DESCRIPTION:Devin Guilfoyle\, Paradise Point Nature Center Coordinator\, is leading a guided hike of Paradise Point Nature Center in Hebron\, NH. We will meet at the head of the center’s driveway off of the parking lot. \nThis will be about a 90 minute hike navigating the trails of the center\, exploring topics such as birds\, trees\, and land history. Paradise Point Wildlife Sanctuary is home to many natural wonders including a red maple swamp\, glacial erratics\, and picturesque views of Newfound Lake. \nThis is a free event. Binoculars are available for rental in limited quantity. Please dress for the weather with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk 2-3 miles over moderately hilly terrain in a wooded setting. Trails may be muddy in places if rain has fallen recently. Dogs are not allowed on this walk.

SUMMARY:Birding Outing at the McLane Center
DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a birding outing along the trails at the McLane Center in Concord\, NH. We will meet in the parking lot in front of the main building. \nThis is an informal birding outing that begins at the McLane parking lot and explores the trails with local birder and NH Audubon volunteer (and former wildlife biologist)\, Mark Suomala. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nMcLane provides various types of bird habitats\, including forest\, grassland\, and edge habitats. We can expect to see birds such as mourning doves\, eastern phoebes\, and gray catbirds\, as well as several woodpecker species and the potential of raptors such as red-tailed hawks. \nThis is a free event. Binocular rental is provided. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly flat\, but uneven trails through grassy and wooded terrain. Trails may be soggy or muddy in the rainy season. Dogs are not allowed on this walk.

DESCRIPTION:2024 Red Barn Series\, Newfound Audubon\nNo registration necessary – just come and join us! \nSpeaker: Bob Fleck\, Author/Photographer \n“In all things of Nature\, there is something of the marvelous.” ~ Aristotle \nThe selection of photographic images to be presented in this lecture portray the artist’s interpretation of Aristotle’s ancient words. Curated from photographs taken by Bob Fleck over the past decade\, the overarching theme of the lecture is “finding the marvelous” available to us to witness in the natural world and bringing it into focus via photography and patience (plus a little luck!). We need not travel beyond New Hampshire and New England to be in awe. \nAs we ponder the images presented\, we will search for the details\, the “marvelous”\, the overall beauty that abounds in nature. Many instances presented by the photographer were but a moment in time\, yet a memory forever. The presentation represents such a small fraction of what is discoverable\, if we only take the time to look and see (and sometimes lucky enough to capture) “something of the marvelous”. Bob will also discuss some of his equipment and how some of the images were captured. Questions are encouraged throughout the session. \nMany of the images from his book\, “Seasons At A New England Bog – A Photographic Essay”\, as well as many other examples of the “marvels” of nature will be shared during the lecture/discussion. \nA musical montage of pages from the book will start shortly prior to the main presentation as people are arriving. And yet what do we REALLY know about these critters? Some of the things insects do are stranger than fiction\, but rest assured that they are doing it all the time right under our noses. For example\, did you know that male dragonflies can scoop sperm from a previous male out of females’ reproductive organs? Or that some wasps lay eggs inside living caterpillars\, and the wasp larvae eat the caterpillar alive from the inside out? And then there are the more familiar stories involving metamorphosis\, pollination\, and mimicry. SUMMARY:Climate Café for Parents: Reflecting on Raising Children in a Warming Climate
DESCRIPTION:NH Audubon and the Climate and Health Initiative for Caregivers and Kids (CHICKs) are partnering to host a climate café for parents on April 28th at 10am at the McLane Center in Concord. Climate cafés are facilitated\, small-group gatherings where participants are provided with a safe space to share their thoughts and emotions around the threat posed by global warming. This event will uniquely focus on the mental health of parents\, who are presented with the burden of raising their children in the shadow of an uncertain and dangerous climate. The café is an opportunity to meet and connect with other local parents who are concerned about the impact of climate change. \nThe event will be co-facilitated by Maria Finnegan and Michelle Wagner. Ms. Finnegan is the Director of CHICKs with NH Healthcare Workers for Climate Action\, where she leads the organization’s work around the physical and mental health impacts of climate change on children and caregivers. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nBinocular rental included with ticket. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly flat\, but uneven trails through grassy terrain. Trails may be soggy or muddy in the rainy season.

DESCRIPTION:Join New Hampshire Audubon at Brockway Nature Preserve in Hopkinton for nature exploration with your 3-5 year old. Programs will be held on the first and third Wednesday of every month through May. Each program has an exciting theme regarding wildlife\, nature\, or the seasons. Programs will begin at 10 am and last about 45 minutes each. \nThis is an outdoor location with no bathroom facilities. Please dress children for the weather and be ready to walk on the trail\, sit on logs and the ground\, and dig in the dirt! Programs will be cancelled if poor weather is predicted during the program time; participants will be notified by email of cancellations. To find the meeting circle\, park at the Brockway Nature Preserve parking area along Farrington Corners Road in Hopkinton\, then follow the entrance trail across the bridge to the circle.
