DESCRIPTION:“Native New Hampshire Birds” Exhibit: September 12-November 2 \nArtist Shannon Bender has enjoyed creating from a young age. The journey for this series started last year. She wanted to create a theme that Upper Valley residents could relate to. Being in an area with so many that take part in bird watching with a variation of birds\, she thought\, “What a joy for people to see some of the many species that we have here in a painting series.” \nIn addition\, the exhibition displays the different characteristics of each bird. Each original piece takes anywhere between 17-65 hours of strategic feather painting and many layers of acrylic which bring the painting to its final resting state. \n(Collage of paintings from the exhibit\, by Shannon Bender.)\nBio: Shannon is an alumnus of Canaan Elementary School and Mascoma HighSchool. She studied Fine Arts at Lassell College in Massachusetts for a time. \nIn the Mascoma District\, she worked as a Special Paraeducator for 10 years. She is now a certified Special Paraeducator at the Hanover Street School in Lebanon\, New Hampshire. \nShe is a local artist\, residing in Enfield\, NH. SUMMARY:Transit to Trails Visits the Massabesic Center
DESCRIPTION:Click to enlarge for more details.\nTransit to Trails is a seasonal program providing public transportation from the heart of Manchester to walking and hiking trails at nearby state parks and wildlife sanctuaries. Join us for the last date of the 2024 season on September 21 at the Massabesic Center. \nFor the price of a $5 Excursion Pass\, you’ll meet other nature-lovers at the bus stop at Veteran’s Memorial Park\, located at 723 Elm St\, Manchester\, NH 03101\, for pickup times at 10am\, 12pm\, or 2pm. The bus will travel for about 15 minutes to the Massabesic Center\, where you can enjoy hiking trails\, gardens\, and an indoor nature exhibit space featuring live turtles and snakes. We’ll also be showcasing a local art exhibit featuring works from the Manchester Artists Association. Bathroom facilities will be available along with drinking water fountains. Buses will depart from Massabesic back to Veteran’s Park at 11am\, 1pm\, and 3pm. \n$5 Excursion Passes will be sold ONLY at Veteran’s Park on the day of the event\, beginning at 9:30am. Cash or credit accepted. \nThe Massabesic Center is wheelchair accessible. For special accommodation needs\, please contact Massabesic Center Director\, Kimmie Whiteman. \nThis program is possible thanks to a partnership between The Nature Conservancy\, Manchester Transit Authority\, NH State Parks\, NH Audubon and Manchester Parks Recreation and Cemeteries.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intimate guided tour of the gardens at the Massabesic Center in Auburn. UNH Extension Master Gardener Maureen Sinclair will lead you on a fun ramble of the grounds\, and dig into the history\, upkeep\, and future of each of our unique garden spaces. \nYou’ll learn about NH Audubon’s partnership with the University of New Hampshire Extension’s Master Gardener Program to create Demonstration Gardens that provide a place for sharing best practices in eco-friendly home and community gardening\, for human health and well-being and wildlife habitat. These gardens include spaces for pollinators\, birds\, butterflies\, veggies\, rainwater\, and an ornamental space that serves as the backdrop for wedding ceremonies. \nYou’ll also learn about our community partnership with the Massabesic Garden Club and their efforts to rehabilitate the space lovingly called the Barn Garden. \nLast but not least\, discover our plan for expanding the Garden for the Senses\, and take a peaceful pause in the Cathy Small Memorial Garden. \nYou’ll leave with an appreciation for the hard work that goes into our spaces by the team of over 40 volunteers who maintain our grounds. We’ll provide information for upcoming educational workshops and ways you can get involved with volunteering in our gardens. \nDress for walking in short grass on flat but uneven terrain. SUMMARY:Birding Outing at Chase Wildlife Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a birding outing along the trails at the Samuel Myron Chase Wildlife Sanctuary in Hopkinton\, NH. \nThis is an informal birding outing that begins at the Chase Trailhead on Jewett Road in Hopkinton and explores trails with Slater Roosa. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nThe Chase Sanctuary is an excellent habitat for any birds who prefer marshes\, riparian zones\, or rivers. We can expect to see birds such as Red-Winged Blackbirds\, Great Blue Herons\, Eastern Kingbirds\, and a variety of warblers and woodpeckers. \nThis is a free event. Binocular rental is provided. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly flat\, but uneven trails through grassy and wooded terrain. Trails may be soggy or muddy in the rainy season. Dogs are not allowed on this walk.

The journey for this series started last year. She wanted to create a theme that Upper Valley residents could relate to. Being in an area with so many that take part in bird watching with a variation of birds\, she thought\, “What a joy for people to see some of the many species that we have here in a painting series.” \nIn addition\, the exhibition displays the different characteristics of each bird. Each original piece takes anywhere between 17-65 hours of strategic feather painting and many layers of acrylic which bring the painting to its final resting state. \n(Collage of paintings from the exhibit\, by Shannon Bender.)\nBio: Shannon is an alumnus of Canaan Elementary School and Mascoma HighSchool. SUMMARY:Hawk Watch at Pack Monadnock
DESCRIPTION:Join Phil Brown\, the Harris Center’s Bird Conservation Director\, for a half day of hawk watching at the Pack Monadnock Raptor Observatory in Peterborough. We will hope for a good migration flight which\, in mid-September\, can include several species of hawks and falcons as well as flocks of migrant Canada Geese\, songbirds\, and even scoters! \nLearn hawk watching ID tips from the experts and learn about the different migration strategies and behaviors of up to 15 migratory raptor species. During a visit to the hawk watch\, you’ll experience NH’s birding culture and immerse yourself in a long-standing community science project that is a partnership between the Harris Center and NH parks. SUMMARY:Birding Outing at the McLane Center
DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a birding outing along the trails at the McLane Center in Concord\, NH. We will meet in the parking lot in front of the main building. \nThis is an informal birding outing that begins at the McLane parking lot and explores the trails with local birder and NH Audubon volunteer (and former wildlife biologist)\, Mark Suomala. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nMcLane provides various types of bird habitats\, including forest\, grassland\, and edge habitats. We can expect to see birds such as mourning doves\, eastern phoebes\, and gray catbirds\, as well as several woodpecker species and the potential of raptors such as red-tailed hawks. \nThis is a free event. Binocular rental is provided. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly flat\, but uneven trails through grassy and wooded terrain. Trails may be soggy or muddy in the rainy season. Dogs are not allowed on this walk.
