SUMMARY:Native New Hampshire Birds Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:“Native New Hampshire Birds” Exhibit: September 12-November 2 (Reception on September 20 from 4-6pm) \nArtist Shannon Bender has enjoyed creating from a young age. The journey for this series started last year. She wanted to create a theme that Upper Valley residents could relate to. Being in an area with so many that take part in bird watching with a variation of birds\, she thought\, “What a joy for people to see some of the many species that we have here in a painting series.” \nIn addition\, the exhibition displays the different characteristics of each bird. Each original piece takes anywhere between 17-65 hours of strategic feather painting and many layers of acrylic which bring the painting to its final resting state. \n(Collage of paintings from the exhibit\, by Shannon Bender.)\nBio: Shannon is an alumnus of Canaan Elementary School and Mascoma HighSchool. She studied Fine Arts at Lassell College in Massachusetts for a time. \nIn the Mascoma District\, she worked as a Special Paraeducator for 10 years. She is now a certified Special Paraeducator at the Hanover Street School in Lebanon\, New Hampshire. \nShe is a local artist\, residing in Enfield\, NH. Her favorite mediums are pencil\, acrylic\, and tempera paints.

SUMMARY:The Shaping of New Hampshire’s Landscapes by Past Glaciations
DESCRIPTION:This program by Dr. Joe Licciardi\, Professor of Earth Sciences at UNH\, will explore the glacial history of New Hampshire and how these processes helped create and sculpt the modern landforms and landscapes we see today. Geologically speaking\, the glacial features that dominate much of the state are quite young and developed about 15\,000 years ago during the Pleistocene Epoch. The presentation will highlight the distinctive land forms in the New Hampshire Seacoast that owe their origin to past glacial activity and sea-level changes. \nBio: Dr. Joe Licciardi is a Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of New Hampshire. He received his B.A.s in Geology and Geography from State University of New York at Geneseo\, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Geology from Oregon State University. Since starting his position at UNH in 2002\, he has taught classes and conducted research in glacial geology\, historical geology\, paleoclimatology\, and volcanology. His research group has worked in a range of study sites including Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks\, Alaska\, Iceland\, and Peru. Several student-led projects have recently focused on the glacial history of the New Hampshire Seacoast region. \nAll of the in-person programs start at 7:30pm\, with 7pm refreshments. For more information see the chapter website.

SUMMARY:Fall Pelagic Birding Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon aboard MV Granite State as we explore Jeffreys Ledge\, 20 miles off the New Hampshire coast. This is an all-day expedition (between 8-10 hours at sea)\, departing from Rye Harbor\, to look for pelagic (ocean-going) seabirds on Jeffreys Ledge\, although we’ll also keep an eye out for whales and other marine life. Jeffreys Ledge is an undersea ridge running northeast from near Rockport\, Massachusetts to near Cape Elizabeth\, Maine. Its steep sides produce upwellings of nutrient-rich waters that produce a lot of food for seabirds and marine life. \nWhat we will see:\nFrom the upper deck\, a person with good binoculars can scan a circle of ocean a couple of miles across\, with a good chance of seeing groups of birds quite some distance away. On past fall trips\, we have seen four different species of Shearwater (Great\, Sooty\, Cory’s\, and Manx)\, Northern Gannets\, Red-necked Phalaropes in fall plumage\, Wilson’s Storm-petrel\, jaegers\, an array of near-shore species\, and random migrants. We’ve also seen several different species of whales and dolphins\, including Fin\, Minke\, Right\, and Humpback Whales\, Harbor Porpoises\, Atlantic White-Sided Dolphins\, and once a rare Sperm Whale on the outer edge of Jeffreys Ledge. \nPresenter:\nRenowned birders and NH Audubon volunteers Steve and Jane Mirick will be our group leaders\, with Captain Pete Reynolds driving the boat. NH Audubon volunteer and avid birder Jon Woolf will coordinate logistics. \nFor mobility\, sensory\, behavioral\, or other accessibility accommodations\, please contact Slater Roosa. \nCost:\n$80 for NH Audubon members\n$100 for non-members (Join or renew your membership today! Not sure of your membership status? Email our member services department or call (603) 224-9909 x310.) \nRegistration Required.\nNH Audubon’s ticket system utilizes PayPal to process payments. Users are not required to use PayPal to check out; a guest option is provided. PayPal is a trusted way to pay online. \nPlease note we have set a maximum of 50 people\, to allow for comfortable spacing and an enjoyable bird-watching experience. These trips sell out quickly\, and we do not run a waiting list. \nThis trip is weather-dependent. Final decisions on whether we can comfortably set sail will be made the day before. There are no rain dates. First priority for registration will be granted to participants from the previous tour’s weather cancellation\, if applicable. \nConfirmation letters\, including the webinar Zoom link and information about what to bring and what to wear\, will be sent to all participants after we sell out (typically in early September). \nPhoto: Corys Shearwater\, Steve Mirick.
