SUMMARY:Monitoring Mammals Across the Granite State
DESCRIPTION:New Hampshire hosts a diverse suite of mammal species\, from mesocarnivores like bobcats to large ungulates like moose. These animals are highly valued by many stakeholders and play critical ecological roles throughout the state. Effective monitoring programs are crucial to the conservation and management of these species\, but their highly mobile and often cryptic nature makes them difficult to monitor. This presentation by Remington Moll\, Assistant Professor at the University of New Hampshire\, will describe a new research project between UNH and the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department that is evaluating the effectiveness of a state-wide mammal monitoring program using trail cameras and drones. \n  \nThe Seacoast Chapter meets monthly on the second Wednesday except the months of July and August unless there is a special program. SUMMARY:Saving a Species from Extinction\, Protecting the North Atlantic Right Whale
DESCRIPTION:Join the New Hampshire Audubon Seacoast Chapter for their in person November program. \nWith fewer than 350 whales remaining\, the North Atlantic right whale is one of the rarest large whale species in the world. Once a heavily targeted commercial whaling species\, right whales remain vulnerable to contemporary human activities\, including vessel strikes and entanglement in fishing gear. Their recovery is also threatened by low reproduction\, habitat loss\, disease and environmental contaminants. For more than 40 years\, the New England Aquarium has been in the forefront of right whale research and conservation efforts and our work has been integral to informing national and international efforts to protect these elusive giants. SUMMARY:Late-season Migration at Pack Monadnock
DESCRIPTION:Join Phil Brown\, the Harris Center’s Bird Conservation Director\, for a half day of hawk watching at the Pack Monadnock Raptor Observatory in Peterborough. We will hope for late season migration which\, in mid-October\, can include Golden Eagles and Northern Goshawks\, large flocks of migrant Canada Geese\, songbirds\, and even scoters! \nLearn hawk watching ID tips from the experts and learn about the different migration strategies and behaviors of up to 15 migratory raptor species. During a visit to the hawk watch\, you’ll experience NH’s birding culture and immerse yourself in a long-standing community science project that is a partnership between the Harris Center and NH Audubon. Meet at the Observatory for the 10 am start time\, and stay as long as you’d like. The Park usually closes by 4 pm in late October. Weather conditions may cancel. \nState park reservations with Miller State Park and a small fee are required for visiting Pack Monadnock. SUMMARY:Seacoast Chapter Fall Pelagic Birding Trip
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, October 10 Dockside 7:30 am for an 8 am departure from Rye Harbor\, NH—MV Granite State  \nIn past years the October pelagic out of Rye harbor has ventured into MA\, NH\, and ME waters and has turned up interesting birds including four species of Shearwater (Great\, Manx\, Cory’s\, and Sooty)\, 2 species of Phalarope (Red-necked and Red)\, Pomarine Jaeger\, Northern Fulmar\, Leach’s Storm- petrel and other species such as Atlantic Puffin\, Razorbill\, and Dovekie.  (But obviously as with any trip no bird species is guaranteed or should to be expected!). Veteran birder Steve Mirick will lead the all-day trip. The cost is $75 per person to cover fuel\, boat time\, and the cost of chum. \nRegistration is limited to 50 and participants should be fully vaccinated. One of the top 10 birding spots in New Hampshire\, this walk will traverse Rochester city park trails along the Cocheco River and around the former wastewater treatment settling ponds.
