DESCRIPTION:Join us for a birding outing at Horseshoe Pond! This birding hotspot is a prime example of an oxbow lake\, and is particularly notable for its waterfowl sightings. Species seen at this spot in the past in late March include Canada Geese\, Ring-necked Ducks\, and Hooded Mergansers. \nThis is an informal birding outing led by former NH Audubon biologist Mark Suomala. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. We will meet at the parking lot on the corner of Commercial St. and Delta Drive. A NH Audubon educator will email more details before the event. DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a birding outing along the trails at the Massabesic Center in Auburn\, NH! This is an informal birding outing that begins at Massabesic Center trailhead and explores the trails with local birder and Massabesic Center Advisory Committee member\, Joe Mahoney. We will meet at the front doors of the main building. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nThe Massabesic Wildlife Refuge is home to many species who prefer open space and forest edges. You may see species such as Hairy Woodpeckers\, Blue Jays\, and Dark-eyed Juncos in the fields and on the lake. \nThis is a free event. Binocular rental is provided. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly flat\, but uneven trails through grassy and wooded terrain. Trails may be soggy\, icy\, or muddy. DESCRIPTION:Earlier this year\, we talked about trees that drop their leaves in the autumn. However\, some trees keep their leaves throughout the year\, and will stay green — even in wintertime! Join New Hampshire Audubon at the John Brockway Nature Preserve in Hopkinton to explore nature with your 3-5 year old as we look at the evergreen wonder of coniferous trees. \nPrograms will begin at 10 a.m. and last about 45 minutes each. \nThis is an outdoor location with no bathroom facilities. SUMMARY:Jeffrey's Ledge Pelagic Birding Trip
DESCRIPTION:*Trip date rescheduled to Monday\, October 13 (original date October 12)* \nJoin NH Audubon aboard MV Granite State as we explore Jeffreys Ledge\, 20 miles off the New Hampshire coast. This is an all-day expedition (between 8-10 hours at sea)\, departing from Rye Harbor\, to look for pelagic (ocean-going) seabirds on Jeffreys Ledge\, although we’ll also keep an eye out for whales and other marine life. Jeffreys Ledge is an undersea ridge running northeast from near Rockport\, Massachusetts to near Cape Elizabeth\, Maine. Its steep sides produce upwellings of nutrient-rich waters that produce a lot of food for seabirds and marine life. \nWhat we will see: From the upper deck\, a person with good binoculars can scan a circle of ocean a couple of miles across\, with a good chance of seeing groups of birds quite some distance away. On past fall trips\, we have seen four different species of Shearwater (Great\, Sooty\, Cory’s\, and Manx)\, Northern Gannets\, Red-necked Phalaropes in fall plumage\, Wilson’s Storm-petrel\, jaegers\, an array of near-shore species\, and random migrants. We’ve also seen several different species of whales and dolphins\, including Fin\, Minke\, Right\, and Humpback Whales\, Harbor Porpoises\, Atlantic White-Sided Dolphins\, and once a rare Sperm Whale on the outer edge of Jeffreys Ledge. \nPresenter: Renowned birders and NH Audubon volunteers Steve and Jane Mirick will be our group leaders\, with Captain Pete Reynolds driving the boat. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly flat\, but uneven trails through wooded terrain. Trails may be soggy or muddy. DESCRIPTION:What’s happening to the green leaves? For this program\, we will be looking at what happens to the leaves on the trees as autumn begins in New England. \nPrograms will begin at 10 a.m. and last about 45 minutes each. \nThis is an outdoor location with no bathroom facilities. Please dress children for the weather and be ready to walk on the trail\, sit on logs and the ground\, and dig in the dirt! Please also review NH Audubon’s Outdoor Education Program Liability Release & Agreement Waiver before registering. \nPrograms will be cancelled if poor weather is predicted during the program time; participants will be notified by phone of cancellations. \nTo find the meeting circle\, park at the Brockway Nature Preserve parking area along Farrington Corners Road in Hopkinton\, then follow the entrance trail across the bridge to the circle.
