SUMMARY:Build-a-Birdhouse
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the return of our nesting bird species at the Massabesic Center and Wildlife Sanctuary by joining us for a fun-filled experience crafting your very own birdhouse! \nGet hands on with power drills and rough pine boards in a safe family-friendly environment. Learn basic carpentry skills as you assemble pre-cut and pre-drilled kits suitable for a variety of species\, including Eastern Bluebirds\, Tree Swallows\, Black-capped Chickadees\, and House Wrens. \nYou’ll learn how to attract these species to your backyard and how to promote successful nesting. We’ll teach you how to build and install the boxes\, how to protect against predators and pests\, and how to provide the best habitat for your preferred bird species. We’ll also provide resources\, including up-close nest examples\, to help you identify the birds that take up residence in your new birdhouse. \nThis hands-on activity will take place primarily indoors in our historic Broad Barn\, located a few steps down the trail from the Massabesic Center’s main entrance. Sign in and receive your kit at the registration table at the main entrance. We’ll direct you to the activity based on your timeslot registration. \nDress for the weather\, as the barn is not temperature controlled. Accommodations for persons with limited mobility\, sensory concerns\, or other accessibility needs can be provided if you contact Massabesic Center Director Kimmie Whiteman. The barn entrance has two steps that limit wheelchair access into the main space\, but modified workstations can be provided upon request (please provide one week’s notice). \nThere are 60 birdhouse kits available this year. Limit 1 birdhouse per family or residence. Walk-ins will be permitted as space allows\, with birdhouses available only if supplies last. \nTime slots for building experiences have been created to help manage construction station space limitations. Please select a timeslot below for your group’s birdhouse construction experience. Each family or residence should RSVP for only 1 ticket. RSVP Required by April 9\, 2026. \nShort\, informal bird hikes will take place throughout the afternoon\, if the weather allows. As interested groups form\, Volunteer Joe Mahoney will lead 20-minute walks on the All Persons Trail in hopes of seeing Eastern Bluebirds and early migrants newly arrived from their spring migration display courtship and nesting behavior in the Massabesic Center’s hayfield and gardens. You’ll witness the sanctuary’s network of over 80 nest boxes in action! By attending this event\, you and anyone you register on behalf of agree to NH Audubon’s Outdoor Education Program Liability Release & Agreement Waiver. \nThe Nature Lab\, Nature Shop\, Art Exhibit\, gardens and trails will be open to all visitors throughout the event! Explore the center and sanctuary before or after you build your birdhouse or walk with Joe. Bathrooms and drinking fountains are available. For visitors interested in a more in-depth presentation about nesting birds and the NestWatch participatory science project\, consider also signing up for the (adult-oriented) NestWatch Volunteer Training workshop in the morning. \nParking is available in the dirt lot directly in front of the center. The images are all initially sketched by hand and then transferred onto linoleum blocks. They are then carved with a blade. For printing\, the blocks are rolled with ink\, and paper is pressed onto them with a barren and body weight. When pulled up\, the paper includes a reverse image of the block. All prints have natural variances in tone due to human touch\, which is what makes them special. \n \nArt exhibit viewing access may be restricted during private event rentals. Calling ahead to confirm is recommended. \nBio: Bethany is a public school teacher and linocut printmaker living in Concord. Her prints feature a whimsical array of plants and animals native to New Hampshire. In addition to printing on paper\, she upcycles thrifted clothing with hand-printed patches and scrap quilted appliqué pieces. Her studio is in her basement\, where her two cats like to assist in the creative process.

DESCRIPTION:Returning North with the Spring: Retracing the Journey of Naturalist Edwin Way Teale\n\nIn 1947\, Edwin Way Teale\, the most popular naturalist in the decade between Aldo Leopold and Rachel Carson\, followed the progress of spring over four months from the Everglades to the summit of Mount Washington. His best-selling book\, North with the Spring\, recounts the epic journey he and his wife Nellie undertook.\n\nIn 2012\, John Harris set out to retrace Teale’s route\, stopping at unfamiliar wild places on the same calendar date on which Teale visited. Using Teale’s journal notes and photographs\, Harris examined and compared changes in the flora\, fauna\, and lives of the people along the way. His account documents the losses\, details the transformations\, and celebrates the victories\, for a remarkable number of east coast refuges have grown wilder during the intervening years.\n\nJohn R. Harris is currently an adjunct faculty member in Environmental Science at Franklin Pierce University. He holds a Ph.D. in British and American literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, and has taught courses in nature writing\, environmental literacy\, regional history\, American literature\, and composition at Franklin Pierce University. In addition\, he has organized and helped to edit two regional anthologies\, Where the Mountain Stands Alone and Beyond the Notches: Stories of North Country New Hampshire.

