SUMMARY:Wildlife Friendly Gardening
DESCRIPTION:(Rescheduled from original February 21 date.) \nJoin NH Audubon Senior Biologist Diane DeLuca as she guides us through the steps for creating a wildlife friendly sanctuary in our own backyards. We’ll learn about the needs of pollinators\, birds\, and other animals that you can attract to your yard\, and why it’s so important to support wildlife with natural habitat. We’ll discuss maximizing year round sources for food and shelter using native plants\, water sources\, and other features. We’ll talk about threats facing our local wildlife\, including pesticides and habitat loss\, and how we can individually make a big\, lasting impact on protecting these species long term. You’ll reap the rewards as you enjoy wildlife watching from your own window for years to come. \nThis in-person presentation will take place entirely indoors at the Massabesic Center\, in the main conference room. Dress for the weather for the short\, easy walk from the dirt parking lot to the building. This program is intended for adults. Children are welcome\, however in the event of disruptions\, we ask that children are accompanied by a guardian to enjoy the Nature Lab or gardens until the presentation concludes. Accommodations for persons with limited mobility\, sensory concerns\, or other accessibility needs can be provided if you contact Massabesic Center Director Kimmie Whiteman in advance. \nCost:\n$10 for NH Audubon members and UNH Ext. DESCRIPTION:The snow is melting and we can see more colors. We’re going to learn what happens when spring comes! \nJoin New Hampshire Audubon at the John Brockway Nature Preserve in Hopkinton to explore nature with your 3-5 year old! Programs will begin at 10 a.m. and last about 45 minutes each. This is an outdoor location with no bathroom facilities. Please dress children for the weather and be ready to walk on the trail\, sit on logs and the ground\, and dig in the dirt! \nPrograms will be cancelled if poor weather is predicted during the program; participants will be notified by email or phone of cancellations. \nFor detailed directions to the preserve\, search for Brockway Pond on Google Maps\, or visit here. Please plan to arrive about 5 minutes prior to the program so that sessions can start on time. \nThis program is free\, with a suggested $5 donation to support NH Audubon’s Annual Fund. Thanks to an endowment from Dorothy Brockway Osborne\, there is no cost for Hopkinton residents. SUMMARY:Birding Outing at the McLane Center
DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a birding outing along the trails at the McLane Center! McLane is home to grassland\, forest\, and freshwater habitats. We will look for migrating birds such as Tree Swallows\, Pine Warblers\, and Wood Ducks. \nThis is an informal birding outing that begins at the center parking lot and explores the trails with local birder and NH Audubon volunteer Joe Mahoney. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nThis is a free event. Binocular rental is provided. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over varied trails with some elevation change through grassy and wooded terrain. Trails may be soggy or muddy in the rainy season. Dogs are not allowed on this walk. \nBy attending this event\, you and anyone you register on behalf of agree to NH Audubon’s Outdoor Education Program Liability Release & Agreement Waiver. SUMMARY:Ecology and Conservation of Grassland Bird program with the Seacoast Chapter
DESCRIPTION:Ecology and Conservation of Grassland Bird – Wednesday\, April 8 \nGrassland birds such as the Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark are declining throughout their ranges. In this talk\, we review the history and ecology of these species\, with a focus on New Hampshire and the Northeast US\, then shift to the conservation challenges they face and some of the things people can do to overcome these threats. \nBio: Pam Hunt has been interested in birds since the tender age of 12\, when an uncle took her to Brigantine National Wildlife Refuge in NJ. She went on to earn a B.S. in biology from Cornell University\, M.A. in zoology from the University of Montana\, and then a Ph.D. from Dartmouth College in 1995. Pam came to NH Audubon in 2000 after five years as adjunct faculty at Colby-Sawyer College in New London\, NH. In her current position as Avian Conservation Biologist\, she works closely with NH Fish and Game to coordinate and prioritize bird research and monitoring in the state\, and also authored NH’s “State of the Birds” report. Specific areas of interest include habitat use by early successional birds (particularly whip-poor-wills)\, conservation of aerial insectivores (e.g.\, swifts and swallows)\, and the effects of events outside the breeding season on long-distance migrants. SUMMARY:NestWatch Volunteer Training: Eastern Bluebird and Tree Swallow Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Learn about and get involved in a participatory science project to monitor field-nesting birds at NH Audubon’s Massabesic Center! \nThis workshop will teach you how to collect conservation data as a NestWatch Monitor. You’ll learn detailed identification skills for bird species and nests most often encountered in the nesting boxes at Massabesic\, including Eastern Bluebirds\, Tree Swallows\, Black-capped Chickadees\, and House Wrens. We’ll review predator and disease control methods\, invasive species mitigation\, and information about nest protections afforded by migratory bird laws. We’ll touch on terminology and general life history information\, and we’ll celebrate the sanctuary’s nesting success with a summary review of this 25-year long project. NH Audubon Massabesic Center is home to almost 80 monitored nest boxes; can you guess how many Tree Swallow fledglings have taken flight at Massabesic over the last twenty