SUMMARY:Creative Nature Ventures Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit highlights the nature-inspired work of a group of local artists\, led by Bill Turner\, that meets once a week at Creative Ventures\, located in Milford\, NH. During these sessions\, typically 8-10 artists bring their work (either an in-progress or a completed work). Each piece is displayed before the group and generates a friendly discussion centered on suggestions that help lead to a more exciting work of art. The main focus of the work is realism\, however\, abstract artists also benefit from the feedback process. Recently\, there has been a nature focus within the group\, including many paintings of bird species\, in particular. Collaborating with NH Audubon to display these pieces is a natural connection. We look forward to generating interest and excitement for our works with other art-\, bird-\, and nature- enthusiasts. \n \nThe exhibit will be on display in the Massabesic Center’s large function room during regular operating hours. Viewing access may be restricted during private event rentals and education programs. Calling ahead to confirm is recommended.

SUMMARY:Birding Outing at Paradise Point
DESCRIPTION:May 23\, 2025 –Celebrate the seasonal opening of Paradise Point Nature Center with a birding walk before the center opens! This walk will go through the trails of Paradise Point Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary consists mostly of Eastern Hemlock forest in addition to a red maple swamp and beautiful views of Newfound Lake. Birds seen on this walk previously include Red-eyed Vireo\, Black-throated Green Warbler\, and Common Loon. After the walk\, the center will be opened to the public to explore! \nThis is an informal birding outing that begins at the center parking lot and explores the trails with Newfound Center staff. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nThis is a free event. Binocular rental is provided. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over varied trails with some elevation change through wooded terrain. Trails may be soggy or muddy. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intimate guided tour of the gardens at the Massabesic Center in Auburn. We will lead you on a fun ramble of the grounds\, and dig into the history\, upkeep\, and future of each of our unique garden spaces. \nYou’ll learn about NH Audubon’s partnership with the University of New Hampshire Extension’s Master Gardener Program to create Demonstration Gardens that provide a place for sharing best practices in eco-friendly home and community gardening\, for human health and well-being and wildlife habitat. These gardens include spaces for pollinators\, birds\, butterflies\, veggies\, rainwater\, and an ornamental space that serves as the backdrop for wedding ceremonies. \nYou’ll also learn about our community partnership with the Massabesic Garden Club and their efforts to rehabilitate the space lovingly called the Barn Garden. \nLast but not least\, discover our plan for expanding the Garden for the Senses\, and take a peaceful pause in the Cathy Small Memorial Garden. \nYou’ll leave with an appreciation for the hard work that goes into our spaces by the team of over 40 volunteers who maintain our grounds. We’ll provide information for upcoming educational workshops and ways you can get involved with volunteering in our gardens. \nDress for walking in short grass on flat but uneven terrain. The walk will last as long as participants choose\, but not beyond noon. Meet at 8:00 across from the Strafford County Work Program at 266 County Farm Road; follow County Farm Road and take a left at the stop sign and then an immediate left to continue along behind the jail to the parking lot across from the entrance to the Strafford County Work Program. SUMMARY:Pawtuckaway State Park Birding
DESCRIPTION:Occupying over 5\,000 acres\, Pawtuckaway State Park is the largest state park in Rockingham County. Join trip leader Ben Griffith to explore this unique natural area which is home to a diverse group of birds including such typically northern nesting species as Dark-eyed Junco\, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker\, and Evening Grosbeaks. At the same time\, more southerly species such as Yellow-throated Vireo\, Louisiana Waterthrush\, and Prairie Warbler are common breeders in the park as well. We’ll hope to find these species and more\, along with any migrants that may just be passing through. Be prepared for moderate hiking with limited access to bathrooms or other facilities. We’ll meet at the Dunkin Donuts in Raymond at 7 am to carpool. The trip is expected to last until about noon with the possibility of extending the visit to a few other nearby areas. SUMMARY:Hornbills: A Unique Old-World Family of Birds
