Director of Education

POSITION SUMMARY: NH Audubon is seeking a dynamic and visionary Director of Education to lead our educational initiatives, fostering a culture of environmental literacy and stewardship across New Hampshire. This strategic leader will oversee the development and implementation of innovative educational programs, manage a dedicated team of staff and volunteers, and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders, including schools, community groups, and grant funders. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of environmental education in our state and inspire the next generation of scientists and stewards.  

TITLE: Director of Education  

LOCATION: Primary office at NH Audubon Headquarters at the McLane Center in Concord. Also supervises staff at the Massabesic Center in Auburn and the Newfound Center in Hebron.  

HOURS: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm, one-hour lunch. Additional evening and weekend hours required as necessary.  

SCHEDULE: 35 hours per week, full-time exempt (salary paid) staff position. Schedule will vary according to programmatic and staffing needs.  

FUNCTION: This position will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon, to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by leading and innovating NH Audubon’s environmental education initiatives, fostering environmental stewardship through strategic program development, stakeholder engagement, and effective team management. The role involves developing impactful educational programs, securing funding, and building strong partnerships to advance the organization’s mission.  

LEADERSHIP: Reports to the NH Audubon President

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:   

Strategic Leadership and Program Development: (approximately 40%)

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive environmental education strategy that aligns with NH Audubon’s mission and goals. 
  • Lead the creation of innovative, engaging, and impactful educational programs and curricula for current and future audiences, incorporating Next Generation Science Standards and other best practices. 
  • Identify emerging trends and opportunities in environmental education to ensure NH Audubon remains at the forefront of the field. 
  • Develop department budget, approve expenses, collaborate with Communications staff to create and implement. marketing solutions to meet budgetary goals, and track progress toward fiscal year revenue targets.
  • In collaboration with the Grants Manager, identify and pursue funding opportunities from foundations, corporations, and government agencies to support educational programs.  
  • In collaboration with the Grants Manager write compelling grant proposals and reports that align with stakeholder needs and demonstrate program impact.  
  • Track project implementation and usage of grant funds for all department grant funded projects.  

Staff Management: (approximately 30%)

  • Recruit, train, and supervise a diverse team of year-round education staff, seasonal staff (indirectly), and volunteers, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment. 
  • Provide ongoing professional development opportunities for staff to enhance their skills and knowledge. 
  • Improve current systems for the lifecycle of programs from initial inquiry through scheduling to impact reporting. Manage and mitigate risks appropriately; train others to make safe decisions.   

Program Facilitation, Evaluation, and Reporting: (approximately 20%)

  • Support School Programs Coordinator, Public Programs Coordinator, and Education Assistants with programmatic scheduling, facilitating programs for youth and adults as needed.   
  • Support Camp Programs Manager with conflict resolution between campers, seasonal staff, and camp families/parents. Take an active role in developing, editing, and implementing staff training and policy manuals and facilitating seasonal staff training.
  • Support Animal Programs Curator in establishing and implementing animal ambassador policies, individual care guidelines, renewing state and federal permits, acquiring new ambassadors, and training animal care volunteers and interns.  
  • Establish metrics and evaluation tools to assess the efficacy of educational programs and impact tracking to fully communicate our education stories to the public.
  • Prepare regular reports for internal and external audiences, highlighting successes, challenges, and opportunities for growth.  
  • Use data and feedback to continuously improve program quality and relevance.  

Stakeholder Engagement and Relationship Building: (approximately 10%)

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with schools, community organizations, affinity groups, and other key stakeholders to expand the reach and impact of NH Audubon’s educational programs. 
  • Serve as the primary liaison for the department and organization with school administrators and community leaders, advocating for environmental education initiatives. 
  • Develop and manage partnerships with local, state, and national organizations to enhance program offerings and resources. 
  • Collaborate with partner organizations to facilitate professional development opportunities for NH teachers and informal educators. 
  • Represent NH Audubon at partner and stakeholder events.

