During these sessions\, typically 8-10 artists bring their work (either an in-progress or a completed work). Each piece is displayed before the group and generates a friendly discussion centered on suggestions that help lead to a more exciting work of art. The main focus of the work is realism\, however\, abstract artists also benefit from the feedback process. Recently\, there has been a nature focus within the group\, including many paintings of bird species\, in particular. Collaborating with NH Audubon to display these pieces is a natural connection. We look forward to generating interest and excitement for our works with other art-\, bird-\, and nature- enthusiasts. \n \nThe exhibit will be on display in the Massabesic Center’s large function room during regular operating hours. SUMMARY:Hornbills: A Unique Old-World Family of Birds
DESCRIPTION:Dana and Bob Fox are excited to present this talk about the family of birds called Hornbills. Hornbills are an Old-World family of birds which first evolved in Africa over 60 million years ago and then one species radiated to Asia. Today half of the 64 species in the world live in Africa including two land-loving species and half in Asia where new species have evolved as far east as the Solomon Islands. As their name suggests\, they have massive bills which are integrally attached to their skulls\, and some have an additional special horny crown-like protrusion called a casque above their bills. In 1758\, Linnaeus bestowed the name Buceros on the family\, Latin for “having ox’s horns.” Another unique feature of most members of this family involves their nesting behavior. Females of almost all species make unique nests in tree cavities using their bills to wall themselves in with a plaster made of mud\, droppings\, chewed wood and bark and other detritus. They leave only a slit narrow enough to deter predators but sufficiently wide for the male to present food from the outside. The tree hornbills have become very important distributors of tropical fruit seeds. Come hear Dana and Bob’s tales of seeing these marvelous birds and see stunning pictures taken by Tim Layman\, the intrepid\, talented photographer. \nBio: Dana and Bob Fox both began birding in their youth. They have birded the US (list 750 species) and the world (6500 species) visiting 6 continents and over 40 countries. They have given numerous talks in New England about the birds of countries they have visited and on crows\, loons and most recently hummingbirds. \nDana joined the South Shore Bird Club (SSBC) in 1951 when she was 12 years old. She has spent most summers in Tuftonboro\, NH where she became fascinated by loons. The Loon Preservation Committee (LPC) presented her with their Spirit of the Loon Award. She is a past Secretary of the Nuttall Ornithological Club\, Past President of the Merrimack Valley Bird Club and frequent speaker. She has written articles on birding and crows in the American Birding Association’s Birding magazine and one on the Lawrence Crow Roost in Bird Observer. Dana coordinates the Tin Mountain Conservation Group’s Loon Monitoring Project for LPC and helps to train the LPC summer biologists on interacting with volunteers. \nBob\, as a student at Harvard and living in Quincy\, MA\, was an early leader of the SSBC. With Allan Keith\, a former member of the SSBC\, he co-authored\, Birds of New Hampshire\, a 477 page book describing the status and distribution of birds known from NH (2013). He has published in Auk and Wilson Bulletin\, written species accounts for the first MA Breeding Bird Atlas as well as articles in publications of both NH and Mass Audubon Societies. His MA species list is 451. In the past\, Bob collected specimens for five museums including the Museum of Comparative Zoology. In addition\, he helped found Manomet Bird Observatory\, and is past President of South Shore Bird Club. He received the Goodhue-Elkins Award (2014) from NH Audubon for “contributions to the ornithology of NH.”

SUMMARY:Pondicherry Migratory Bird Day Walk Two
DESCRIPTION:The 23rd Annual Pondicherry Migratory Bird Day is Saturday\, 10 May 2025. Two consecutive walks are free and open to the public. The first event\, which starts at 6 am and ends at 8 am\, meets at the overlook at Airport Marsh on Airport Road in Whitefield\, NH. Airport Marsh has a mix of water\, wetland\, shrub\, and grassland habitats. Over the past several years\, 183 species have been recorded at Airport Marsh\, although we will be happy with 40 species. \nThe second event starts at the Pondicherry Trailhead at 289 Airport Road in Whitefield\, NH\, at 8 am. We will walk the rail trail to Cherry Pond\, a distance of 1.5 miles. We will look and listen for various warblers and other species. From the Tudor Richard Observation Platform at Cherry Pond\, guides will lead walks to Little Cherry Pond\, searching for black-backed woodpeckers and migrating warblers. We will also visit Moorhen Marsh for wetland species\, including marsh wrens and swamp sparrows. We have several expert volunteer guides to help us find and identify species. \nWe generally finish around 2 pm\, although birders can stay longer or leave earlier. The total walking distance for the Cherry and Little Cherry Ponds walk is around 5 miles with an elevation change of only 20 feet. Bring binoculars\, lunch\, water\, and dress for the weather. We may encounter a few black flies. This particular date is often the birdiest weekend of the migration season. The event is free and is sponsored by the Ammonoosuc Chapter of NH Audubon\, Friends of Pondicherry\, and the Silvio Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. \nThe World Migratory Bird Day 2025 theme is “Shared Spaces – Creating Bird-Friendly Communities.” Free educational posters featuring this theme will be available. \nFriends of Pondicherry website. \nIf you have any questions\, contact the organizer\, David Govatski. \nCover photo by Phil Brown.

