SUMMARY:Holiday Wreath Building Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Get festive with our team of wreath-building extraordinaires! Learn how to decorate a natural balsam wreath using materials found in your garden. Our volunteer team will guide you through the steps of decorating a balsam frame and will teach you the ins and outs of gathering materials\, including what holds up and what doesn’t\, as well as how to collect material responsibly and sustainably. We’ll teach you how to trim your materials to size and how to affix your materials into a tasteful arrangement. The knowledge you gain in this workshop can be applied to wreaths for any season! \nYou are welcome to bring your own found materials (no oriental bittersweet or other invasive plant material\, please)\, but it is not required. Everything you need to construct a full\, beautiful wreath made of natural materials will be provided\, and you’ll leave the evening with a masterpiece ready to hang on your door for the holidays. If you would like to decorate your wreath with a bow\, please bring your own ribbon. Bow-tying will be discussed on request at the end of the workshop as time allows. Note\, pre-constructed wreath frames measure 24 inches in diameter – perfect size for your front door! \nThis in-person workshop will take place entirely indoors. DESCRIPTION:This program examines the dramatic Bald Eagle population recovery in New Hampshire and describes management efforts and partnerships that have helped eagles. Chris Martin has been a raptor biologist for NH Audubon for more than three decades. His work focuses on recovery of the state’s endangered and threatened raptors in close collaboration with NH Fish & Game. DESCRIPTION:In the last 50 years\, scientists estimate that North America has lost roughly 3 billion birds\, meaning that there are only three quarters as many birds around as there used to be. New Hampshire Audubon has been tracking bird populations for almost as long\, and in our “State of the Birds” report we present a summary of how birds are doing here in the Granite State. Almost 300 species occur regularly here\, and this report outlines general population trends\, major threats facing birds and their habitats\, and some of the conservation strategies that might help them recover. The bad news is that birds are declining here as well. SUMMARY:Transit to Trails Day at Massabesic Center
DESCRIPTION:Today is Massabesic Center day on the Transit to Trails program! \nTransit to Trails is a seasonal service that will operate on the first Saturday of each month from June through October of this year. Riders can arrive at the Lake Avenue stop at the SNHU Arena Manchester the day of the event\, board the bus and be transported to outdoor spaces within 30 minutes of the heart of the city. \nThe Nature Conservancy in New Hampshire is partnering with the Manchester Transit Authority and others to host Transit to Trails\, a program providing transportation to walking and hiking trails\, state parks and water destinations to Manchester residents. This year Transit to Trails will be available at no cost to riders! \nGuided bird walks start at 11am and 1pm. \nLearn more here. \n\n\n\n\n\nBuses will depart the Manchester Transit Authority Information Center at the Lake Avenue bus stop at the SNHU Arena at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Buses will pick up from the outdoor locations at 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. and return passengers to Veteran’s Park. \nUPDATE: 🚨🚨🚨 BUS STOP CHANGE 🚨🚨🚨 Due to the “Cruisin’ Downtown” event in Manchester on Saturday\, September 2nd\, the Transit to Trails bus will pick up riders on Lake Avenue at the SNHU Arena. DESCRIPTION:Join Richard Hodges from ReTreeUs for the last of a two-part workshop to discover a novel way to grow schoolyard gardens. In these workshops\, we’ll talk about sheet mulching techniques\, succession planting\, and building organic matter with an easy-to-do method. You’ll also learn the basic considerations and steps for planning and starting a schoolyard vegetable garden. UNH-Extension Master Gardeners will be on site to talk specifics about pollinator gardens\, as well. \nIn this session\, we will harvest the crops that were planted in the “Back to School Garden” that we established in the spring session. We’ll transplant lettuce\, spinach and kale seedlings for the fall. We will install row cover\, with mini hoops\, to extend the growing season and we’ll discuss various approaches to fall gardens. \nAfter the workshop\, we’ll see these methods and more in action while touring the successful Teaching and Demonstration Garden\, which is maintained through a partnership between NH Audubon and UNH-Extension\, and provides the public with research-based\, sustainable gardening information and skills that benefit our environment for wildlife and for people. \nThis program will take place outdoors rain or shine. DESCRIPTION:UNH Extension Master Gardeners will be working in the soil to maintain our luscious gardens which include pollinator and bird-friendly plants\, a rain garden space\, vegetable gardens\, raised beds\, and more. Ask all of your pressing questions about your plants at home\, or find out how to get involved in gardening with NH Audubon and UNH Extension. \nAs an on-going partnership between New Hampshire Audubon and University of New Hampshire Extension’s Master Gardener Program\, the Demonstration Gardens provide a place for sharing best practices in eco-friendly home and community gardening\, which enhance human health and well-being and wildlife habitat.  \nDress for walking in the grass on flat but uneven terrain. Protect yourself against insects and the sun with long pants\, sleeves\, sunscreen\, and insect repellant. Gardeners will not be on site during inclement weather. \nBuilding hours are 11am to 5pm on Thursdays\, so plan accordingly. Visit the bathrooms\, gift shop\, and meet our animal ambassadors after you explore the gardens. SUMMARY:Garden Insects - Environmentally Conscious Pest Management
DESCRIPTION:As a gardener committed to sustainable practices\, it can be difficult knowing which insects are beneficial to your garden and which are harmful\, let alone the best way to help your plants survive the onslaught.  To learn the most environmentally-conscious\, and effective\, ways of gardening with insects\, join us for an introduction to our six-legged friends and foes.  During this in-person workshop\, we’ll discuss the basics of insect taxonomy and anatomy\, the factors behind what makes a bug good or bad\, identification tips\, and a review of common species that you’re likely to encounter here in New Hampshire.  We’ll also discuss integrated pest management concepts\, with a focus on non-chemical practices\, to help lessen the impacts of pests you may encounter at home. \nThis presentation will include a 45-minute indoor lecture\, followed by a 45-minute excursion to the gardens to look for insects and their signs in the Demonstration Gardens.
