SUMMARY:Painting the Natural Landscape Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Nature is all around us and artist Diane Crespo is drawn to capturing the essence of the landscape in her vivid oil paintings. From the mountains to the sea\, all across New England\, nature’s beauty is\never-changing and beckons to be painted. Certain elements such as water can bring about a feeling of calm in the ebb and flow of tidal marshes\, while the sky and light help to describe form and design that is\, in itself simple and complex. The changing seasons offer an abundance of opportunity to view the dappling of shadows across a field of green or the cool shadows laden on a winter’s snow. In ‘Painting the Natural Landscape’ you will discover scenes across New England through the eyes of the artist. \nBio: Diane Crespo is an academically trained landscape painter living in Southeast New Hampshire. She earned her BFA from New Hampshire Institute of Art in 2011. Prior to pursuing a fine art degree\, Diane painted only with pastels\, taking classes with a local pastel teacher. Diane paints primarily in oils and pastels\, and commonly paints over acrylic under-paintings or tonal under-paintings with oil paint. When her schedule allows\, Diane will start a painting outdoors and finish it in the studio or she will use it as a study for a future studio painting. \nLiving in New England\, there is endless inspiration for Diane’s paintings. As a nature lover\, Diane sees beauty from the coast to the mountains while she’s either walking the beach or hiking in the White Mountains. Diane’s paintings are in private collections worldwide\, many of which have been commissioned landscapes as well as pet portraits. Painting animals in pastel is also one of Diane’s passions. “Pastels are the perfect medium to achieve the softness of the fur.”Her paintings can be viewed in person by appointment or by chance at Diane Crespo Fine Art\, located at 27 Front Street\, Exeter\, New Hampshire\, or at many yearly shows she participates in. \n“My landscapes take viewers to many places\, some are familiar\, some are dreamlike….”\n~Diane Crespo

SUMMARY:Wildlife of New Hampshire Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:From the majestic White Mountains of the North\, to the rocky shores of the New Hampshire coast\, and even simply in his own backyard\, Cameron has searched far and wide to document the different species that inhabit the Granite State. From incredibly rare vagrant birds\, to the most common species you’d see walking down the street\, these photographs hope to show off the breadth of ecological diversity close to home. Each photo comes with a story: some are harrowing trips that took weeks to plan\, others just involve pure\, dumb luck\, but each encounter created an unforgettable moment. \nExamples of Cameron’s work.\nBio: Cameron is a wildlife photographer and a resident of Dover\, New Hampshire. He got his start in photography as a concert photographer and a photojournalist and developed a passion for birding during the summer of 2021. He now spends his free time helping run the New Hampshire Rare Bird Alert Groupme\, volunteering with New Hampshire Audubon and the Harris Center\, and photographing as much wildlife as possible.

SUMMARY:Intro to New Hampshire Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:Join Mark Ellingwood\, wildlife biologist and volunteer with the Harris Center for Conservation Education\, for a training on New Hampshire’s butterflies. Participants will be introduced to the recently established New Hampshire Butterfly Network and basic information on butterfly biology and behavior. In addition\, participants will receive practical advice on how to identify and photograph butterflies for personal enjoyment and/or for inclusion in New Hampshire’s rapidly growing database of butterfly distribution and relative abundance. Register for Intro to New Hampshire Butterflies here. \nThis training is part of a series of five webinars hosted by the NH Butterfly Monitoring Network\, a collaborative effort led by NH Fish & Game Department to engage volunteers in counting and identifying butterflies across New Hampshire. The series will provide information on butterflies in New Hampshire\, butterfly biology and identification\, and how to get involved with the NH Butterfly Monitoring Network. For more information and to register for the session(s) you want to attend (you don’t need to attend them all!)\, visit nhbutterflies.org. \n\nAll butterfly enthusiasts are welcome\, with or without prior experience!

SUMMARY:Zoom Program: Radar Ornithology: Tracking Migration Under the Cover of Darkness
DESCRIPTION:Earth’s lower atmosphere is a critical ecological habitat. Trillions of organisms live\, forage\, and migrate through this medium\, yet rarely is this space considered a primary habitat for ecological or conservation prioritization. For this reason\, it is among the least studied habitats\, though it serves as a global conduit for the transfer of biomass\, weather\, and inorganic materials. Airspaces are increasingly polluted and populated with structures. Fundamental research is necessary to address core questions of population and community ecology. Presenter Dr. Kyle Horton’s seminar will overview advances from the Colorado State University Aeroecology Lab\, highlighting insights into bird stopover mapping\, migration timing\, and r quantification of the aerial niche. \nBio: Kyle Horton\, Assistant Professor and Principal Investigator at the Aeroecology Lab\, has a B.S. in Biology from Canisius College\, an M.S. in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Delaware\, and a PhD. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Oklahoma. In his free time\, he likes birding\, photography\, listening to podcasts\, watching Marvel and Star Wars series\, and relaxing with family.

SUMMARY:Simply Nature Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:‘Simply Nature’ is an exhibit of a relatively small portion of Pierre Garand’s catalog of Nature photographs. For nearly sixty years\, Pierre’s primary photographic subject has been Nature. He considers Her to be the artist\, and he a mere agent\, exploring\, discovering\, recording and presenting Her masterworks. This exhibit comprises a tiny taste of Nature’s diversity\, beauty\, and even a little whimsy: Her landscapes\, flora\, fauna and the elements that support them. In most cases\, Pierre brings the viewer as close to the subject as he physically or optically can\, presenting them with a perspective or in a unique moment that the viewer may not otherwise experience. (All but one of these images were captured in New Hampshire at or near Pierre’s home just inland of the New Hampshire Seacoast region. None of the images are AI generated.) \nCelebrate the Simply Nature Exhibit at the reception with Pierre Garand on March 6 from 4-6pm. \nBarred Owl photographed by Pierra Garand.\n  \nBio: Pierre Garand has been making photographs\, drawing with light for nearly sixty years. With occasional diversions\, his primary subject has been the Natural World\, usually as close-up as he physically or optically can get. He considers Mother Nature to be an artist who challenges him to discover\, record and share Her amazing works. With the rising evidence of climate change in recent years\, he’s come to consider his photographs a record\, a visual history of a major transition in Nature. He continues to keep his eyes and ears open to the world around him for the chance to record Nature’s art\, whether already formed or in process – a stone with natural markings that look like a face\, or a pollinator busy feeding on a Goldenrod in full bloom. He takes every opportunity he can to share his photographs with the public\, in the hope of providing a revealing\, inspiring or entertaining glimpse into the Nature all around us. \n  \n30% of the proceeds from this exhibit will benefit New Hampshire Audubon. \n(Art exhibit viewing access may be restricted during private event rentals. Calling ahead to confirm is recommended.)

SUMMARY:Wetland Butterflies of New Hampshire
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that many butterflies have host plant preferences that bring them to certain habitats for most of their life cycle? In this webinar\, we will focus on those species that tend to occupy wetlands. Come learn about those scaled insects that frequent bogs\, marshes\, swamps\, stream sides and other wetlands of New Hampshire. Led by certified wetland scientist Dr. Rick Van de Poll\, this training seminar will cover the life histories of species that can be found in wetland habitats as well as the plants that attract them there. Register for Wetland Butterflies of New Hampshire here.

\n(Art exhibit viewing access may be restricted during private event rentals. Calling ahead to confirm is recommended.)