We’ll walk from Newmarket to Newfields on this beautifully diverse trail. From forest\, to wetland\, to well-managed successional habitat\, there’s a vast range of species to be found. Tree Swallows\, Belted Kingfishers\, herons\, warblers\, birds of prey\, and many more! DESCRIPTION:Spiders may look scary\, but they play an important role in the ecosystem. Plus they’re really good at building their own unique homes!  \nJoin New Hampshire Audubon at the John Brockway Nature Preserve in Hopkinton to explore nature with your 3-5 year old! Programs will begin at 10 a.m. and last about 45 minutes each. This is an outdoor location with no bathroom facilities. Please dress children for the weather and be ready to walk on the trail\, sit on logs and the ground\, and dig in the dirt! \nPrograms will be cancelled if poor weather is predicted during the program; participants will be notified by email or phone of cancellations. \nFor detailed directions to the preserve\, search for Brockway Pond on Google Maps\, or visit here. Please plan to arrive about 5 minutes prior to the program so that sessions can start on time. \nThis program is free\, with a suggested $5 donation to support NH Audubon’s Annual Fund. DESCRIPTION:Join UNH Extension Master Gardener Maureen Sinclair to learn how to start growing vegetables without getting overwhelmed. What are the “easy” vegetables to grow? How do you pick healthy plants from the garden center? What should we be observing in our gardens? All these questions and many more will be answered to help you maximize early successes\, learn by doing\, and have fun growing vegetables. \nLogistics: \nThis presentation will take place both indoors and outdoors at the Massabesic Center. We’ll start with a lecture in the main conference room and then head out to the garden\, weather-permitting\, to observe vegetable garden practices in action. The small partially fenced vegetable garden at Massabesic produces 400-500 pounds of food every year\, despite sharing some of our crops with the local wildlife. \nDress for the weather for the short\, easy walk from the dirt parking lot to the building\, and from the building to the gardens. The trail through the gardens is flat packed gravel\, suitable for most mobility devices including walkers and wheelchairs. Muddy conditions may be present\, especially if you choose to walk into the grassy areas surrounding some garden spaces. An email will be sent out the day before the program with weather expectations. \nThis program is intended for adults. Children are welcome\, however in the event of disruptions\, we ask that children are accompanied by a guardian to enjoy the Nature Lab or gardens until the presentation concludes. DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, join NH Audubon and The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire’s Forests for a birding outing at the Merrimack River Outdoor Education & Conservation Area (a.k.a. “The Floodplain”) in Concord! Emily Peters\, NH Audubon’s School Programs Coordinator\, will talk about spotting and identifying birds in a variety of NH forest habitats\, while Matt Scaccia\, the Forest Society’s Recreation & Community Relations Manager\, will talk about the unique land features of The Floodplain. Birds spotted in this area in mid-April include Hooded Mergansers\, Great Blue Herons\, and a variety of woodpeckers. \nWe will meet in the parking lot of The Floodplain to begin the walk. This location is just down the road from the Forest Society’s headquarters on Portsmouth Street in Concord\, and can be found on Google Maps by searching “Les Clark Nature Trailhead”. \nThis is a free event with binocular rentals available. Please dress for the weather with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly flat\, but uneven trails through grassy and wooded terrain. DESCRIPTION:Bob Hull Memorial Bluebird Walk – Saturday\, April 25th 8:00 am \nHelp trip leader David Blezard clean out bluebird boxes\, look for early migrants and lingering winter birds\, and get yourself in the mood for spring. \nEach year\, volunteers join together on a field trip to repair and maintain Bluebird boxes throughout Durham in honor of Bob Hull and his wife Sheila. Bob maintained\, replaced\, and installed countless Bluebird boxes in Durham. Each year we honor these two beloved members of the Seacoast chapter by carrying on their work in maintaining and repairing these boxes. \nDuring our annual trip we visit many locations where Bob originally installed boxes. We replace those in need of replacing\, fix what we can\, and clean out the boxes. We also search for early spring migrants. Birds we frequently see on the trip include Eastern Bluebird\, Brown Creeper\, Pileated Woodpecker\, Fox Sparrow\, Wilson’s Snipe\, American Kestrel\, Killdeer\, and much\, much more! \nIt can also be interesting to dissect the nests of bluebirds and the other birds that use these nest boxes. The trip provides great opportunities to connect with chapter members and is a favorite of many! \nMeet at the Mill Rd Plaza in Durham at 8:00. DESCRIPTION:Party Animals by Bethany Clarke \nThis exhibit runs at the McLane Center in Concord from March 11-May 2\, 2026. \nDescription: Handprinted linocuts featuring an array of native New Hampshire plants and animals. The images are all initially sketched by hand and then transferred onto linoleum blocks. They are then carved with a blade. For printing\, the blocks are rolled with ink\, and paper is pressed onto them with a barren and body weight. When pulled up\, the paper includes a reverse image of the block. All prints have natural variances in tone due to human touch\, which is what makes them special. \n \nArt exhibit viewing access may be restricted during private event rentals. Calling ahead to confirm is recommended. \nBio: Bethany is a public school teacher and linocut printmaker living in Concord. Her prints feature a whimsical array of plants and animals native to New Hampshire. In addition to printing on paper\, she upcycles thrifted clothing with hand-printed patches and scrap quilted appliqué pieces. Her studio is in her basement\, where her two cats like to assist in the creative process.
