SUMMARY:Pondicherry Migratory Bird Day Walk Two
DESCRIPTION:The 23rd Annual Pondicherry Migratory Bird Day is Saturday\, 10 May 2025. Two consecutive walks are free and open to the public. The first event\, which starts at 6 am and ends at 8 am\, meets at the overlook at Airport Marsh on Airport Road in Whitefield\, NH. Airport Marsh has a mix of water\, wetland\, shrub\, and grassland habitats. Over the past several years\, 183 species have been recorded at Airport Marsh\, although we will be happy with 40 species. \nThe second event starts at the Pondicherry Trailhead at 289 Airport Road in Whitefield\, NH\, at 8 am. We will walk the rail trail to Cherry Pond\, a distance of 1.5 miles. We will look and listen for various warblers and other species. From the Tudor Richard Observation Platform at Cherry Pond\, guides will lead walks to Little Cherry Pond\, searching for black-backed woodpeckers and migrating warblers. We will also visit Moorhen Marsh for wetland species\, including marsh wrens and swamp sparrows. We have several expert volunteer guides to help us find and identify species. \nWe generally finish around 2 pm\, although birders can stay longer or leave earlier. The total walking distance for the Cherry and Little Cherry Ponds walk is around 5 miles with an elevation change of only 20 feet. Bring binoculars\, lunch\, water\, and dress for the weather. We may encounter a few black flies. This particular date is often the birdiest weekend of the migration season. The event is free and is sponsored by the Ammonoosuc Chapter of NH Audubon\, Friends of Pondicherry\, and the Silvio Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. \nThe World Migratory Bird Day 2025 theme is “Shared Spaces – Creating Bird-Friendly Communities.” Free educational posters featuring this theme will be available. \nFriends of Pondicherry website. \nIf you have any questions\, contact the organizer\, David Govatski. \nCover photo by Phil Brown.

SUMMARY:BBW: Wiggin Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join Juli Tyson for a walk (co-sponsored by the Newmarket Conservation Commission) at Wiggin Farm in Newmarket to celebrate the first TurtleFest. Juli will highlight this beautiful piece of Newmarket conservation land on Grant Road that includes wetland\, field\, forest\, and river habitat. You’ll observe bird species just arriving for spring migration – a very exciting time of year to be out birding! This spot is not highlighted on eBird\, so this walk will present a unique opportunity to get Wiggin Farm on the birding map. After the walk\, catch up with Juli and others from the Newmarket Conservation Commission at TURTLEFEST25. Registration is not required. \n  \n(The NH Audubon Seacoast Chapter will have eight Beginner Bird Walks (BBW) this spring. Although these walks are geared with the beginner birder in mind\, birders of all levels of expertise are encouraged to participate and share their experiences. Children are gladly welcome with an adult. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars\, water\, insect repellent\, and sunscreen.)

SUMMARY:McLane Center Pollinator Garden in Pictures Exhibit Reception
DESCRIPTION:Visit the McLane today from 4-6pm to celebrate Kate Osgood’s McLane Center Pollinator Garden in Pictures Exhibit! \n“The pollinator garden at McLane Center is an ever-evolving mosaic of flora and fauna. As a volunteer\, working in the gardens has afforded me the wonderful experience of getting to know the plants and the critters that coexist. My photography attempts to highlight these interactions and to share with human visitors the beauty and the importance of the gardens.” \n  \nBio: Kate Osgood is a landscape architect and nature photographer. Originally from Exeter\, she lived and worked out west for many years before returning to the area. Her work and photography is rooted in natural systems and a deep love of nature. \n“The protection and enhancement of natural systems and wildlife ecology is the driving force behind my designs and photography. I believe that the more people experience the beauty of nature\, the more likely they are to become invested in its protection and thus foster stewardship for future generations.” \n  \nArt exhibit viewing access may be restricted during private event rentals. SUMMARY:Creative Nature Ventures Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit highlights the nature-inspired work of a group of local artists\, led by Bill Turner\, that meets once a week at Creative Ventures\, located in Milford\, NH. During these sessions\, typically 8-10 artists bring their work (either an in-progress or a completed work). Each piece is displayed before the group and generates a friendly discussion centered on suggestions that help lead to a more exciting work of art. The main focus of the work is realism\, however\, abstract artists also benefit from the feedback process. Recently\, there has been a nature focus within the group\, including many paintings of bird species\, in particular. Collaborating with NH Audubon to display these pieces is a natural connection. We look forward to generating interest and excitement for our works with other art-\, bird-\, and nature- enthusiasts. \n \nThe exhibit will be on display in the Massabesic Center’s large function room during regular operating hours. Viewing access may be restricted during private event rentals and education programs. Calling ahead to confirm is recommended.

SUMMARY:NH Audubon Book Club Meeting 2 - Tina Morris's Return to the Sky
DESCRIPTION:Join us via Zoom for a discussion and analysis of Return to the Sky. In this book\, writer Tina Morris tells about her experience in a project to reintroduce bald eagles to New York State in the mid-1970s\, discussing the challenges of both resuscitating our national symbol and being a young woman in a male-dominated field. The meeting\, facilitated by Newfound Center Coordinator and Environmental Educator Devin Guilfoyle\, will focus on themes\, reactions\, and takeaways from this book. We will break into groups during the meeting to allow for greater participation and closer conversation. Come prepared to share your thoughts and ideas! \nYou can support NH Audubon and purchase these books at the McLane Center Nature Store\, Massabesic Center Nature Shop\, or online. \nPlease RSVP below and Devin will email a Zoom invitation before the meeting.

