DESCRIPTION:“Native New Hampshire Birds” Exhibit: September 12-November 2. An artist’s reception is today from 4-6pm. \nArtist Shannon Bender has enjoyed creating from a young age. The journey for this series started last year. She wanted to create a theme that Upper Valley residents could relate to. Being in an area with so many that take part in bird watching with a variation of birds\, she thought\, “What a joy for people to see some of the many species that we have here in a painting series.” \nIn addition\, the exhibition displays the different characteristics of each bird. Each original piece takes anywhere between 17-65 hours of strategic feather painting and many layers of acrylic which bring the painting to its final resting state. \n(Collage of paintings from the exhibit\, by Shannon Bender.)\nBio: Shannon is an alumnus of Canaan Elementary School and Mascoma HighSchool. She studied Fine Arts at Lassell College in Massachusetts for a time. \nIn the Mascoma District\, she worked as a Special Paraeducator for 10 years. She is now a certified Special Paraeducator at the Hanover Street School in Lebanon\, New Hampshire. \nShe is a local artist\, residing in Enfield\, NH. DESCRIPTION:With diverse habitats for water birds\, raptors and song birds\, this walk will include the Don Black Trail and the hedgerows around the fields of the conserved property. The walk will last as long as participants choose\, but not beyond noon. Meet at 8:00 across from the Strafford County Work Program at 266 County Farm Road; follow County Farm Road and take a left at the stop sign and then an immediate left to continue along behind the jail to the parking lot across from  the entrance to the Strafford County Work Program. DESCRIPTION:Join Phil Brown\, the Harris Center’s Bird Conservation Director\, for a half day of hawk watching at the Pack Monadnock Raptor Observatory in Peterborough. We will hope for a good migration flight which\, in mid-September\, can include several species of hawks and falcons as well as flocks of migrant Canada Geese\, songbirds\, and even scoters! \nLearn hawk watching ID tips from the experts and learn about the different migration strategies and behaviors of up to 15 migratory raptor species. During a visit to the hawk watch\, you’ll experience NH’s birding culture and immerse yourself in a long-standing community science project that is a partnership between the Harris Center and NH parks. DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a birding outing along the trails at the McLane Center in Concord\, NH. We will meet in the parking lot in front of the main building. \nThis is an informal birding outing that begins at the McLane parking lot and explores the trails with local birder and NH Audubon volunteer (and former wildlife biologist)\, Mark Suomala. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nMcLane provides various types of bird habitats\, including forest\, grassland\, and edge habitats. We can expect to see birds such as mourning doves\, eastern phoebes\, and gray catbirds\, as well as several woodpecker species and the potential of raptors such as red-tailed hawks. \nThis is a free event. Binocular rental is provided. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly flat\, but uneven trails through grassy and wooded terrain. Trails may be soggy or muddy in the rainy season. Dogs are not allowed on this walk.

SUMMARY:The Shaping of New Hampshire’s Landscapes by Past Glaciations
DESCRIPTION:This program by Dr. Joe Licciardi\, Professor of Earth Sciences at UNH\, will explore the glacial history of New Hampshire and how these processes helped create and sculpt the modern landforms and landscapes we see today. Geologically speaking\, the glacial features that dominate much of the state are quite young and developed about 15\,000 years ago during the Pleistocene Epoch. The presentation will highlight the distinctive land forms in the New Hampshire Seacoast that owe their origin to past glacial activity and sea-level changes. \nBio: Dr. Joe Licciardi is a Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of New Hampshire. He received his B.A.s in Geology and Geography from State University of New York at Geneseo\, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Geology from Oregon State University. Since starting his position at UNH in 2002\, he has taught classes and conducted research in glacial geology\, historical geology\, paleoclimatology\, and volcanology. His research group has worked in a range of study sites including Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks\, Alaska\, Iceland\, and Peru. Several student-led projects have recently focused on the glacial history of the New Hampshire Seacoast region. \nAll of the in-person programs start at 7:30pm\, with 7pm refreshments. UNH Extension Master Gardener Maureen Sinclair will lead you on a fun ramble of the grounds\, and dig into the history\, upkeep\, and future of each of our unique garden spaces. \nYou’ll learn about NH Audubon’s partnership with the University of New Hampshire Extension’s Master Gardener Program to create Demonstration Gardens that provide a place for sharing best practices in eco-friendly home and community gardening\, for human health and well-being and wildlife habitat. These gardens include spaces for pollinators\, birds\, butterflies\, veggies\, rainwater\, and an ornamental space that serves as the backdrop for wedding ceremonies. \nYou’ll also learn about our community partnership with the Massabesic Garden Club and their efforts to rehabilitate the space lovingly called the Barn Garden. \nLast but not least\, discover our plan for expanding the Garden for the Senses\, and take a peaceful pause in the Cathy Small Memorial Garden. \nYou’ll leave with an appreciation for the hard work that goes into our spaces by the team of over 40 volunteers who maintain our grounds. Respect for wildlife & their habitats. There is quiet discovery\, exploration\, peaceful inclusion\, time lost in nature & storytelling that unfolds with the leaves in the trees. \nThis photo journey began at a young age with childhood dreams of working for National Geographic. In awe of wilderness\, an overflowing love for all animals & the creative desire to capture moments in time was my driving force. Alpine Averill the inspiration as a remote beautiful location where life reaches perfection\, Shangri-la. \nThe goal for sharing my passion & work is to express & extend the gratitude & joy that I feel while spending time in the field with all of these amazing animals.
