As winter fades, New Hampshire’s landscape is coming to life with early signs of spring. Buds are swelling on trees, Canada mayflower is emerging, and on warm days, honeybees and mourning cloak butterflies make their first appearances.
Birdsong fills the air as American Robins, Red-winged Blackbirds, and Song Sparrows return, while migrating waterfowl pass overhead. At dusk, American Woodcocks perform their dramatic courtship displays. Vernal pools are also alive with sound – spring peepers and wood frogs are calling, signaling the start of amphibian breeding season.
With longer days and warming temperatures, now is the perfect time to get outside and witness the season’s arrival. What signs of spring have you noticed?
