Joy of Birding News: Still in Winter… but Looking Toward Spring

The piles of snow outside (and the groundhog’s shadow earlier this month) remind us that winter is still firmly in place. Yet as James Freitas shares in his latest article, this season offers its own rewards. If you’ve never headed to the coast in search of sea ducks, now is the perfect time.

Winter also has a way of inspiring creative (and sometimes slightly wild) reasons to bundle up and head out birding. The Superbowl of Birding proved once again there is always something to see. Be sure to read the WILD CARDinal team’s account of winning the Townie Award this year, along with one from your editor, who didn’t bring home a trophy but still had an exciting day.

There is much to look forward to in the months ahead, from nesting season to the arrival of migrating waterfowl. In anticipation of spring, I’m delighted to share Pamela Hunt’s two-part guide to birding in Concord, New Hampshire. You may already know Horseshoe Pond, but I suspect you’ll discover a few new places to explore. It’s like having a personal birding itinerary written just for you by the state ornithologist.

Thank you to everyone who participated in NH Audubon’s Backyard Winter Bird Survey. While it will take time to compile and analyze the data, we’ve already posted a photo gallery from the weekend. Don’t miss it!