DESCRIPTION:Dana and Bob Fox are excited to present this talk about the family of birds called Hornbills. Hornbills are an Old-World family of birds which first evolved in Africa over 60 million years ago and then one species radiated to Asia. Today half of the 64 species in the world live in Africa including two land-loving species and half in Asia where new species have evolved as far east as the Solomon Islands. As their name suggests\, they have massive bills which are integrally attached to their skulls\, and some have an additional special horny crown-like protrusion called a casque above their bills. In 1758\, Linnaeus bestowed the name Buceros on the family\, Latin for “having ox’s horns.” Another unique feature of most members of this family involves their nesting behavior. Females of almost all species make unique nests in tree cavities using their bills to wall themselves in with a plaster made of mud\, droppings\, chewed wood and bark and other detritus. They leave only a slit narrow enough to deter predators but sufficiently wide for the male to present food from the outside. The tree hornbills have become very important distributors of tropical fruit seeds. Come hear Dana and Bob’s tales of seeing these marvelous birds and see stunning pictures taken by Tim Layman\, the intrepid\, talented photographer. \nBio: Dana and Bob Fox both began birding in their youth. They have birded the US (list 750 species) and the world (6500 species) visiting 6 continents and over 40 countries. They have given numerous talks in New England about the birds of countries they have visited and on crows\, loons and most recently hummingbirds. \nDana joined the South Shore Bird Club (SSBC) in 1951 when she was 12 years old. She has spent most summers in Tuftonboro\, NH where she became fascinated by loons. The Loon Preservation Committee (LPC) presented her with their Spirit of the Loon Award. She is a past Secretary of the Nuttall Ornithological Club\, Past President of the Merrimack Valley Bird Club and frequent speaker. She has written articles on birding and crows in the American Birding Association’s Birding magazine and one on the Lawrence Crow Roost in Bird Observer. Dana coordinates the Tin Mountain Conservation Group’s Loon Monitoring Project for LPC and helps to train the LPC summer biologists on interacting with volunteers. \nBob\, as a student at Harvard and living in Quincy\, MA\, was an early leader of the SSBC. With Allan Keith\, a former member of the SSBC\, he co-authored\, Birds of New Hampshire\, a 477 page book describing the status and distribution of birds known from NH (2013). He has published in Auk and Wilson Bulletin\, written species accounts for the first MA Breeding Bird Atlas as well as articles in publications of both NH and Mass Audubon Societies. His MA species list is 451. In the past\, Bob collected specimens for five museums including the Museum of Comparative Zoology. In addition\, he helped found Manomet Bird Observatory\, and is past President of South Shore Bird Club. He received the Goodhue-Elkins Award (2014) from NH Audubon for “contributions to the ornithology of NH.”

See the calendar for alternative\, upcoming bird outings to join. \nJoin NH Audubon in our World Migratory Bird Day celebration by coming to a birding outing! Devin Guilfoyle\, center coordinator of NH Audubon’s Newfound Center\, will lead a walk through this globally rare ecosystem in Manchester. We’ll be looking for migratory species in Manchester such as the Black-and-white Warbler\, the Common Yellowthroat\, and the Baltimore Oriole. \nThis is a free event with binocular rentals available. We will meet in the parking lot off of Countryside Boulevard. Expect to walk 1-2 miles with some hills and spots with uneven footing. DESCRIPTION:This event is cancelled due to inclement weather. See the calendar for alternative\, upcoming bird outings to join. \nCelebrate World Migratory Bird Day with NH Audubon! This walk will be led by local birder and Massabesic Center Advisory Committee member\, Joe Mahoney\, and will focus on our early migratory arrivals. We will cross through mostly wooded and wetland habitats and we can expect to see a variety of waterfowl and wetland species. We will meet at the Dorrs Pond parking lot and travel the trail around the pond. \nThis is a free event with binocular rentals available. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly flat\, but uneven trails through grassy and wooded terrain. Trails may be soggy\, snowy\, or icy. Dogs are not allowed on this walk. \nPlease review NH Audubon’s Outdoor Education Program Liability Release & Agreement Waiver before registering.
