Open Positions at NH Audubon

Education Assistant

LOCATION: McLane Center – Concord, NH, Massabesic Center – Auburn, NH and various locations throughout the state

COMPENSATION: Compensation for this hourly, part-time position is $16 – $19 an hour, commensurate with experience. This position is also eligible for vacation and sick time, paid holidays, tax deferred retirement plan, a free NH Audubon annual membership ($60 value), access to pro deals and employee discounts. Mileage for travel to programs is reimbursed at current Federal rates.  

HOURS: 25 hours per week, part-time, non-exempt (hourly paid) staff position. Weekend availability needed. Hours may vary according to needs.

SCHEDULE: Schedule will vary according to needs and seasons and includes weekends and occasional evenings. Weekend hours are a requirement for this position. Additional hours may be required as necessary.   

FUNCTION: This position will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon: to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by implementing educational programs for school groups, preschool children, adults, teachers, and families.  This position assists with care and management of captive animals including feeding, cleaning, and training.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES: 

Assisting with the coordination and implementation of educational programs at various locations throughout the state.

  • Delivering programs to local schools and institutions.
  • Preparing, learning and reviewing educational programs for presentation at informal events such as festivals and birthday parties.
  • Maintaining program statistics database and providing event feedback to supervisor.
  • Assisting with the development and evaluation of programs and exhibits.
  • Assisting with the growth and implementation of marketing efforts in support of educational programming.

Assisting with care and management of captive animals.

  • Feeding all resident animals according to the schedule and protocol
  • Cleaning all resident animal enclosures according to the schedule and protocol
  • Organizing and cleaning animal rooms and preparation areas.
  • Documenting all activities on animal care on the information forms in each room.
  • Maintaining inventory of animal food products, including frozen mice, fish, quail, fresh vegetables and fruit, and notifying the Animal Care Coordinator about low supplies.
  • Communicating with the Animal Care Coordinator regarding questions or problems with the animals.
  • Greeting incidental visitors and providing outreach and general information about NH Audubon and Centers.

Performing other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education: High School diploma required. Bachelor’s degree in Natural History, Environmental Education, Education or related field, or equivalent experience preferred.

Experience: Two to three years’ experience with environmental education. Experience with public speaking and delivering presentations to groups of multiple ages. Demonstrated ability to make independent and coordinated decisions. Must have experience with MS Office products. Animal care experience preferred.  Curriculum development experience desirable.

Paradise Point Lead Naturalist – Seasonal

LOCATION: Paradise Point Nature Center, Hebron, NH  

HOURS: 35 hours per week, non-exempt (hourly paid). Hours will vary depending on Center needs.  

SCHEDULE: Seasonal position, full-time preferred, with part-time considered for the right candidate. May 16 – September 2, 2024, possible hours available starting early-mid May for Center preparations advance of opening and after the end date to help clean the center. Anticipated schedule: Weekends, Monday, Tuesday, and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with some evening hours. Days off: Wednesdays & Thursdays. Expected to work most holidays and weekends with one 5-day block of time off during the summer with center coordinator’s approval. 

FUNCTION: This position is based out of Paradise Point Nature Center located on the beautiful north shore of Newfound Lake in Hebron, NH. It will support New Hampshire Audubon’s mission (to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people) by aiding in center operations, boat rentals, and program coordination/delivery to area residents, visitors, and neighboring camps. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Programming & Exhibits – 60%  

  • Spearheading program promotion, marketing, and facilitation of regularly occurring public programs at Paradise Point 
  • Marketing and facilitating interpretive hikes and hands-on discovery activities for children, adults, and families 
  • Assisting with the facilitation of the Red Barn Speaker Series Tuesday evenings  
  • Leading canoe tours and guided paddles on Newfound Lake 
  • Planning and implementing outreach naturalist programs   
  • Maintaining and updating exhibits for the Newfound Center 
  • Organizing, maintaining, and inventorying education program equipment 

Boats & Trails – 30%  

  • Assist visitors with boat rentals including payment processing  
  • Reporting and/or performing basic trail maintenance as needed 
  • Organizing, maintaining, and inventorying boating equipment (PFDs, paddles, etc.) 

Other related duties as assigned – 10%  

  • Greeting and assisting visitors to the Center with general orientation and describing the benefits of NH Audubon membership  
  • Assisting with general cleaning and housekeeping duties of the center (sweeping, mopping, restocking toilet paper, etc.)

QUALIFICATIONS:  

Education: Some higher education coursework completed in adventure education, environmental education, conservation, biology, natural history, or related field required; bachelor’s degree preferred.  

Experience: Two years’ experience working with the general public in situations requiring an array of different skills with demonstrated ability to make independent and coordinated decisions. Must have ARC or AHA Standard First Aid certification and CPR certification or equivalent, or willingness to obtain certifications prior to the start of employment. 

