November is Native American Heritage Month. This is an important time to honor the past and present history, culture, and contributions of the original people of what is now called North America. New Hampshire is on the land of the Abenaki, comprised of several tribes, and many of the beautiful natural places in our state still hold Abenaki names, such as Massabesic Lake (massa nbes ek: “to the great pond”), Monadnock (minoria denak: “the bare or smooth mountain”), and Lake Winnipesaukee (wiwninbesaki: “the lake between or around land or islands”) to name just a few. NH Audubon is honored to continue the stewardship of these cherished lands and to provide opportunities for all people to form connections to the natural world through our programs and wildlife sanctuaries around the state.
