DESCRIPTION:Earlier this year\, we talked about trees that drop their leaves in the autumn. However\, some trees keep their leaves throughout the year\, and will stay green — even in wintertime! Join New Hampshire Audubon at the John Brockway Nature Preserve in Hopkinton to explore nature with your 3-5 year old as we look at the evergreen wonder of coniferous trees. \nPrograms will begin at 10 a.m. and last about 45 minutes each. \nThis is an outdoor location with no bathroom facilities. SUMMARY:Jeffrey's Ledge Pelagic Birding Trip
DESCRIPTION:*Trip date rescheduled to Monday\, October 13 (original date October 12)* \nJoin NH Audubon aboard MV Granite State as we explore Jeffreys Ledge\, 20 miles off the New Hampshire coast. This is an all-day expedition (between 8-10 hours at sea)\, departing from Rye Harbor\, to look for pelagic (ocean-going) seabirds on Jeffreys Ledge\, although we’ll also keep an eye out for whales and other marine life. Jeffreys Ledge is an undersea ridge running northeast from near Rockport\, Massachusetts to near Cape Elizabeth\, Maine. Its steep sides produce upwellings of nutrient-rich waters that produce a lot of food for seabirds and marine life. \nWhat we will see: From the upper deck\, a person with good binoculars can scan a circle of ocean a couple of miles across\, with a good chance of seeing groups of birds quite some distance away. On past fall trips\, we have seen four different species of Shearwater (Great\, Sooty\, Cory’s\, and Manx)\, Northern Gannets\, Red-necked Phalaropes in fall plumage\, Wilson’s Storm-petrel\, jaegers\, an array of near-shore species\, and random migrants. We’ve also seen several different species of whales and dolphins\, including Fin\, Minke\, Right\, and Humpback Whales\, Harbor Porpoises\, Atlantic White-Sided Dolphins\, and once a rare Sperm Whale on the outer edge of Jeffreys Ledge. \nPresenter: Renowned birders and NH Audubon volunteers Steve and Jane Mirick will be our group leaders\, with Captain Pete Reynolds driving the boat. SUMMARY:Birding Outing at Paradise Point
DESCRIPTION:Have one last summer hurrah at Paradise Point Nature Center with a birding walk! This walk will go through the trails of Paradise Point Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary consists mostly of Eastern Hemlock forest in addition to a red maple swamp and beautiful views of Newfound Lake. Birds seen on this walk previously include Red-eyed Vireo\, Barred Owl\, and Common Loon. After the walk\, the center will be open to explore! \nThis is an informal birding outing that begins at the center parking lot and explores the trails with Newfound Center Coordinator Devin Guilfoyle. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nThis is a free event. Binocular rental is provided. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over varied trails with some elevation change through wooded terrain. Trails may be soggy or muddy. DESCRIPTION:Open new realms each week as our Lead Naturalist helps participants focus their senses on different fascinating elements of their surroundings such as birds\, trees\, ferns\, wildflowers\, and more. In this guided hike\, learn how to deduce the ecological role of an organism from its form (i.e. Common Loons are a fish predator from bill shape). Please meet at the Paradise Point Nature Center. Limited pairs of binoculars are available for use.