QUALIFICATIONS:  

Education: Bachelor’s degree in environmental education, science education, environmental science, or a related field required (master’s degree preferred).    

Experience:  

  • Minimum of five years of experience in the environmental education field with an additional minimum of 3 years running a department that includes program development and staff management.
  • Demonstrated success in building partnerships.
  • Knowledge of NGSS and experience developing and evaluating effective science-based curricula. 
  • Proven expertise in successfully leading and inspiring a diverse team of individuals with a range of skillsets. 
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Capable of standing, stretching, bending, walking, lifting, and transporting a maximum of 25 pounds.  
  • Must have the tolerance to spend time outdoors in variable weather conditions and in the presence of biting insects
  • Ability to hike over varied terrain for short distances.   
  • Must be able to climb stairs
  • Must be physicallyand mentally capable of leading groups of children and adults in an outdoor setting, at times including moderate hiking.   
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.  
  • CPR and first aid certification required (training can be provided). 

COMPENSATION:   

  • $55,000 – $60,000 annual salary, commensurate with experience.

Nature Store Manager

LOCATION: McLane Center, Concord, NH

HOURS: 25 hours per week, part-time, non-exempt (hourly paid) staff position.  Additional hours may be required as necessary. Schedule may vary according to needs.

SCHEDULE: Wednesdays to Saturdays 10:45am – 5:00pm

FUNCTION: This position will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon: to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by overseeing all aspects of the store operations, providing a quality service for members and the general public, and generating a profit center for the organization.  Responsibilities include budgeting, inventory, purchasing, and marketing.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Actively manage and oversee the McLane Center and Massabesic Center Nature Stores in order to provide a quality service for members and the general public and generate a mission-driven brand merchandising center for the organization by: 

  • Developing and monitoring annual budget including sales, purchases and expenses.
  • Developing and maintaining a vision and focus for the store consistent with NHA’s mission and strengths in collaboration with NHA management.
  • Researching current retail market trends appropriate to a nature store environment and developing contacts for purchasing mission related inventory.
  • Assessing and evaluating existing inventory and remarketing items to sell.
  • Maintaining a working knowledge of current products, especially as related to birds, bird watching and bird feeding.
  • Maintaining a reputation for the store as a source of expertise on mission-related product.
  • Developing and creating displays for inventory and rotating stock to create visually pleasing merchandise presentations.
  • Ordering product, verifying, pricing, stocking, displaying and, when necessary, returning inventory.
  • Establishing and nurturing financial partnerships with local vendors by displaying their mission-appropriate merchandise in the store.
  • Developing consignment relationships with local craftspeople in order to increase inventory and sales.
  • Managing and booking local artist to exhibit their work in our centers
  • Developing and executing marketing strategies and promotional materials.
  • Researching advertising avenues including low cost or cost free, submitting store advertisements and ensuring quality and accuracy of advertising content.
  • Recruiting, training, scheduling and evaluating store volunteers/employees.
  • Processing special orders, on-line orders and mail orders.
  • Responding to customer inquiries via phone, email and in person.
  • Working with the NHA web master to create an on-line store.
  • Promoting NHA membership whenever possible.
  • Greeting, assisting and directing visitors to other NHA programs areas.
  • Fielding questions from the public and from private event rentals.
  • Performing light housekeeping duties to maintain a clean and safe store environment.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Experience: Three to five years retail and/or wholesale management experience required; experience in volunteer management preferred with demonstrated ability to make independent and coordinated decisions.  Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, management and supervisory skills with the ability to work effectively within a diverse community.  Must have experience with MS Office products and database programs; basic knowledge of natural history desirable.  

Skills, Traits and Characteristics Necessary for Success: Requires exceptional interpersonal skills, attention to detail, good problem-solving skills, solid communication skills and a high degree of organization.  Must have the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, a positive attitude, excellent customer service skills, ability to work independently, and a professional and courteous manner.  Familiarity with birds and the natural environment preferred.

