SUMMARY:Isles of Shoals\, Birding Trip 2
DESCRIPTION:Trip 2: August 31-September 3 (3 nights) \nExperience the magic of the Isles of Shoals in early fall. Spending nights on Appledore Island will give us the opportunity to explore the diversity of the islands. Over 200 species of songbirds\, seabirds\, and waterfowl occur on Appledore as migrants – making it a perfect spot to observe fall movements. \nThe Appledore Island Migration Banding Station will be in operation and we will have the chance to observe songbird migrants up close. Neighboring White and Seavey Islands are home to a thriving Common\, Roseate\, and Arctic tern colony after restoration efforts were initiated by NH Audubon in 1997. Most of the terns will have started their southern journey\, but we will take a boat tour of the islands\, hear project details\, and land if possible. \nIn addition to all the spectacular birding that the islands have to offer\, we will take time to explore other aspects of Appledore\, Shoals Marine Laboratory\, and Celia Thaxter’s garden. Activities may include exploring the intertidal\, an island history walk\, or learning about SML’s innovative research programs focused on understanding and sustaining the marine environment. \nRegistration and details here.

SUMMARY:Professional Development - Back to School Gardening\, Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Join Richard Hodges from ReTreeUs for the last of a two-part workshop to discover a novel way to grow schoolyard gardens. In these workshops\, we’ll talk about sheet mulching techniques\, succession planting\, and building organic matter with an easy-to-do method. You’ll also learn the basic considerations and steps for planning and starting a schoolyard vegetable garden. UNH-Extension Master Gardeners will be on site to talk specifics about pollinator gardens\, as well. \nIn this session\, we will harvest the crops that were planted in the “Back to School Garden” that we established in the spring session. We’ll transplant lettuce\, spinach and kale seedlings for the fall. We will install row cover\, with mini hoops\, to extend the growing season and we’ll discuss various approaches to fall gardens. \nAfter the workshop\, we’ll see these methods and more in action while touring the successful Teaching and Demonstration Garden\, which is maintained through a partnership between NH Audubon and UNH-Extension\, and provides the public with research-based\, sustainable gardening information and skills that benefit our environment for wildlife and for people. \nThis program will take place outdoors rain or shine. In the event of severe thunderstorms\, we will postpone.  Dress for a short walk in grassy uneven terrain\, with the intention to get hands-on with soil and plants. Please bring gloves; we will have some available on site if you need to borrow a pair. \nCost: $10 for NH Audubon members $15 for non-members (Join or renew your membership today! Not sure of your membership status? Email our member services department or call (603) 224-9909 x310.)  \nAdvance registration required for Part 2 by August 27th. \nAll ticket purchases will generate a printable ticket with a QR code. SUMMARY:The Iconic Common Loon
DESCRIPTION:2023 Red Barn Series\, Newfound Audubon\nNo registration necessary – just come and join us! \nSpeaker: Caroline Hughes\, Loon Preservation Committee \nFor many\, the haunting call of the loon is an important part of the New Hampshire lake experience. Often seen as a symbol of the northern wilderness\, loons are a beloved fixture on New Hampshire lakes\, and many lake goers enjoy watching them as they raise their young. However\, the breeding season can be a vulnerable time for loons—they face many threats\, both natural and human-caused\, while on our lakes. This presentation by Caroline Hughes of the Loon Preservation Committee (LPC) will focus on the biology and life history of loons\, the threats that loons face\, and the work that the LPC and their volunteers have performed since 1975 to help recover New Hampshire’s threatened loon population. \nCaroline Hughes has a Bachelor’s in Environmental Science from the College of the Holy Cross. After interning and working for a number of conservation organizations\, including the Squam Lakes Association and Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation\, she joined the Loon Preservation Committee where she is now the Volunteer & Outreach Biologist. \nPlease park across the street at Ash Cottage. Download a map here. Note that this is now a private residence and there is no bathroom access. \nSpecial thanks to our 2023 Red Barn Series sponsors\, John S. Jordan Design PLLC\, the Hebron Conservation Commission; and to our co-host\, the Newfound Lake Region Association.
