SUMMARY:Buds & Blooms: The Magic of Monarch Migration
DESCRIPTION:How can one\, with paper wings\, withstand the challenges of a 3\,000-mile journey? At this time of year\, it’s not just the birds preparing to migrate south! The monarch butterflies here in NH are about to flutter their way down to the forests of northern Mexico. Let’s imagine we are monarch butterflies as we discover some of the challenges a 3\,000-mile adventure presents when you weigh less than a tic-tac\, can’t get wet\, and use the sun as your GPS to get you safely across the continent. NOTE: This program takes place at our Massabesic Center in Auburn.  \nIntended for kids and families\, the Buds & Blooms Series is a compilation of five in-person public programs intended to introduce participants to the magic and wonder of our native plants and pollinators. Occurring monthly through October\, each program highlights a topic pertaining to pollinators and includes an interactive activity as well as a take away. Parental supervision is required and content/material is best suited for children ages 4-12. \nThis program is free of cost\, but RSVP’s are required to reserve your spot. \nPhoto Credit: Pixabay

SUMMARY:Loons on Lake Massabesic
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 8\, 6-7pm \nCost: Free \nFor many\, the haunting call of the loon is an important part of the New Hampshire lake experience. Often seen as a symbol of the northern wilderness\, loons are a beloved fixture on New Hampshire lakes\, and many lake goers enjoy watching them as they raise their young. However\, the breeding season can be a vulnerable time for loons—they face many threats\, both natural and anthropogenic\, while on our lakes. \nThis presentation by Caroline Hughes of the Loon Preservation Committee\, will focus on the biology and life history of loons\, the threats that loons face while on our lakes\, and the work that the Loon Preservation Committee’s staff and volunteers have performed since 1975 to help recover New Hampshire’s threatened loon population. \nWe will end with a discussion of the loons on Massabesic Lake\, the challenges that they have faced\, and the ways that program participants can assist with Massabesic loon monitoring. \nThis program is free of cost\, but participants must register in advance.  The presentation will take place indoors. \nStay up to date with the latest masking requirements by checking community Covid-19 transmission levels here. Our policies remain fluid in accordance with CDC guidelines. \nPhoto Credit: Kittie Wilson

SUMMARY:NH Bat Counts Training
DESCRIPTION:Date: June 14\, 7:00pm-9:00pm\nRegistration link: https://naturegroupie.org/experiences/nh-bat-counts-training \nGot bats? Help us count them! Attics\, barns\, and church steeples often serve as summer homes for female bats and their young. In the face of white-nose syndrome\, which is causing significant declines in bat populations throughout the Northeast\, monitoring these “maternity colonies” is more important than ever. NH Fish and Game and UNH Cooperative Extension are looking for landowners\, homeowners\, and other volunteers to help keep track of New Hampshire’s bats by conducting “emergence counts” at bat roosts throughout the state. \nJoin wildlife biologists Sandi Houghton of NH Fish & Game and Haley Andreozzi of UNH Cooperative Extension for a presentation and demonstration at NH Audubon’s Massabesic Center to learn more about the bat species found in New Hampshire\, the threats leading to population declines\, and how you can help conserve bats. The training will start with an indoor presentation on bats in New Hampshire\, followed by a bat counting demonstration outdoors at dusk. Attendees will be trained to participate in the NH Bat Counts project\, which involves citizen science volunteers in helping to monitor summer bat colonies in New Hampshire. This training is free\, but space is limited and registration is required. Masks are recommended\, but not required inside the Massabesic Audubon Center. This policy is subject to change based on CDC guidelines and county transmission rates. \nSponsoring Organizations: NH Fish & Game\, UNH Cooperative Extension\, NH Audubon \n\nWhat to bring: \nThe second half of the training will be held outside. Be prepared for bugs (especially mosquitoes) – bring bug spray or wear clothing to protect yourself. Bring a flashlight or headlamp to increase visibility walking back to your car.
