SUMMARY:Concord NH Butterfly Survey 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our first annual NH Butterfly Survey! \nNew Hampshire Audubon is partnering with New Hampshire Fish and Game (NHFG) to collect long-term data on butterflies in the Concord region and beyond. Sightings will provide valuable data on how species ranges are changing over time. Your data will help support butterfly conservation across the state. \nNHFG and partners will go in the field to learn more about the butterflies that call New Hampshire home. Our series of online and field training sessions wrapped up and it’s time for the butterfly survey. All are welcome for this amazing opportunity to learn and participate in butterfly conservation. \nJoin us as we conduct the first annual Concord NH Butterfly Survey. These surveys are part of a nationwide effort to track butterflies through the North American Butterfly Association. These surveys provide insight into how habitat and weather changes affect butterfly populations. Together we can help track New Hampshire’s butterflies and make a difference in their conservation. \nMeet at McLane Center in Concord. \nQuestions? Please contact Diane De Luca.

SUMMARY:Garden Insects - Environmentally Conscious Pest Management
DESCRIPTION:As a gardener committed to sustainable practices\, it can be difficult knowing which insects are beneficial to your garden and which are harmful\, let alone the best way to help your plants survive the onslaught.  To learn the most environmentally-conscious\, and effective\, ways of gardening with insects\, join us for an introduction to our six-legged friends and foes.  During this in-person workshop\, we’ll discuss the basics of insect taxonomy and anatomy\, the factors behind what makes a bug good or bad\, identification tips\, and a review of common species that you’re likely to encounter here in New Hampshire.  We’ll also discuss integrated pest management concepts\, with a focus on non-chemical practices\, to help lessen the impacts of pests you may encounter at home. \nThis presentation will include a 45-minute indoor lecture\, followed by a 45-minute excursion to the gardens to look for insects and their signs in the Demonstration Gardens. In the event of inclement weather\, the entire presentation will take place indoors. \nCome prepared for a short walk over flat\, uneven grassy terrain.  Sunscreen and bug-repellant (for the humans!) are recommended. \nFor accessibility accommodations\, please contact Massabesic Center Director\, Kimmie Whiteman\, at kwhiteman@nhaudubon.org. \nPresenter:\nKimmie Whiteman\, NH Audubon Massabesic Center Director \nCost:\n$10 for NH Audubon members and UNH-Extension Master Gardeners$15 for non-members (Join or renew your membership today! Not sure of your membership status? Email our member services department or call (603) 224-9909 x310.) \nREGISTER HERE \nRegistration Required by July 25\, 2023 \nThis program is brought to you through an ongoing partnership between New Hampshire Audubon and University of New Hampshire Extension’s Master Gardener Program. The Demonstration Gardens at NH Audubon’s Massabesic Center provide a place for sharing best practices in eco-friendly home and community gardening\, to benefit human health and well-being\, and wildlife habitat. \n

SUMMARY:Local History as Told Through the Story of Ash Cottage
DESCRIPTION:2023 Red Barn Series\, Newfound Audubon\nNo registration necessary – just come and join us! \nSpeaker: Mae Williams\, Historic Preservationist \n“I will relate the story of Ash Cottage through my own journey of discovery\, and place the farmhouse in the larger context of the history of Hebron and surrounding area. The talk will explore my own experiences researching the history of the property (and the families that lived within its walls)\, and deciphering the clues within the structure and what they can tell us about the physical evolution of the farmhouse from a very simple and quite early two-room farmhouse\, to a turn of the 20th century summer home\, and to the current rehabilitation project by NH Audubon.” \nPlease park across the street at Ash Cottage. Download a map here. Note that this is now a private residence and there is no bathroom access. \nSpecial thanks to our 2023 Red Barn Series sponsors\, John S. Jordan Design PLLC\, the Hebron Conservation Commission; and to our co-host\, the Newfound Lake Region Association.

SUMMARY:A Garden Story Photography Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Kate Osgood’s photography documents A Garden Story – The pollinator garden at the McLane Center\, taking us through the life cycle of the garden\, from buds to birds and all of the changes\, and visitors\, in between. \nThere will be an artists reception on April 11\, from 4-6pm. \nA volunteer at the McLane pollinator garden\, Kate loves to document its beauty and changes through her photography. A lifelong lover of nature\, she has shown this love through her work as a landscape architect and through her photography. She studied botany at UNH and landscape architecture at UCLA and is licensed in both CA and NH. Having a keen interest in using native plants in the built environment\, volunteering at the pollinator garden is a perfect fit both to get away from the computer and to experience the life cycles of the plants first hand. \n“I have long been an admirer of the pollinator garden program of the NH Audubon Society and hopefully this photography collection will inspire folks to explore this program and create a garden at their own homes.” \nFor more of Kate Osgood’s photography\, please see her Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/kateosgooddesigns/

SUMMARY:Digging into Native New Hampshire
DESCRIPTION:2023 Red Barn Series\, Newfound Audubon\nNo registration necessary – just come and join us! \nSpeaker: Dr. Robert Goodby\, Professor of Anthropology\, Franklin Pierce University \nAbenaki history has been reduced to near-invisibility as a result of conquest\, a conquering culture that placed little value on the Indian experience\, and a strategy of self-preservation that required many Abenaki to go “underground\,” concealing their true identities for generations to avoid discrimination and persecution. Robert Goodby reveals archaeological evidence that shows their deep presence here\, inches below the earth’s surface. \nThis event is made possible by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities. \nPlease park across the street at Ash Cottage.
