SUMMARY:A Season in the Sun Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:A Season in the Sun: Photographs from the Massabesic Center’s Demonstration Garden by Walt Swist \nWalt Swist photos from the NH Audubon Massabesic Center’s Demonstration Gardens.\nTake a photographic journey with Walt Swist through the 2024 season in the NH Audubon Massabesic Center’s Demonstration Gardens! Experience the magical pollinator gardens in full bloom and the amazing bounty of the vegetable and herb gardens\, with side tours of the wedding garden\, the barn garden\, the bird-friendly gardens\, the memorial garden\, the rain garden\, the wildflower garden\, the garden for the senses\, and more. These gardens present opportunities for home and community gardeners to observe and learn best practices in a beautiful natural setting. \nAs an additional benefit\, we donate most of our fresh vegetables and herbs to the Families in Transition Food Pantry and Dining Services in Manchester. We also provide vegetables for our favorite Animal Ambassadors who reside at the Massabesic Center. In 2024 we harvested about 543 pounds of vegetables and herbs. \nSome of these photos are simple direct views of the harvest in the field\, with vegetables and herbs dutifully lining up to be weighed and counted. In other photos the vegetables\, herbs and flowers take center stage to tell their own unique stories\, often revealing whimsical individual personalities and sharing the secret joys of life of the garden. \nThis exhibit is a departure from our typical showroom gallery\, and will be displayed in our main hall\, which will be fully accessible during standard Massabesic Center hours Wednesdays to Saturdays from 11am to 5pm. Meet the artist during our Art Walk in the Garden event on July 12th. Walt will be talking about his work with guests in the main hall exhibit area between 10:30am and 12:30pm. \nBio: Walt is a volunteer with the UNH Extension Master Gardener program and a resident of Manchester\, New Hampshire. He is also a NH Audubon volunteer in the demonstration gardens at the Massabesic Center in Auburn\, where he helps grow and harvest produce in the vegetable and herb gardens. He enjoys photographing the diversity and beauty of the natural world enhanced with an occasional dash of whimsical storytelling.

SUMMARY:Creative Nature Ventures Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit highlights the nature-inspired work of a group of local artists\, led by Bill Turner\, that meets once a week at Creative Ventures\, located in Milford\, NH. During these sessions\, typically 8-10 artists bring their work (either an in-progress or a completed work). Each piece is displayed before the group and generates a friendly discussion centered on suggestions that help lead to a more exciting work of art. The main focus of the work is realism\, however\, abstract artists also benefit from the feedback process. Recently\, there has been a nature focus within the group\, including many paintings of bird species\, in particular. Collaborating with NH Audubon to display these pieces is a natural connection. We look forward to generating interest and excitement for our works with other art-\, bird-\, and nature- enthusiasts. \n \nThe exhibit will be on display in the Massabesic Center’s large function room during regular operating hours. Viewing access may be restricted during private event rentals and education programs. Calling ahead to confirm is recommended.

SUMMARY:Return to the Sky: A Journey with Tina Morris to Return Bald Eagles to the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Tina Morris\, one of the first women to engage in a raptor reintroduction program\, shares her remarkable story that is as much about the human spirit as it is about birds of prey as she presents her book Return to the Sky. \nTina Morris holding a 1977 eaglet who had just escaped and she returned to the tower.\nAlone in a vast wildlife refuge with little direction and no experience\, a Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology student found herself responsible for a project of historical importance—to bring the Bald Eagle back from near extinction. Ultimately\, Tina spent two years playing “mother” to seven eaglets at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge\, east of Seneca Falls in New York. Driven by her passion\, she discovered unknown reserves of patience\, determination\, and grit. \nAfterwards\, pick up a copy of the book in our Nature Store and have it signed by Tina! \n(Cover image of Return to the Sky.)

We will lead you on a fun ramble of the grounds\, and dig into the history\, upkeep\, and future of each of our unique garden spaces. \nYou’ll learn about NH Audubon’s partnership with the University of New Hampshire Extension’s Master Gardener Program to create Demonstration Gardens that provide a place for sharing best practices in eco-friendly home and community gardening\, for human health and well-being and wildlife habitat. These gardens include spaces for pollinators\, birds\, butterflies\, veggies\, rainwater\, and an ornamental space that serves as the backdrop for wedding ceremonies. \nYou’ll also learn about our community partnership with the Massabesic Garden Club and their efforts to rehabilitate the space lovingly called the Barn Garden. \nLast but not least\, discover our plan for expanding the Garden for the Senses\, and take a peaceful pause in the Cathy Small Memorial Garden. \nYou’ll leave with an appreciation for the hard work that goes into our spaces by the team of over 40 volunteers who maintain our grounds. We’ll provide information for upcoming educational workshops and ways you can get involved with volunteering in our gardens. \nDress for walking in short grass on flat but uneven terrain. Bring your camera\, sunscreen\, bug spray\, and questions about creating pollinator habitat at your home. \nThis event is free to attend.
SUMMARY:Identifying Trees and Shrubs and Their Ecological Role as Habitat for Birds
DESCRIPTION:This program will be from 8:30-11:30 am at Burley Farm in Epping. The program will be limited to 15 participants. This event will be held entirely outdoors and will be held as long as it is not raining. Participants should bring their binoculars and clothing appropriate for the weather conditions at the time of the event. \nThis program\, by Matt Tarr of UNH Cooperative Extension\, will teach you how to identify the most common native and non-native shrubs that comprise many bird habitats in NH. We will identify each shrub species\, discuss how each species functions as bird habitat\, and which shrubs you want to encourage on your land to benefit birds. We will also be looking and listening for birds (of course!) and sharing our tips for how to identify the birds we encounter during the trip. \nBio: Matt Tarr is an Extension Professor and State Wildlife Habitat Specialist for the University of NH Cooperative Extension. Much of Matt’s research and work is focused on determining how non-native shrubs function as habitat for songbirds and on how birds respond to land-use and habitat management practices at different landscape scales. Matt is an avid birder who enjoys photographing and recording birds.
