Build It and They Will Come: Why Create a Pollinator Garden?

Build It and They Will Come: Why Create a Pollinator Garden?

(by Diane De Luca)

Our “Build It And They Will Come” series begins today as we answer the question, “Why Create a Pollinator Garden?

Pollinators, including bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, and hummingbirds, are essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems. They facilitate the reproduction of over 75% of flowering plants and nearly 35% of global food crops. Unfortunately, habitat loss, pesticide use, climate change, and disease are putting many pollinator species at risk.

By creating a pollinator garden, you can contribute to conservation efforts while supporting biodiversity. Even small gardens provide critical food sources and shelter for these vital species.

Now, why it matters?

  • Food Security: Pollinators are responsible for 1 in 3 bites of food we consume, including fruits, vegetables, and nuts.
  • Biodiversity Support: Native plants rely on pollinators for reproduction, forming the foundation of many ecosystems.
  • Ecosystem Health: Healthy pollinator populations benefit other wildlife, contributing to a balanced environment.
  • Conservation Impact: Providing native plants and reducing pesticide use can directly improve pollinator survival.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll guide you through the steps to plan, plant, and maintain your own pollinator-friendly habitat – a small but significant step toward protecting our planet’s biodiversity!
