DESCRIPTION:PART 1 HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO ZOOM \nJoin Richard Hodges from ReTreeUs for a two-part workshop to discover a novel way to grow schoolyard gardens. In these workshops\, we’ll talk about sheet mulching techniques\, succession planting\, and building organic matter with an easy-to-do method. You’ll also learn the basic considerations and steps for planning and starting a schoolyard vegetable garden. \nIn Part 1 of the workshop\, we’ll get hands-on (virtually) with the “sheet mulching” practice we utilize in school gardens in the spring to prevent weeds and build soil. DESCRIPTION:UNH Extension Master Gardeners will be working in the soil to maintain our luscious gardens which include pollinator and bird-friendly plants\, a rain garden space\, vegetable gardens\, raised beds\, and more. Ask all of your pressing questions about your plants at home\, or find out how to get involved in gardening with NH Audubon and UNH Extension. \nAs an on-going partnership between New Hampshire Audubon and University of New Hampshire Extension’s Master Gardener Program\, the Demonstration Gardens provide a place for sharing best practices in eco-friendly home and community gardening\, which enhance human health and well-being and wildlife habitat.  \nDress for walking in the grass on flat but uneven terrain. Protect yourself against insects and the sun with long pants\, sleeves\, sunscreen\, and insect repellant. Gardeners will not be on site during inclement weather. \nBuilding hours are 11am to 5pm on Thursdays\, so plan accordingly. Visit the bathrooms\, gift shop\, and meet our animal ambassadors after you explore the gardens. DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a birding walk along the trails at Massabesic Center in Auburn. \nThis is an informal birding walk that begins at the Center and explores the trails with local birder\, Joe Mahoney. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nBinocular rental included with ticket. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly flat\, but uneven trails through grassy and wooded terrain. SUMMARY:Tips for Growing Tomatoes: Trellising\, Pruning and More
DESCRIPTION:Fresh tomatoes from the garden are the BEST\, but growing them can present some challenges. In this workshop\, we’ll explore some ways to overcome challenges of disease and pests and support the plants for better production. We’ll discuss and demonstrate different support methods: staking\, caging\, overhead trellising\, and the “Florida Weave.” We’ll show how to prune tomatoes to control growth and improve disease prevention and more. \nThe workshop will take place primarily outdoors. DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a birding walk along the trails at Massabesic Center in Auburn. \nThis is an informal birding walk that begins at the Center and explores the trails with local birder\, Joe Mahoney. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nBinocular rental included with ticket. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly flat\, but uneven trails through grassy and wooded terrain. SUMMARY:Identification and Role of Native and Non-native Shrubs as Habitat for Birds
DESCRIPTION:Each program will be limited to 15 participants with no repeat registrants. This event will be held entirely outdoors and will be held as long as it is not raining. Participants should bring their binoculars and clothing appropriate for the weather conditions at the time of the event (see Pickering Ponds beginner bird walk for directions). \nWednesday\, June 14\, 5:30-8 pm & \nFriday\, June 16\, 7:30-10 am \nat Pickering Ponds trails\, Rochester \nThis program\, by Matt Tarr of UNH Cooperative Extension\, will teach you how to identify the most common native and non-native shrubs that comprise many bird habitats in NH. We will identify each shrub species\, discuss how each species functions as bird habitat\, and which shrubs you want to encourage on your land to benefit birds. SUMMARY:NH Butterfly Monitoring Trainings - June 15
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we continue to explore NH’s Butterflies through field trainings. \nNew Hampshire Audubon is partnering with New Hampshire Fish and Game (NHFG) to collect long-term data on butterflies in the Concord region and beyond. Sightings will provide valuable data on how species ranges are changing over time. Your data will help support butterfly conservation across the state. \nNHFG and partners will go in the field to learn more about the butterflies that call New Hampshire home. Our series of online training sessions wrapped up and now we will spend time in the field learning how to identify the butterflies in a diversity of habitats. All are welcome for this amazing opportunity to learn and participate in butterfly conservation. Field training sessions in and around Concord are scheduled for the following dates: \nJune 15 from 11am – 1pm \nMeet at McLane Center in Concord \nJoin Mike Thomas\, retired entomologist and extraordinary butterfly enthusiast as we explore the habitat in and around the Concord Pine Barrens. \nDuring the field trainings you will receive additional information about the Butterfly Surveys that will take place at 6 locations across the state. The field sessions will provide you with an eye-opening experience to connect with species you may not have noticed in the past. No matter what your skill level is\, you are welcome to join us. Together we can help track New Hampshire’s butterflies and make a difference in their conservation. \nField training sessions in and around Concord are scheduled for the following dates: May 18\, June 3\, and June 15. SUMMARY:Identification and Role of Native and Non-native Shrubs as Habitat for Birds
DESCRIPTION:Each program will be limited to 15 participants with no repeat registrants. This event will be held entirely outdoors and will be held as long as it is not raining. Participants should bring their binoculars and clothing appropriate for the weather conditions at the time of the event (see Pickering Ponds beginner bird walk for directions). \nWednesday\, June 14\, 5:30-8 pm & \nFriday\, June 16\, 7:30-10 am \nat Pickering Ponds trails\, Rochester \nThis program\, by Matt Tarr of UNH Cooperative Extension\, will teach you how to identify the most common native and non-native shrubs that comprise many bird habitats in NH. We will identify each shrub species\, discuss how each species functions as bird habitat\, and which shrubs you want to encourage on your land to benefit birds. DESCRIPTION:Kate Osgood’s photography documents A Garden Story – The pollinator garden at the McLane Center\, taking us through the life cycle of the garden\, from buds to birds and all of the changes\, and visitors\, in between. \nThere will be an artists reception on April 11\, from 4-6pm. \nA volunteer at the McLane pollinator garden\, Kate loves to document its beauty and changes through her photography. A lifelong lover of nature\, she has shown this love through her work as a landscape architect and through her photography. She studied botany at UNH and landscape architecture at UCLA and is licensed in both CA and NH.
