips if you have the privilege of encountering a Snowy Owl:

  • Keep a distance of at least 100 feet. If viewing from a car is possible, please do so. Try using binoculars to see or zoom lenses to capture a photo.
  • If the bird reacts to you by staring, widening their eyes, or extending their neck, you are too close and need to back up.
  • Don’t forget to follow private property and area-closed signage.

Please be respectful of these birds during this vulnerable time. Learn more about Snowy Owls and read our full viewing guidelines here.
