Students at Amherst Middle School are taking a stand against water pollution through their innovative art display. Under the guidance of art teacher Brandie Pettus, students in her spring art classes have collaborated on a mural project that incorporates weaving, printmaking, collage, and drawing techniques.

The project aims to raise awareness about the impact of trash on New Hampshire’s waterways and local ecosystems. By utilizing recycled materials, students not only showcase their artistic talents but also highlight the importance of addressing environmental issues through creative expression.

The captivating mural, titled “The Waterways Project,” was initially exhibited at the Amherst Town Library alongside works from other schools in the district. Now, thanks to a collaboration with New Hampshire Audubon, the mural finds a new home at the Massabesic Center in Auburn, NH. The public is invited to view the artwork, engage with the students’ message, and explore the center’s Nature Land, gardens, and hiking trails, perfect for birdwatching and enjoying the serene Lake Massabesic.

For those eager to witness the students’ impactful artwork firsthand, the Massabesic Center, located at 26 Audubon Way in Auburn, NH, welcomes visitors Wednesday-Saturday from 11am-5pm, with free admission to all amenities. The exhibition will be on display through December 2024, offering a lasting opportunity to appreciate the students’ dedication to environmental advocacy through art.
