DESCRIPTION:UNH Extension Master Gardeners will be waiting for you to visit the Massabesic Center on select mornings this growing season! Bring all of your pressing questions about plants\, discover inspiration for adapting spaces at home\, or just enjoy the blooms! These events are also the perfect time to learn about getting involved in volunteer gardening opportunities at the Massabesic Center. \nThe luscious gardens on site include pollinator and bird-friendly plants\, a rain garden space\, vegetable gardens\, raised beds\, and more. As an ongoing partnership between New Hampshire Audubon and University of New Hampshire Extension’s Master Gardener Program\, Massabesic’s Demonstration Gardens provide a place for sharing best practices in eco-friendly home and community gardening\, which enhance human health and well-being and wildlife habitat. \nDress for walking in short grass on flat but uneven terrain. Sunscreen and personal insect repellant are recommended. Building hours (and bathroom access) are 11am to 5pm\, so plan accordingly. Visit the gift shop and meet our animal ambassadors after you spend your morning exploring the gardens. Consider packing a lunch to enjoy at one of the picnic tables surrounding the gardens. Children are welcomed and encouraged! \nGardeners will not be on site during inclement weather\, but visitors are still welcomed. \nThis event is free to attend. DESCRIPTION:The Manchester Artists Association and the Massabesic Audubon Center present “Harvest of Arts”\, an exhibit to celebrate art and nature’s beauty. Fifteen artists have gathered a cornucopia of original paintings and photographs that capture the iconic images and colors of autumn in New England. \nThe exhibit will run from August 31st to November 1st. SUMMARY:Fall Pelagic Birding Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon aboard MV Granite State as we explore Jeffreys Ledge\, 20 miles off the New Hampshire coast. This is an all-day expedition (between 8-10 hours at sea)\, departing from Rye Harbor\, to look for pelagic (ocean-going) seabirds on Jeffreys Ledge\, although we’ll also keep an eye out for whales and other marine life. Jeffreys Ledge is an undersea ridge running northeast from near Rockport\, Massachusetts to near Cape Elizabeth\, Maine. Its steep sides produce upwellings of nutrient-rich waters that produce a lot of food for seabirds and marine life. \nWhat we will see:\nFrom the upper deck\, a person with good binoculars can scan a circle of ocean a couple of miles across\, with a good chance of seeing groups of birds quite some distance away. On past fall trips\, we have seen four different species of Shearwater (Great\, Sooty\, Cory’s\, and Manx)\, Northern Gannets\, Red-necked Phalaropes in fall plumage\, Wilson’s Storm-petrel\, jaegers\, an array of near-shore species\, and random migrants. We’ve also seen several different species of whales and dolphins\, including Fin\, Minke\, Right\, and Humpback Whales\, Harbor Porpoises\, Atlantic White-Sided Dolphins\, and once a rare Sperm Whale on the outer edge of Jeffreys Ledge. \nPresenter:\nRenowned birders and NH Audubon volunteers Steve and Jane Mirick will be our group leaders\, with Captain Pete Reynolds driving the boat. SUMMARY:Isles of Shoals Birding Trip
DESCRIPTION:Experience the magic of the Isles of Shoals in early fall. Spending nights on Appledore Island will give us the opportunity to explore the diversity of the islands. Over 200 species of songbirds\, seabirds\, and waterfowl occur on Appledore as migrants – making it a perfect spot to observe fall movements. \nThe Appledore Island Migration Banding Station will be in operation and we will have the chance to observe songbird migrants up close. Neighboring White and Seavey Islands are home to a thriving Common\, Roseate\, and Arctic tern colony after restoration efforts were initiated by NH Audubon in 1997. Most of the terns will have started their southern journey\, but we will take a boat tour of the islands\, hear project details\, and land if possible. \nIn addition to all the spectacular birding that the islands have to offer\, we will take time to explore other aspects of Appledore\, Shoals Marine Laboratory\, and Celia Thaxter’s garden. Activities may include exploring the intertidal\, an island history walk\, or learning about SML’s innovative research programs focused on understanding and sustaining the marine environment. \nRegistration and details here.

Please join us on Thursday\, August 22 to celebrate her amazing years of service to conservation in New Hampshire. People are welcome to gather at the McLane Center in Concord anytime from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. Becky asks that you please wear a name tag to help her and everyone connect. She’s been working at NH Audubon since February 2\, 1988 and looks forward to seeing volunteers\, members\, friends\, and staff that she has known over the years. There will be light refreshments. \nBecky has asked that\, in lieu of any gifts\, donations be made to the New Hampshire Bird Records Endowment Fund at NH Audubon. DESCRIPTION:2024 Red Barn Series\, Newfound Audubon\nNo registration necessary – just come and join us! \nSpeaker: Bob Fleck\, Author/Photographer \n“In all things of Nature\, there is something of the marvelous.” ~ Aristotle \nThe selection of photographic images to be presented in this lecture portray the artist’s interpretation of Aristotle’s ancient words. Curated from photographs taken by Bob Fleck over the past decade\, the overarching theme of the lecture is “finding the marvelous” available to us to witness in the natural world and bringing it into focus via photography and patience (plus a little luck!). We need not travel beyond New Hampshire and New England to be in awe. \nAs we ponder the images presented\, we will search for the details\, the “marvelous”\, the overall beauty that abounds in nature. Many instances presented by the photographer were but a moment in time\, yet a memory forever. The presentation represents such a small fraction of what is discoverable\, if we only take the time to look and see (and sometimes lucky enough to capture) “something of the marvelous”. Bob will also discuss some of his equipment and how some of the images were captured. Questions are encouraged throughout the session. \nMany of the images from his book\, “Seasons At A New England Bog – A Photographic Essay”\, as well as many other examples of the “marvels” of nature will be shared during the lecture/discussion. \nA musical montage of pages from the book will start shortly prior to the main presentation as people are arriving.