Physical Demands: To perform the essential functions of the position, the following applies: requires standing, stretching, bending, walking, lifting and transporting a minimum of 50 pounds.  Must be able to climb stairs as well as be physically and mentally capable of assisting customers in a public setting. 

COMPENSATION: Compensation for this hourly, part time position is $17 – $18 an hour; commensurate with experience. Massabesic Center Coordinator

TITLE: Massabesic Center Coordinator

LOCATION: Massabesic Center, Auburn, NH

HOURS: 25 hours per week, part-time, non-exempt (hourly paid) staff position.  Additional hours may be required as necessary. Schedule may vary according to needs.

SCHEDULE: Wednesday 10:45-5, Thursday 10:45-5, Friday 10:45-5, Saturday 10:45-5

FUNCTION: This position will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon: to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by presenting as the face of the Massabesic Center, providing quality customer service to visitors and the general public, overseeing the Nature Shop, and generating memberships and sales to benefit the organization.  Responsibilities include greeting visitors, keeping working knowledge of center and organization activities, upholding a tidy and presentable visitor space, conducting retail sales, and maintaining store inventory.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Oversee the Massabesic Center Front Desk and Nature Store to provide a quality service for members and the public and generate a mission-driven brand merchandising center for the organization by:

  • Greeting, assisting, and directing visitors to other NHA programs areas. 
  • Responding to customer inquiries via phone, email, and in person. 
  • Fielding questions from the public and private event rentals. 
  • Promoting NHA membership and programs whenever possible. 
  • Managing the Center’s calendar and bulletin boards for volunteer events, educational programs, and meetings.
  • Performing light housekeeping duties to maintain a clean and safe environment in visitor spaces. 
  • Assessing and evaluating existing inventory and remarketing items to sell under the supervision of the Nature Store Manager. 
  • Maintaining a working knowledge of current products, especially as related to wildlife watching and bird feeding. 
  • Maintaining a reputation for NH Audubon as a source of expertise on mission-related topics and store products. 
  • Completing function room set up and take down as well as being the on-site person for event rentals, artists, art receptions, and programs.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Experience: One to three years visitor services, admin, and/or retail services experience required. Must have exceptional verbal and written communication skills, the ability to make independent and coordinated decisions, and work effectively within a diverse community. Must have experience with MS Office products and database programs. Preferred basic understanding of natural history and New Hampshire’s wildlife, especially birds, but this knowledge can be learned on-the-job. 

Skills, Traits and Characteristics Necessary for Success: This position functions within the Operations Department which includes visitor services, event rentals, retail, IT, and maintenance. As such, there is a certain amount of cross training and support necessary to be successful in this role. Must have the ability to prioritize and complete work tasks on time in a complex and dynamic workspace, with a positive attitude, excellent customer service skills, the ability to work independently, and a professional and courteous manner.   Must have the ability to represent the organization in a positive and mission-driven manner in compliance with professional dress standards. 

Physical Demands: To perform the essential functions of the position, the following applies: requires sitting for extended periods of time, as well as standing, stretching, bending, walking, lifting and transporting a minimum of 25 pounds.  Must be able to transport and set up tables, chairs, etc.   

COMPENSATION: Compensation for this hourly, part-time position is $15 – $16 an hour; commensurate with experience. Camp Educator – Seasonal

SUMMARY: Do you have a passion for wildlife and the outdoors? We provide a positive, fun working environment with plenty of opportunities to develop new leadership and teaching skills. Our Camp Educator position will provide you with the tools and training to lead nature camp programming, provide effective child management, and teach in an outdoor setting. New Hampshire Audubon believes in an inquiry-based, student-led approach to our teaching methods, aimed at promoting curiosity of the natural world.  

The Camp Educator position will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon, to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by creating and sustaining a respectful, fun, and safe camp culture. Primary duties include coordinating daily games and activities for campers in environmental education topics, facilitating weekly nature-based all-camp games, and supervision of campers, in grades K-6, during the entirety of the camp day.  