Interpretive and public speaking experience is a plus, along with canoe and kayak paddling experience. ARC First Responder or Lifeguard certification or equivalent desirable. Knowledge of natural sciences is a plus, especially in ornithology, ecology, biology, geology, or other related fields.

Ability to participate in moderately active programming including hiking, kayaking, and canoeing as necessary.

Assistant Camp Director - McLane Center

Do you have a passion for wildlife and the outdoors? We provide a positive, fun working environment with plenty of opportunities to develop new leadership and teaching skills. Our Assistant Camp Director position will provide you with the tools and training to assist in leading a nature camp, provide effective youth leadership programming, and manage the safety and well-being of campers and staff. NH Audubon believes in an inquiry-based, student-led approach to our teaching methods which is aimed at promoting curiosity of the natural world.

The Assistant Camp Directors will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon: to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by planning and conducting weekly lessons and activities for Leader-in-Training campers on environmental education and team building, assisting with coordination of daily nature-based activities and weekly all-camp games, training and managing camp staff, managing camper and staff safety and well-being, and supervising campers during extended care programs.

SCHEDULE: June 2nd – August 29th, 2025 (up to 13 weeks total: one week of onboarding, two weeks of all-staff training, nine weeks of active camp sessions, and one week of wrap-up duties).

FUNCTION: This position will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon: to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by assisting with the operation and program coordination of an established environmental day camp sponsored by New Hampshire Audubon. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Attend all training sessions prior to the camp season. 
  • Assist with and leads staff training. 
  • Organize and review camper forms and maintain camper records (e.g., incident reports, medication administration, daily attendance, etc.). 
  • Ensure these forms are properly completed by Camp Educators and signed by parents/guardians
  • Manages camper check-in/check-out procedures.
  • Coordination of ‘Leaders-in-Training’ program. 
  • Recommend purchases and maintain camp supplies and equipment. 
  • Oversee daily camp operations including staff supervision. Perform the role of Acting Camp Director when Camp Director is off-site.
  • Develop, facilitate, and monitor camp activities.
  • Assist instructors with lesson development.
  • Act as liaison and maintain good relationships with campers’ parents.
  • Coordinate all-camp programs and activities (e.g., Monday Morning Circle, Camper Contract, Friday afternoon all-camp games, etc.).
  • Rearrange groups/schedule or lead camper groups during instructor absences.

Experience: Must have experience working in a camp setting and teaching children ages 5-15; demonstrated ability to develop creative environmental education activities.  Proven leadership and supervisory experience required. Ability to make both independent and collaborative decisions required.

Certifications: Must have American Red Cross or American Heart Association Standard First Aid and CPR certification or equivalent, Medication Management for Unlicensed Persons in Early Care and Education Settings course, or willingness to obtain certifications. If you do not have these certifications upon hiring, NH Audubon will pay for or reimburse you for the online versions of these courses ($37 value for First Aid/CPR, $20 value for Medication Management). Professional development opportunity provided to complete ACA’s New Camp Director Orientation if new to position.

Camp Educator - Seasonal

The Camp Educator position will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon: to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by creating and sustaining a respectful, fun, and safe camp culture by facilitating positive youth development activities and games, assisting with camp coordination of daily and weekly nature-based, all-camp activities, and supervising campers during extended care programs.   

LOCATION: McLane Center (Concord, NH) or Massabesic Center (Auburn, NH)

  • Day Camp (9 weeks): June 23rd – August 22nd

FUNCTION: This position will entail coordinating daily games and activities for campers in environmental education topics, facilitating daily nature-based activities, and supervision of campers, ranging in age from 5-15, during entirety of the camp day. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Attends all training sessions prior to the camp season. 
  • Oversees and maintains responsibility for camper safety, well-being, and fun. 
  • Develops and implements daily environmental activities for 5-6, 7-9, or 10-12-year-old campers. 
  • Prepares lesson plans and/or thematic outdoor activities to share during camp training. Uses provided lesson plans to teach environmental topics.
  • Assists with and facilitates live ambassador animal presentations (training provided).
  • Provides first aid to campers as needed.  
  • Communicates effectively and respectfully to campers and parents.  
  • Communicates clearly and effectively to other staff verbally and in writing about camper behavior, safety, and other camp activity feedback. This includes properly completing incident and behavioral forms ASAP when camper incidents occur.
  • Maintains program supplies in good condition. Performs facility and supply cleaning duties as assigned. 
  • Will participate in weekly staff meetings (Friday afternoons) and annual camp evaluation and cleanup at the end of the session (dependent on contract).

Must have or be willing to obtain an online American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic First Aid certification or equivalent. If you do not already have this certification when hired, NH Audubon will reimburse or pay you for the online versions of these training courses. Experience teaching or providing care to children, preferably in a camp setting, and demonstrated ability to implement and lead creative activities preferred.
