SUMMARY:What's the Scoop on Saw-Whets? - Newfound Nature Series - August 5
DESCRIPTION:August 5\, 2025. \nWhat’s the Scoop on Saw-Whets? \nLindsay Herlihy (NH Audubon/Black Mountain Banding Station) \nNorthern Saw-whet Owls are the smallest nocturnal raptor in New England. These fierce\, tiny predators have a secretive nature that makes them challenging to study. Saw-whets are also one of the few owl species in North America which undertake an annual migration in fall and spring. So\, how do biologists study owls and what do we know about Saw-whets in New Hampshire? Join biologist Lindsay Herlihy to learn more about the natural history of Northern Saw-whet Owls and discover how researchers are investigating the migratory behavior of this incredible species. \nHeld on Tuesdays\, 7:00–8:15 pm\nJoin us for our Newfound Nature Series (the new name for our beloved Red Barn Speaker Series) on Tuesday evenings. The series is now held at Grey Rocks and co-hosted by the Newfound Lake Region Association (NLRA). SUMMARY:Dragons & Damsels of New Hampshire - Newfound Nature Series - July 22
DESCRIPTION:July 22\, 2025 \nDragons & Damsels of New Hampshire \nDr. Pam Hunt (NH Audubon) \nWelcome to the fascinating world of the insect order Odonata! You may be familiar with the dragonflies buzzing over your yard in the summer\, or the damselflies that land on your kayak\, but what do you REALLY know about these ancient insects? This program provides an overview of the biology and ecology of dragonflies and damselflies\, from their amazing life cycle (content alert: some pretty crazy reproductive behavior is involved!) to their incredible diversity. It also highlights a few of NH’s notable species and their stories\, and closes with some results from the “NH Dragonfly Survey\,” a five-year volunteer-based project that documented the distribution of these insects across the state. SUMMARY:Banding Together for the Birds - Newfound Nature Series - July 15
DESCRIPTION:July 15\, 2025\nBanding Together for the Birds: The Science of Bird Banding and its Role in Avian Conservation\nLindsay Herlihy (Black Mountain Banding Station) \nBird banding is one of the most widely used strategies for scientists to study populations of wild birds. But what exactly is bird banding\, and how does it work? Biologist Lindsay Herlihy will explain the practice\, history\, and applications of bird banding\, and share stories (with lots of photos!) of various local research efforts which rely on banding to study and conserve New England birds. \n\n\n\n\nHeld on Tuesdays\, 7:00–8:15 pm\nJoin us for our Newfound Nature Series (the new name for our beloved Red Barn Speaker Series) on Tuesday evenings. The series is now held at Grey Rocks and co-hosted by the Newfound Lake Region Association (NLRA). Registration is not necessary – just come and join us for an evening’s entertainment! \nThank you to our season sponsors: John S. Jordan Design\, and the Hebron Conservation Commission.