SUMMARY:Better Homes and Windows: A Workshop for Building a Better Habitat for Birds
DESCRIPTION:The theme of this year’s World Migratory Bird Day is creating bird-friendly cities and communities. Help create a better community for birds by learning how to make different types of bird habitats and steps you can take to protect birds in your area! Learn how you can build different bird homes for different species and how to reduce bird window collisions\, which are estimated to kill one billion birds per year. Members of the education department will demonstrate how to build different bird homes\, how to reduce the likelihood of bird-window collisions\, and other things you can do to protect migrating birds. \nThis is a free event with an open house format; feel free to show up at any time within the event time frame. RSVP (one per family) by Friday\, May 2 if you would like to participate in the workshop. Walk-ins who wish to observe or ask questions are welcome. Limit to one birdhouse per family. \n(Cover image credit to Environment for the Americas.)

SUMMARY:Simply Nature Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:‘Simply Nature’ is an exhibit of a relatively small portion of Pierre Garand’s catalog of Nature photographs. For nearly sixty years\, Pierre’s primary photographic subject has been Nature. He considers Her to be the artist\, and he a mere agent\, exploring\, discovering\, recording and presenting Her masterworks. This exhibit comprises a tiny taste of Nature’s diversity\, beauty\, and even a little whimsy: Her landscapes\, flora\, fauna and the elements that support them. In most cases\, Pierre brings the viewer as close to the subject as he physically or optically can\, presenting them with a perspective or in a unique moment that the viewer may not otherwise experience. (All but one of these images were captured in New Hampshire at or near Pierre’s home just inland of the New Hampshire Seacoast region. None of the images are AI generated.) \nBarred Owl photographed by Pierra Garand.\n  \nBio: Pierre Garand has been making photographs\, drawing with light for nearly sixty years. With occasional diversions\, his primary subject has been the Natural World\, usually as close-up as he physically or optically can get. He considers Mother Nature to be an artist who challenges him to discover\, record and share Her amazing works. With the rising evidence of climate change in recent years\, he’s come to consider his photographs a record\, a visual history of a major transition in Nature. He continues to keep his eyes and ears open to the world around him for the chance to record Nature’s art\, whether already formed or in process – a stone with natural markings that look like a face\, or a pollinator busy feeding on a Goldenrod in full bloom. He takes every opportunity he can to share his photographs with the public\, in the hope of providing a revealing\, inspiring or entertaining glimpse into the Nature all around us. \n  \n30% of the proceeds from this exhibit will benefit New Hampshire Audubon. \n(Art exhibit viewing access may be restricted during private event rentals. SUMMARY:Gifts of the Garden: Engaging with the Experts
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Massabesic Center to meet the team who are outstanding in their fields and know all the dirt. No need to herb your enthusiasm! Bring your pressing questions about plants\, find your inner peas\, discover inspiration for laying down roots at home\, or just dig the blooms! \nOur volunteer team of UNH Extension Master Gardeners like to have fun and teach others about what it takes to create and maintain the luscious\, wildlife-friendly gardens on the grounds. These informal meet and greet events are the perfect way to learn about getting involved in volunteer gardening opportunities with NH Audubon\, and about ways you can duplicate our gardens in your own backyard\, whether you have an acre or a patio pot. \nThe beautiful gardens on site include pollinator and bird-friendly plants\, a rain garden space\, vegetable gardens\, raised beds\, and more. As an ongoing partnership between New Hampshire Audubon and University of New Hampshire Extension’s Master Gardener Program\, Massabesic’s Demonstration Gardens provide a place for sharing best practices in eco-friendly home and community gardening\, which enhance human health and well-being and wildlife habitat. \nDress for walking in short grass on flat but uneven terrain. Sunscreen and personal insect repellant are recommended. Building hours (and bathroom access) are 11am to 5pm\, but come early before the heat of the day chases the gardeners away. Visit the gift shop and meet our animal ambassadors after you spend your morning exploring the gardens. Consider packing a lunch to enjoy at one of the picnic tables surrounding the gardens. Children are welcomed and encouraged! \nGardeners will not be on site during inclement weather\, but visitors are still welcomed. \nThis event is free to attend. RSVP is recommended to let us know how many visitors to expect \nSupport our programs and join or renew your membership today! Not sure of your membership status? SUMMARY:Piscassic Greenway Birding
DESCRIPTION:A less frequented trail lies between Newfields and Newmarket with a beautiful habitat diversity for birders to explore. At an extended boardwalk crossing and wildlife viewing platform Tree Swallows\, Belted Kingfishers\, Green Herons\, and many more species make this wetland home. Finally\, you’ll arrive at a managed successional wildlife habitat to look for Prairie and Chestnut-sided Warblers. It will be a shorter walk\, with the opportunity to extend if the group would like\, or more time can be spent at the wildlife viewing platform. \n  \nThe trip is limited to 20 participants.