years? \nWe will begin in the classroom at 9am for a 2.5-hour presentation\, with a short break for snacks (bring your own snacks or lunch and water). After the break\, we’ll head outside to learn the trails and nest box locations\, clean out residual nest materials from last year\, and practice field identification of early season birds. \nIf you’d like to join our volunteer team after learning what it takes\, we’ll collect your information and start you down the path to becoming a NestWatch Monitor with NH Audubon. Attendees are not required to become volunteers; you can learn the process and take your new skills with you anywhere! Space in the volunteer program is limited\, so we cannot guarantee every attendee a spot in our program. \nThis adult-focused presentation is required for all new NestWatch Monitor volunteers at the Massabesic Center. Minors who wish to become volunteers must be accompanied by trained adults to ensure robust data collection. Established volunteers are welcome to enjoy a refresher but are not required to repeat the training course. \nNestWatch Monitors are expected to contribute one to two hours each week from May to August to record data in their designated zones. \nPresenters: \nBob Krewson\, NH Audubon Bluebird Monitor Volunteer Leader \nKimmie Whiteman\, Massabesic Center Director \nBob Krewson\, along with Logan Young\, were awarded the 2024 John Thalheimer Volunteer Award for their dedication to this project. SUMMARY:Build-a-Birdhouse
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the return of our nesting bird species at the Massabesic Center and Wildlife Sanctuary by joining us for a fun-filled experience crafting your very own birdhouse! \nGet hands on with power drills and rough pine boards in a safe family-friendly environment. Learn basic carpentry skills as you assemble pre-cut and pre-drilled kits suitable for a variety of species\, including Eastern Bluebirds\, Tree Swallows\, Black-capped Chickadees\, and House Wrens. \nYou’ll learn how to attract these species to your backyard and how to promote successful nesting. We’ll teach you how to build and install the boxes\, how to protect against predators and pests\, and how to provide the best habitat for your preferred bird species. We’ll also provide resources\, including up-close nest examples\, to help you identify the birds that take up residence in your new birdhouse. \nThis hands-on activity will take place primarily indoors in our historic Broad Barn\, located a few steps down the trail from the Massabesic Center’s main entrance. Sign in and receive your kit at the registration table at the main entrance. We’ll direct you to the activity based on your timeslot registration. \nDress for the weather\, as the barn is not temperature controlled. Accommodations for persons with limited mobility\, sensory concerns\, or other accessibility needs can be provided if you contact Massabesic Center Director Kimmie Whiteman. The barn entrance has two steps that limit wheelchair access into the main space\, but modified workstations can be provided upon request (please provide one week’s notice). \nThere are 60 birdhouse kits available this year. Limit 1 birdhouse per family or residence. Walk-ins will be permitted as space allows\, with birdhouses available only if supplies last. \nTime slots for building experiences have been created to help manage construction station space limitations. Please select a timeslot below for your group’s birdhouse construction experience. Each family or residence should RSVP for only 1 ticket. RSVP Required by April 9\, 2026. \nShort\, informal bird hikes will take place throughout the afternoon\, if the weather allows. As interested groups form\, Volunteer Joe Mahoney will lead 20-minute walks on the All Persons Trail in hopes of seeing Eastern Bluebirds and early migrants newly arrived from their spring migration display courtship and nesting behavior in the Massabesic Center’s hayfield and gardens. You’ll witness the sanctuary’s network of over 80 nest boxes in action! By attending this event\, you and anyone you register on behalf of agree to NH Audubon’s Outdoor Education Program Liability Release & Agreement Waiver. \nThe Nature Lab\, Nature Shop\, Art Exhibit\, gardens and trails will be open to all visitors throughout the event! Explore the center and sanctuary before or after you build your birdhouse or walk with Joe. Bathrooms and drinking fountains are available. For visitors interested in a more in-depth presentation about nesting birds and the NestWatch participatory science project\, consider also signing up for the (adult-oriented) NestWatch Volunteer Training workshop in the morning. \nParking is available in the dirt lot directly in front of the center. DESCRIPTION:Party Animals by Bethany Clarke \nThis exhibit runs at the McLane Center in Concord from March 11-May 2\, 2026. \nDescription: Handprinted linocuts featuring an array of native New Hampshire plants and animals. The images are all initially sketched by hand and then transferred onto linoleum blocks. They are then carved with a blade. For printing\, the blocks are rolled with ink\, and paper is pressed onto them with a barren and body weight. When pulled up\, the paper includes a reverse image of the block. All prints have natural variances in tone due to human touch\, which is what makes them special. \n \nArt exhibit viewing access may be restricted during private event rentals. Calling ahead to confirm is recommended. \nBio: Bethany is a public school teacher and linocut printmaker living in Concord. Her prints feature a whimsical array of plants and animals native to New Hampshire. In addition to printing on paper\, she upcycles thrifted clothing with hand-printed patches and scrap quilted appliqué pieces. Her studio is in her basement\, where her two cats like to assist in the creative process.