TITLE: Camp Educator

LOCATION: McLane Center (Concord, NH) or Massabesic Center (Auburn, NH)

COMPENSATION:

  • $14.50 – $16/hour payrate (dependent on experience)
  • NH Audubon Annual Membership ($60 value); includes 30% discount at NH Audubon’s Nature Stores
  • Returning candidates will receive a “pay bump” of $0.25/hr. for each year they return in this role up to $1/hr. more than the advertised payrate

Minimum age required: 18* (with reliable transportation). 

*NOTE: First time applicants younger than 18 must have completed two years of NH Audubon’s Leaders-in-Training program in good standing. They will be hired as a “Junior Counselor” and their payrate will reflect that level of responsibility.

HOURS: 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4:30 pm, 30-minute unpaid lunch, seasonal full-time, non-exempt (hourly paid). Hours may vary depending on camp needs. 

SCHEDULE:

  • Camp Staff Training (2 weeks): June 15th – 26th
  • Day Camp Sessions (8 weeks): June 29th – August 21st  
  • Mid-season Training Day: July 31st (no campers)
  • Wrap-up and Debrief (1 week): August 24th – 28th  
  • Expected days off: weekends, Juneteenth (June 19th, 2026), Independence Day (July 3rd, 2026)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Attend all training sessions prior to the camp season. 
  • Oversee and maintain responsibility for camper safety, well-being, and fun. 
  • Develop and implement daily nature exploration activities, crafts, and games for groups of kindergarten, 1st-2nd, 3rd-4th, or 5th-6th grade campers. Use provided lesson plans to teach environmental science topics.
  • Provide first aid to campers as needed.  
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully to campers and parents.  
  • Communicate clearly and effectively to other staff about camper behavior, safety, and other camp activity feedback. 
  • Maintain program supplies in good condition. Perform facility and supply cleaning duties as assigned. 
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings (Fridays) and annual camp evaluation and cleanup at the end of the season (dependent on contract). 
  • Create and sustain a respectful camp culture with a zero tolerance for bullying.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

LEADERSHIP: Reports to the Camp Programs Manager. Camp Director becomes site supervisor when Camp Programs Manager is offsite.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Outdoor camp setting; excellent non-smoking environment. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education: Basic understanding of biology, wildlife, and life sciences required (some college courses preferred). Training regarding effective outdoor education teaching methods and site-specific opportunities for ecological learning will be provided.  

Experience: Eagerness and excitement to share basic facts about biology/ecology in fun, interactive ways is required. Ability to make both independent and collaborative decisions required. Must have American Red Cross or American Heart Association Standard First Aid certification and CPR certification or equivalent desirable. Experience teaching or providing care to children, preferably in a camp setting, and demonstrated ability to implement and lead creative activities preferred.  

Skills, Traits and Characteristics Necessary for Success: Requires exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.  Creativity, flexibility, and enthusiasm, with a sincere interest in the natural environment or education, is necessary. Applicants older than 18 must be able to pass a criminal background check. Applicants younger than 18 require two letters of recommendation from non-relative individuals, which the hiring committee will ask for after interviewing. Must be vaccinated against COVID-19 and can provide COVID vaccination card at orientation. 

Physical Demands: To perform the essential functions of the position, the following applies: excellent physical condition with capability to moderately hike, run and climb, tolerance for variable weather conditions, ability to work in an outdoor setting and able to lift up to 25 lbs.  Camp uniform required (will be provided).

Leaders-in-Training Program Coordinator – Seasonal

The LIT Program Coordinators will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon, to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by assisting with the operation and program coordination of our established environmental day camps. Primary duties include planning and conducting weekly lessons and activities for LIT campers on environmental education and team building, assisting with coordination of daily nature-based activities and weekly all-camp games, and supervising campers during extended care programs.    

