SUMMARY:"The Connecticut: New England's Greatest River" Program with the Lakes Region Audubon Chapter
DESCRIPTION:The largest river in New England rises in a small beaver pond near the Canadian border and flows over 400 miles through four states\, falling 2\,670 feet to the sea through America’s only watershed-based national fish and wildlife refuge. Adair Mulligan leads an armchair tour of this great river in New Hampshire and Vermont\, exploring its history and natural beauty through the seasons and among the communities that have sprung up along its banks. Next\, the discussion will shift to how the river has influenced the lives of those who live there\, and how they\, in turn\, have affected the river. Much more than a travelogue\, this presentation explores the many issues involved in managing the health of this major river\, and how citizens from all walks of life have created a vision for its future. SUMMARY:Painting the Natural Landscape Exhibit Reception
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the Painting the Natural Landscape Exhibit at the McLane Center with Diane Crespo! \nNature is all around us and artist Diane Crespo is drawn to capturing the essence of the landscape in her vivid oil paintings. From the mountains to the sea\, all across New England\, nature’s beauty is\never-changing and beckons to be painted. Certain elements such as water can bring about a feeling of calm in the ebb and flow of tidal marshes\, while the sky and light help to describe form and design that is\, in itself simple and complex. The changing seasons offer an abundance of opportunity to view the dappling of shadows across a field of green or the cool shadows laden on a winter’s snow. In ‘Painting the Natural Landscape’ you will discover scenes across New England through the eyes of the artist. \n \nBio: Diane Crespo is an academically trained landscape painter living in Southeast New Hampshire. She earned her BFA from New Hampshire Institute of Art in 2011. Prior to pursuing a fine art degree\, Diane painted only with pastels\, taking classes with a local pastel teacher. Diane paints primarily in oils and pastels\, and commonly paints over acrylic under-paintings or tonal under-paintings with oil paint. When her schedule allows\, Diane will start a painting outdoors and finish it in the studio or she will use it as a study for a future studio painting. \nLiving in New England\, there is endless inspiration for Diane’s paintings. As a nature lover\, Diane sees beauty from the coast to the mountains while she’s either walking the beach or hiking in the White Mountains. Diane’s paintings are in private collections worldwide\, many of which have been commissioned landscapes as well as pet portraits. Painting animals in pastel is also one of Diane’s passions. “Pastels are the perfect medium to achieve the softness of the fur.”Her paintings can be viewed in person by appointment or by chance at Diane Crespo Fine Art\, located at 27 Front Street\, Exeter\, New Hampshire\, or at many yearly shows she participates in. \n“My landscapes take viewers to many places\, some are familiar\, some are dreamlike….”\n~Diane Crespo

SUMMARY:Wildlife of New Hampshire Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:From the majestic White Mountains of the North\, to the rocky shores of the New Hampshire coast\, and even simply in his own backyard\, Cameron has searched far and wide to document the different species that inhabit the Granite State. From incredibly rare vagrant birds\, to the most common species you’d see walking down the street\, these photographs hope to show off the breadth of ecological diversity close to home. Each photo comes with a story: some are harrowing trips that took weeks to plan\, others just involve pure\, dumb luck\, but each encounter created an unforgettable moment. \nExamples of Cameron’s work.\nBio: Cameron is a wildlife photographer and a resident of Dover\, New Hampshire. He got his start in photography as a concert photographer and a photojournalist and developed a passion for birding during the summer of 2021. He now spends his free time helping run the New Hampshire Rare Bird Alert Groupme\, volunteering with New Hampshire Audubon and the Harris Center\, and photographing as much wildlife as possible.

SUMMARY:Brockway Wee Explorers: Needles\, Cones\, and Evergreens
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this year\, we talked about trees that drop their leaves in the autumn. However\, some trees keep their leaves throughout the year\, and will stay green — even in wintertime! Join New Hampshire Audubon at the John Brockway Nature Preserve in Hopkinton to explore nature with your 3-5 year old as we look at the evergreen wonder of coniferous trees. \nThe program will begin at 10am and last about 45 minutes. This is an outdoor location with no bathroom facilities. Please dress children for the weather and be ready to walk on the trail\, sit on logs and the ground\, and dig in the dirt! \nPrograms will be cancelled if poor weather is predicted during the program time; participants will be notified by email of cancellations. \nFor detailed directions to the preserve\, search for Brockway Pond on Google Maps or visit this webpage. \nThis program is free\, with a suggested donation of $5 which can be made with cash in person or by visiting our donation page. Thanks to an endowment from Dorothy Brockway Osborne\, this program is free for Hopkinton Residents.

SUMMARY:Range-wide Migratory Connectivity of the American Redstart
DESCRIPTION:Global change threatens life on our planet. Migratory birds are particularly at risk\, suffering multiple threats of global change during different stages of their full annual cycle. Moreover\, stages of the full annual cycle are inextricably linked\, where events during the nonbreeding period can influence events during the breeding period and vice versa. If we hope to elucidate how global change affects migratory birds\, we must understand where populations go throughout the year\, i.e.\, their migratory connectivity\, or the degree to which populations remain together throughout their annual cycle. Understanding patterns of migratory connectivity are critical for tackling ecological questions about migratory birds\, as the degree to which populations remain together throughout their seasonal movements determines their exposure to threats like habitat loss and disease\, among others. To bridge this knowledge gap\, Henry Stevens\, PhD student at Georgetown University\, used a full annual cycle perspective in his study of American Redstarts (Setophaga ruticilla)\, a migratory songbird in decline. This well-studied warbler occupies a range of habitats and has been a focal study system for understanding the ecology of migratory birds over the past 30+ years. This makes redstarts an ideal study species for uncovering how global change drives changes in migratory bird distributions. Here Henry\, (a) discovers undescribed patterns of migratory connectivity for redstarts by collecting tracking data from across their range\, and (b) combines them with other forms of data on migratory connectivity to develop the first integrated\, range-wide migratory connectivity map. \nBio: Henry graduated from Tufts University in 2019 with a joint BS in Biology and Environmental Science. He grew up in Exeter\, NH\, where he discovered his passion for ornithology. He LOVES birds and his desire to understand their ecology is what gets him out of bed in the morning. Henry’s research interests lie at the intersection of conservation ornithology and tropical ecology\, and his past research has focused on the breeding biology and dispersal of Gray Vireos in New Mexico\, the use of remote audio recorders for surveying cryptic species in the Amazon\, improving the conservation site network for migratory shorebirds in the Americas\, and uncovering the life histories of Andean Cock-of-the-rocks and other understudied species in the cloud forest of Ecuador. At Georgetown\, Henry has studied the full annual cycle of Neotropical migratory wood-warblers\, and used integrated population models to pinpoint factors driving their declines. With over 3.2 billion individual birds lost in North America since 1970\, understanding and addressing the threats faced by these species is paramount for mitigating further declines. \nAll of the in-person programs start at 7:30pm\, with 7pm refreshments.
