Welcome Sheryl Horton, the new Director of Education for New Hampshire Audubon.

Originally from Minnesota, but most recently relocating from Northwest Colorado, Sheryl is a field geologist turned educator focused on inspiring curiosity and action in environmental education, science, and conservation. She earned her undergraduate degree in Geology at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota and enjoyed a fulfilling career in environmental field geology throughout the Rocky Mountain region, focused on Phase II Site Assessments and Remediation of contaminated surface and ground water and soils.

She went back to school to earn a Masters in Education with a certifcation in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Learners from Adams State University in Colorado. As an educator, Sheryl has worked in urban, rural, and statewide organizations to bring people outside and experience the world through new eyes. She has worked for Colorado Parks & Wildlife on the SOLE (Schools and Outdoor Learning Environments) program in 50 schools around the state, Denver Water’s Education team serving 1.4 million users (the largest water utility in Colorado), and most recently Yampatika, an environmental education organization serving Northwest Colorado.

At Yampatika, Sheryl led the School Programs department, expanding its reach by nearly 150% in four years while building partnerships and outreach to promote impactful experiential and place-based learning.

Sheryl is a lover of the outdoors outside of work, too. In her free time, she travels the world for wildlife photography opportunities (especially herps and birds), backpacking and hiking adventures, snowshoeing, and snowboarding. She also enjoys board games, reading, mentoring youth, and partner dancing when it’s time to be indoors.
