SUMMARY:Resurgence of Bald Eagles in New Hampshire with Chris Martin-Canceled
DESCRIPTION:This program examines the dramatic Bald Eagle population recovery in New Hampshire and describes management efforts and partnerships that have helped eagles. Chris Martin has been a raptor biologist for NH Audubon for more than three decades. His work focuses on recovery of the state’s endangered and threatened raptors in close collaboration with NH Fish & Game. He recruits\, trains\, and supervises an enthusiastic corps of NH Audubon volunteer field observers who monitor these species across the state.   \nThis presentation is available in a hybrid format.  You are welcome to join us in-person at the Massabesic Center in Auburn\, or virtually via Zoom! DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a bird-watching walk along the trails at the Massabesic Center in Auburn. Your guide will be Joe Mahoney\, an active bird-watcher for more than 15 years who has traveled all around the country to find and study birds. Joe works in public education and he enjoys teaching and sharing his enthusiasm for birds and nature with people of all ages. All skill levels are welcome. SUMMARY:The State of New Hampshire’s Birds with Dr. Pamela Hunt
DESCRIPTION:In the last 50 years\, scientists estimate that North America has lost roughly 3 billion birds\, meaning that there are only three quarters as many birds around as there used to be. New Hampshire Audubon has been tracking bird populations for almost as long\, and in our “State of the Birds” report we present a summary of how birds are doing here in the Granite State. Almost 300 species occur regularly here\, and this report outlines general population trends\, major threats facing birds and their habitats\, and some of the conservation strategies that might help them recover. The bad news is that birds are declining here as well. SUMMARY:Transit to Trails Day at Massabesic Center
DESCRIPTION:Today is Massabesic Center day on the Transit to Trails program! \nTransit to Trails is a seasonal service that will operate on the first Saturday of each month from June through October of this year. Riders can arrive at the Lake Avenue stop at the SNHU Arena Manchester the day of the event\, board the bus and be transported to outdoor spaces within 30 minutes of the heart of the city. \nThe Nature Conservancy in New Hampshire is partnering with the Manchester Transit Authority and others to host Transit to Trails\, a program providing transportation to walking and hiking trails\, state parks and water destinations to Manchester residents. This year Transit to Trails will be available at no cost to riders! \nGuided bird walks start at 11am and 1pm. \nLearn more here. \n\n\n\n\n\nBuses will depart the Manchester Transit Authority Information Center at the Lake Avenue bus stop at the SNHU Arena at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Buses will pick up from the outdoor locations at 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. and return passengers to Veteran’s Park. \nUPDATE: 🚨🚨🚨 BUS STOP CHANGE 🚨🚨🚨 Due to the “Cruisin’ Downtown” event in Manchester on Saturday\, September 2nd\, the Transit to Trails bus will pick up riders on Lake Avenue at the SNHU Arena. SUMMARY:Professional Development - Back to School Gardening\, Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Join Richard Hodges from ReTreeUs for the last of a two-part workshop to discover a novel way to grow schoolyard gardens. In these workshops\, we’ll talk about sheet mulching techniques\, succession planting\, and building organic matter with an easy-to-do method. You’ll also learn the basic considerations and steps for planning and starting a schoolyard vegetable garden. UNH-Extension Master Gardeners will be on site to talk specifics about pollinator gardens\, as well. \nIn this session\, we will harvest the crops that were planted in the “Back to School Garden” that we established in the spring session. We’ll transplant lettuce\, spinach and kale seedlings for the fall. We will install row cover\, with mini hoops\, to extend the growing season and we’ll discuss various approaches to fall gardens. \nAfter the workshop\, we’ll see these methods and more in action while touring the successful Teaching and Demonstration Garden\, which is maintained through a partnership between NH Audubon and UNH-Extension\, and provides the public with research-based\, sustainable gardening information and skills that benefit our environment for wildlife and for people. \nThis program will take place outdoors rain or shine. SUMMARY:Garden Insects - Environmentally Conscious Pest Management
DESCRIPTION:As a gardener committed to sustainable practices\, it can be difficult knowing which insects are beneficial to your garden and which are harmful\, let alone the best way to help your plants survive the onslaught.  To learn the most environmentally-conscious\, and effective\, ways of gardening with insects\, join us for an introduction to our six-legged friends and foes.  During this in-person workshop\, we’ll discuss the basics of insect taxonomy and anatomy\, the factors behind what makes a bug good or bad\, identification tips\, and a review of common species that you’re likely to encounter here in New Hampshire.  We’ll also discuss integrated pest management concepts\, with a focus on non-chemical practices\, to help lessen the impacts of pests you may encounter at home. \nThis presentation will include a 45-minute indoor lecture\, followed by a 45-minute excursion to the gardens to look for insects and their signs in the Demonstration Gardens. SUMMARY:Growing Corn: As Fresh As It Gets
DESCRIPTION:The arrival of local sweet corn in the summer is an event many look forward to. Why not grow your own for even more freshness and variety? This in-person workshop will explore selecting varieties\, determining where and how to plant and maintain a healthy crop and how to address pests and problems. As a bonus\, we’ll also discuss growing and processing “dry” corn for cornmeal\, flour and popcorn. \nThe workshop will take place primarily indoors\, rain or shine. SUMMARY:Birding Walk at Massabesic Center
DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a birding walk along the trails at Massabesic Center in Auburn. \nThis is an informal birding walk that begins at the Center and explores the trails with local birder\, Joe Mahoney. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nBinocular rental included with ticket. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly flat\, but uneven trails through grassy and wooded terrain. SUMMARY:The People and the Peregrines Behind the Incredible Ongoing Recovery of Falcons in NH with Chris Martin
DESCRIPTION:Decades of restoration efforts now make it possible trace generations of Peregrines from successful nest sites across the state. Sightings of banded falcons reveal their NH lineages as populations increase. The Manchester falcon nest site that we can see in NH Audubon’s nest cam has produced 70 chicks so far and over half of them have been spotted elsewhere as adults. Hear stories of individual falcons and individual people who monitor them. Through photos\, join Chris on a climb to band chicks – how does he get into the ledges and crevasses to measure and document them year after year? \n“It’s the unsolved mysteries that are important to me now\,” says Chris. “I’m getting multiple sightings of a color banded falcon spotted in Hampton who is the grandson of a Manchester bird via the Newburyport\, Plum Island bridge. Where is he now? Did he move on from Hampton? Is he part of a new breeding pair somewhere\, continuing his lineage?” \nChris Martin has been a raptor biologist for NH Audubon for more than three decades. His work focuses on recovery of the state’s endangered and threatened raptors in close collaboration with NH Fish & Game. He recruits\, trains\, and supervises an enthusiastic group of NH Audubon volunteer field observers who monitor these species across the state. \nThis presentation is available in a hybrid format.  Join us in-person at the Massabesic Center in Auburn\, or virtually via Zoom! DESCRIPTION:Join local photography expert\, Tracy Brunner\, at the Massabesic Center on a 6-week journey to learn about photographing nature! Topics covered include how to plan for shots\, ethics of nature photography\, how to make interesting landscapes\, wildlife photography\, macro techniques\, and more. The class will wrap up with a photo share and critique to see what you’ve learned throughout the 6 weeks. Classes will be inside and lecture-based with plenty of time for questions\, and each class will have recommendations for optional photo assignments. After this class you will have all of the tools and knowledge needed to start your nature photography career!
