SUMMARY:A Season in the Sun Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:A Season in the Sun: Photographs from the Massabesic Center’s Demonstration Garden by Walt Swist \nWalt Swist photos from the NH Audubon Massabesic Center’s Demonstration Gardens.\nTake a photographic journey with Walt Swist through the 2024 season in the NH Audubon Massabesic Center’s Demonstration Gardens! Experience the magical pollinator gardens in full bloom and the amazing bounty of the vegetable and herb gardens\, with side tours of the wedding garden\, the barn garden\, the bird-friendly gardens\, the memorial garden\, the rain garden\, the wildflower garden\, the garden for the senses\, and more. These gardens present opportunities for home and community gardeners to observe and learn best practices in a beautiful natural setting. \nAs an additional benefit\, we donate most of our fresh vegetables and herbs to the Families in Transition Food Pantry and Dining Services in Manchester. We also provide vegetables for our favorite Animal Ambassadors who reside at the Massabesic Center. In 2024 we harvested about 543 pounds of vegetables and herbs. \nSome of these photos are simple direct views of the harvest in the field\, with vegetables and herbs dutifully lining up to be weighed and counted. In other photos the vegetables\, herbs and flowers take center stage to tell their own unique stories\, often revealing whimsical individual personalities and sharing the secret joys of life of the garden. \nThis exhibit is a departure from our typical showroom gallery\, and will be displayed in our main hall\, which will be fully accessible during standard Massabesic Center hours Wednesdays to Saturdays from 11am to 5pm. Meet the artist during our Art Walk in the Garden event on July 12th. Walt will be talking about his work with guests in the main hall exhibit area between 10:30am and 12:30pm. \nBio: Walt is a volunteer with the UNH Extension Master Gardener program and a resident of Manchester\, New Hampshire. He is also a NH Audubon volunteer in the demonstration gardens at the Massabesic Center in Auburn\, where he helps grow and harvest produce in the vegetable and herb gardens. He enjoys photographing the diversity and beauty of the natural world enhanced with an occasional dash of whimsical storytelling.

SUMMARY:Creative Nature Ventures Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit highlights the nature-inspired work of a group of local artists\, led by Bill Turner\, that meets once a week at Creative Ventures\, located in Milford\, NH. During these sessions\, typically 8-10 artists bring their work (either an in-progress or a completed work). Each piece is displayed before the group and generates a friendly discussion centered on suggestions that help lead to a more exciting work of art. The main focus of the work is realism\, however\, abstract artists also benefit from the feedback process. Recently\, there has been a nature focus within the group\, including many paintings of bird species\, in particular. Collaborating with NH Audubon to display these pieces is a natural connection. We look forward to generating interest and excitement for our works with other art-\, bird-\, and nature- enthusiasts. \n \nThe exhibit will be on display in the Massabesic Center’s large function room during regular operating hours. Viewing access may be restricted during private event rentals and education programs. Calling ahead to confirm is recommended.

SUMMARY:Gifts of the Garden: Engaging with the Experts
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Massabesic Center to meet the team who are outstanding in their fields and know all the dirt. No need to herb your enthusiasm! Bring your pressing questions about plants\, find your inner peas\, discover inspiration for laying down roots at home\, or just dig the blooms! \nOur volunteer team of UNH Extension Master Gardeners like to have fun and teach others about what it takes to create and maintain the luscious\, wildlife-friendly gardens on the grounds. These informal meet and greet events are the perfect way to learn about getting involved in volunteer gardening opportunities with NH Audubon\, and about ways you can duplicate our gardens in your own backyard\, whether you have an acre or a patio pot. \nThe beautiful gardens on site include pollinator and bird-friendly plants\, a rain garden space\, vegetable gardens\, raised beds\, and more. As an ongoing partnership between New Hampshire Audubon and University of New Hampshire Extension’s Master Gardener Program\, Massabesic’s Demonstration Gardens provide a place for sharing best practices in eco-friendly home and community gardening\, which enhance human health and well-being and wildlife habitat. \nDress for walking in short grass on flat but uneven terrain. Sunscreen and personal insect repellant are recommended. Building hours (and bathroom access) are 11am to 5pm\, but come early before the heat of the day chases the gardeners away. Visit the gift shop and meet our animal ambassadors after you spend your morning exploring the gardens. Consider packing a lunch to enjoy at one of the picnic tables surrounding the gardens. Children are welcomed and encouraged! \nGardeners will not be on site during inclement weather\, but visitors are still welcomed. \nThis event is free to attend. RSVP is recommended to let us know how many visitors to expect \nSupport our programs and join or renew your membership today! Not sure of your membership status? Email our member services department or call (603) 224-9909 x310. \nFor mobility\, sensory\, behavioral\, or other accessibility accommodations\, please contact Massabesic Center Director\, Kimmie Whiteman.

SUMMARY:NH Bat Counts Training
DESCRIPTION:Got bats? Help us count them! Attics\, barns\, and church steeples often serve as summer homes for female bats and their young. In the face of white-nose syndrome\, which is causing significant declines in bat populations throughout the Northeast\, monitoring these “maternity colonies” is more important than ever. Landowners\, homeowners\, and other volunteers can help keep track of New Hampshire’s bats by conducting “emergence counts” at bat roosts throughout the state. \nJoin wildlife biologists Sandi Houghton of NH Fish & Game and Haley Andreozzi of UNH Cooperative Extension for a presentation and demonstration at the NH Audubon Massabesic Center to learn more about the bat species found in New Hampshire\, the threats leading to population declines\, and how you can help. The training will start with an indoor presentation on bats in New Hampshire. Then\, we’ll head outdoors to the onsite barn for a bat counting demonstration at dusk. \nAttendees will be trained to participate in the NH Bat Counts project\, in which volunteers help to monitor summer bat colonies in New Hampshire. All are welcome\, but landowners and homeowners with bats on their property are especially encouraged to attend. For those interested in participating in NH Bat Counts but without bats on their own property\, we will have suggestions for sites – like the Massabesic Center – in need of committed volunteers. \nThis training is free\, but space is limited and registration is required. Register here through UNH Extension. \nWhat to Bring: The second half of the training will be held outside at twilight. Bring a clipboard and pencil to collect data. Be prepared for bugs (especially mosquitoes)\, and bring a flashlight or headlamp for visibility when walking back to your car. \nQuestions? Contact Haley Andreozzi at haley.andreozzi@unh.edu or 603-862-5327.