SUMMARY:Pondicherry Migratory Bird Day Walk One
DESCRIPTION:The 23rd Annual Pondicherry Migratory Bird Day is Saturday\, 10 May 2025. Two consecutive walks are free and open to the public. The first event\, which starts at 6 am and ends at 8 am\, meets at the overlook at Airport Marsh on Airport Road in Whitefield\, NH. Airport Marsh has a mix of water\, wetland\, shrub\, and grassland habitats. Over the past several years\, 183 species have been recorded at Airport Marsh\, although we will be happy with 40 species. \nThe second event starts at the Pondicherry Trailhead at 289 Airport Road in Whitefield\, NH\, at 8 am. We will walk the rail trail to Cherry Pond\, a distance of 1.5 miles. We will look and listen for various warblers and other species. From the Tudor Richard Observation Platform at Cherry Pond\, guides will lead walks to Little Cherry Pond\, searching for black-backed woodpeckers and migrating warblers. We will also visit Moorhen Marsh for wetland species\, including marsh wrens and swamp sparrows. We have several expert volunteer guides to help us find and identify species. \nWe generally finish around 2 pm\, although birders can stay longer or leave earlier. The total walking distance for the Cherry and Little Cherry Ponds walk is around 5 miles with an elevation change of only 20 feet. Bring binoculars\, lunch\, water\, and dress for the weather. We may encounter a few black flies. This particular date is often the birdiest weekend of the migration season. DESCRIPTION:‘Simply Nature’ is an exhibit of a relatively small portion of Pierre Garand’s catalog of Nature photographs. For nearly sixty years\, Pierre’s primary photographic subject has been Nature. He considers Her to be the artist\, and he a mere agent\, exploring\, discovering\, recording and presenting Her masterworks. This exhibit comprises a tiny taste of Nature’s diversity\, beauty\, and even a little whimsy: Her landscapes\, flora\, fauna and the elements that support them. In most cases\, Pierre brings the viewer as close to the subject as he physically or optically can\, presenting them with a perspective or in a unique moment that the viewer may not otherwise experience. (All but one of these images were captured in New Hampshire at or near Pierre’s home just inland of the New Hampshire Seacoast region. None of the images are AI generated.) \nBarred Owl photographed by Pierra Garand.\n  \nBio: Pierre Garand has been making photographs\, drawing with light for nearly sixty years. With occasional diversions\, his primary subject has been the Natural World\, usually as close-up as he physically or optically can get. He considers Mother Nature to be an artist who challenges him to discover\, record and share Her amazing works. With the rising evidence of climate change in recent years\, he’s come to consider his photographs a record\, a visual history of a major transition in Nature. SUMMARY:Birding Outing at the John Brockway Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a birding outing along the trails at the John Brockway Nature Preserve! The Brockway Preserve houses forest and wetland habitat\, and has great conditions for birds like Song Sparrows\, Great Blue Herons\, and Wood Ducks. \nThis is an informal birding outing that begins at the center parking lot and explores the trails with former NH Audubon biologist Mark Suomala and Newfound Center Coordinator Devin Guilfoyle. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nThis is a free event. Binocular rental is provided. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly flat trials through wooded terrain. Trails may be soggy or muddy in the rainy season. Dogs are not allowed on this walk. We will meet in the preserve’s parking lot on Farrington Corner Road in Hopkinton. DESCRIPTION:‘Simply Nature’ is an exhibit of a relatively small portion of Pierre Garand’s catalog of Nature photographs. For nearly sixty years\, Pierre’s primary photographic subject has been Nature. He considers Her to be the artist\, and he a mere agent\, exploring\, discovering\, recording and presenting Her masterworks. This exhibit comprises a tiny taste of Nature’s diversity\, beauty\, and even a little whimsy: Her landscapes\, flora\, fauna and the elements that support them. In most cases\, Pierre brings the viewer as close to the subject as he physically or optically can\, presenting them with a perspective or in a unique moment that the viewer may not otherwise experience. (All but one of these images were captured in New Hampshire at or near Pierre’s home just inland of the New Hampshire Seacoast region. None of the images are AI generated.) \nBarred Owl photographed by Pierra Garand.\n  \nBio: Pierre Garand has been making photographs\, drawing with light for nearly sixty years. With occasional diversions\, his primary subject has been the Natural World\, usually as close-up as he physically or optically can get. He considers Mother Nature to be an artist who challenges him to discover\, record and share Her amazing works. With the rising evidence of climate change in recent years\, he’s come to consider his photographs a record\, a visual history of a major transition in Nature.
