SUMMARY:Blossoming Beyond: Celebrating Queerness in Nature
DESCRIPTION:NH Audubon is thrilled to be partnering with Queerlective to provide a space to showcase their “Blossoming Beyond: Celebrating Queerness in Nature” exhibit. Blossoming Beyond explores the connection between queerness and nature\, showcasing pieces of work that represent the resilience\, strength\, and beauty of both the natural world and the LGBTQ+ community. The exhibition celebrates diversity and the intrinsic bond between individuals and the environment. Queerlective works to help create a more inclusive world for the Queer\, BIPOC\, and other marginalized communities through art\, impacting the LGBTQ community in New Hampshire and beyond. This partnership highlights NH Audubon’s commitment to protecting nature for all people\, promoting diversity and inclusivity\, and expanding opportunities to enjoy nature together. NH Audubon will be donating half of our typical commission to uplift Queerlective’s mission and to help foster the innate connection between nature and queerness.

SUMMARY:Monarch Migration: How Radio-tagging Informs Conservation with Diane De Luca
DESCRIPTION:The last generation of monarchs travel south to overwinter in central Mexico. A journey close to 3000 miles. The placement of tiny Nanotags on migrating monarch butterflies is part of the larger Motus Project\, a global migration tracking system that NH Audubon and many partners are expanding in the Northeast. Tracking information helps determine phenology\, travel speeds\, and migration routes of the tagged monarchs. During this online presentation\, we will share what we have learned in the last two years of tagging monarchs and how this helps inform conservation.  \nThis presentation will take place virtually via Zoom.  \nPresenter:\nDiane De Luca\, NH Audubon Senior Biologist  \nCost:\n$12 for NH Audubon members\n$15 for non-members (Join or renew your membership today! SUMMARY:Tracking the Signs of the Season: Exploring Phenology with Diane De Luca
DESCRIPTION:What do budding wildflowers\, metamorphosing frogs\, and migrating hawks have in common? They are all undergoing life cycle phases that can be affected by climate change. Have you ever made notes about the first peeper you heard calling\, the arrival of your first warbler\, or your first sighting of a mourning cloak butterfly? Then you have been monitoring phenology! Documenting stories in our own backyards contributes to the impacts of climate change. This online presentation will share a nationwide effort to monitor these life cycle events\, the phenology project at NH Audubon\, and opportunities for you to get involved.  \nThis presentation will take place virtually via Zoom. \nPresenter:\nDiane De Luca\, Senior Biologist \nCost:\n$12 for NH Audubon members\n$15 for non-members (Join or renew your membership today! SUMMARY:Jeffreys Ledge Pelagic Birding Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon aboard MV Granite State as we explore Jeffreys Ledge\, 20 miles off the New Hampshire coast. This is an all-day expedition (between 8-10 hours at sea)\, departing from Rye Harbor\, to look for pelagic (ocean-going) seabirds on Jeffreys Ledge\, although we’ll also keep an eye out for whales and other marine life. Jeffreys Ledge is an undersea ridge running northeast from near Rockport\, Massachusetts to near Cape Elizabeth\, Maine.  Its steep sides produce upwellings of nutrient-rich waters that produce a lot of food for seabirds and marine life.    \nWhat we will see:\nFrom the upper deck\, a person with good binoculars can scan a circle of ocean a couple of miles across\, with a good chance of seeing groups of birds quite some distance away. On past fall trips\, we have seen four different species of Shearwater (Great\, Sooty\, Cory’s\, and Manx)\, Northern Gannets\, Red-necked Phalaropes in fall plumage\, Wilson’s Storm-petrel\, jaegers\, an array of near-shore species\, and random migrants. We’ve also seen several different species of whales and dolphins\, including Fin\, Minke\, Right\, and Humpback Whales\, Harbor Porpoises\, Atlantic White-Sided Dolphins\, and once a rare Sperm Whale on the outer edge of Jeffreys Ledge.     \nPresenter:\nRenowned birders and NH Audubon volunteers Steve and Jane Mirick will be our group leaders\, with Captain Pete Reynolds driving the boat. NH Audubon volunteer and avid birder Jon Woolf will coordinate logistics.   \nJoin Jon Woolf for the introductory webinar\, Introduction to Pelagic Wildlife\, on Friday\, October 6th\, 8pm-9pm (free for all attendees).  \nFor mobility\, sensory\, behavioral\, or other accessibility accommodations\, please contact Massabesic Center Director Kimmie Whiteman. \nCost:\n$80 for NH Audubon members\n$100 for non-members (Join or renew your membership today! Not sure of your membership status? Email our member services department or call (603) 224-9909 x310.)  \nRegistration Required.\nNH Audubon’s ticket system utilizes PayPal to process payments. Users are not required to use PayPal to check out; a guest option is provided. PayPal is a trusted way to pay online. \nPlease note we have set a maximum of 50 people\, to allow for comfortable spacing and an enjoyable bird-watching experience.  These trips sell out quickly\, and we do not run a waiting list.   \nThis trip is weather-dependent. Final decisions on whether we can comfortably set sail will be made the day before.  There are no rain dates. First priority for registration will be granted to participants from the previous tour’s weather cancellation\, if applicable.  \nConfirmation letters\, including the webinar Zoom link and information about what to bring and what to wear\, will be sent to all participants after we sell out (typically in early September).  \nThis fall\, NH Audubon’s Seacoast Chapter will be running a second trip on 9/5/2023.  \nPhoto: Corys Shearwater\, Steve Mirick