TITLE: LIT Program Coordinator

SCHEDULE: June 1st – August 28th, 2026 (up to 13 weeks total: two weeks of onboarding, two weeks of all-staff training, eight weeks of active camp sessions, and one week of wrap-up & debrief duties).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Attend all training sessions prior to the camp season.
  • Assist with planning and leading staff training.
  • Coordinate implementation of the LIT program.
  • Develop, facilitate, and monitor LIT program participants and activities.
  • Supervise afternoon extended care (“after care”).
  • Provide First Aid to campers as needed.
  • Recommend purchases and maintain camp supplies and equipment.
  • Assist instructors with lesson development.
  • Act as a liaison and maintain good relationships with parents of LIT program participants.
  • Lead camper groups during Camp Educator absences.
  • Create and sustain a respectful camp culture with a zero tolerance for bullying.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

LEADERSHIP: Reports to Camp Programs Manager.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Outdoor camp setting; Non-smoking environment. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education: High school diploma required. Bachelor’s degree or current enrollment in elementary education, environmental education, outdoor education, biology, natural history, or related field preferred. 

Experience: Must have experience working in a camp setting and teaching children in grades K-9 with a preference for grades 7th-9th; demonstrated ability to develop creative environmental education activities. Ability to make both independent and collaborative decisions required. Must have American Red Cross or American Heart Association Standard First Aid certification, CPR certification or equivalent, Medication Management for Unlicensed Persons course, or willingness to obtain certifications.

Skills, Traits and Characteristics Necessary for Success: Requires exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Creativity, flexibility, and enthusiasm are necessary. Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a criminal background check. Must be fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19 and can provide COVID vaccination card at orientation. Camp uniform required (provided). 

Physical Demands: To perform the essential functions of the position, the following applies: excellent physical condition with capability to moderately hike, run and climb, tolerance for variable weather conditions, ability to work in an outdoor setting, and able to lift up to 25 lbs. Camp uniform required (will be provided).

Camp Director – Seasonal

SUMMARY: Do you have a passion for wildlife and the outdoors? We provide a positive, fun working environment with plenty of opportunities for growth in leadership and teaching skills. Our Camp Director position will oversee the daily operations of a nature day camp by providing effective child management, training and coordinating staff, and teaching in an outdoor setting. NH Audubon believes in an inquiry-based, student-led approach to our teaching methods which is aimed at promoting curiosity of the natural world.    

The Camp Directors will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon, to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by assisting with the operation and program coordination of our established environmental day camps. Primary duties include managing daily camp operations, supervising camper and staff safety and well-being, and leading all-camp activities and games.  

TITLE: Camp Director

LOCATION: McLane Center (Concord, NH) or Massabesic Center (Auburn, NH) 

COMPENSATION:  

  • $19.50/hour payrate

Minimum Age Required: 21

HOURS: 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4:30 pm, 30-minute unpaid lunch, seasonal full-time, non-exempt (hourly paid). Hours may vary depending on camp needs. 

SCHEDULE: May 26th – August 28th, 2026 (up to 14 weeks total: three weeks of onboarding, two weeks of all-staff training, eight weeks of active camp sessions, and one week of wrap-up and debrief duties).

  • Manage camper check-in/check-out procedures.
  • Recommend purchases and maintain camp supplies and equipment.

  • Develop, facilitate, and monitor camp activities.
    • Act as a liaison and maintain good relationships with campers’ parents.
    • Coordinate all-camp programs and activities (e.g., Morning and Closing Circle, Friday afternoon all-camp games, etc.).
  • Rearrange groups/schedules during Camp Educator absences.
  • Ensure compliance with NH’s DHHS camp rules and safety guidelines.
  • Create and sustain a respectful camp culture with a zero tolerance for bullying.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

LEADERSHIP: Reports to Camp Programs Manager. When Camp Programs Manager is offsite, reports to Center Director (Auburn) or Education Director (Concord) during emergencies.
