The Massabesic Center’s trail system is getting a new look! We are thrilled to announce the beginning of construction on our All Persons Trail, which is slated to start in August 2024. Thanks to a Recreational Trails Program Grant administered by the New Hampshire Bureau of Trails, this enhanced portion of our Field Trail will provide a flat, even, hardpacked stone dust surface, navigable by wheelchairs and strollers. The addition of a new accessible spur will provide access through our gardens and shaded viewing of pristine vernal pool habitat before connecting with the field trails and culminating at the far side of the fields at the grassy gathering area at Milne Pond Outdoor Classroom.
We’ll be utilizing this opportunity to enhance other aspects of our sanctuary trails. Be on the lookout for the permanent closure of half of the “Y” spur at the entrance to the Yellow Trail. This closure will allow for critical habitat restoration and create a streamlined map route that will enhance your hiking experience. You will notice posted signs for the closures, along with a field route no longer being mowed, and natural materials such as large logs, brush, and stones blocking the closed forest route.
During the construction period, which may extend through late September, we ask for your patience with trail closures and detours. Be aware of heavy machinery on the trails, in the parking lot, and along Audubon Way, and obey all posted signs. We are excited to partner once again with Lew Shelly of Snowhawk LLC for this universal trail construction. Stay tuned for new trail maps of the full Massabesic Center Sanctuary, to be released this fall!
