SUMMARY:Brockway Wee Explorers - Hide and Seek
DESCRIPTION:Join New Hampshire Audubon at Brockway Nature Preserve in Hopkinton for nature exploration with your 3-5 year old. Programs will be held on the first and third Wednesday of every month through May. Each program has an exciting theme regarding wildlife\, nature\, or the seasons. Programs will begin at 10 am and last about 45 minutes each. \nThis is an outdoor location with no bathroom facilities. Please dress children for the weather and be ready to walk on the trail\, sit on logs and the ground\, and dig in the dirt! Programs will be cancelled if poor weather is predicted during the program time; participants will be notified by email of cancellations. To find the meeting circle\, park at the Brockway Nature Preserve parking area along Farrington Corners Road in Hopkinton\, then follow the entrance trail across the bridge to the circle. For detailed directions\, see here. Contact Devin Guilfoyle with any questions about the program. DESCRIPTION:Since the season at Paradise Point has come to a close\, our Center Coordinator Devin Guilfoyle will be assisting NH Audubon’s education team. As part of this role\, some of Devin’s outdoor education programs will be birding walks at the John Brockway Nature Preserve in Hopkinton and the McLane Center in Concord. (Birding walks at the Brockway Preserve are free to Hopkinton residents through an endowment from Dorothy Brockway Osborne.) Binocular rental is included with registration. Whether you’re a lifelong birder or have never picked up a pair of binoculars\, Devin hopes you join him for a nature walk! \nCost:\n$8 for NH Audubon Members\n$10 for non-members (Join or renew your membership today! SUMMARY:Holiday Wreath Building Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Get festive with our team of wreath-building extraordinaires! Learn how to decorate a natural balsam wreath using materials found in your garden. Our volunteer team will guide you through the steps of decorating a balsam frame and will teach you the ins and outs of gathering materials\, including what holds up and what doesn’t\, as well as how to collect material responsibly and sustainably. We’ll teach you how to trim your materials to size and how to affix your materials into a tasteful arrangement. The knowledge you gain in this workshop can be applied to wreaths for any season! \nYou are welcome to bring your own found materials (no oriental bittersweet or other invasive plant material\, please)\, but it is not required. Everything you need to construct a full\, beautiful wreath made of natural materials will be provided\, and you’ll leave the evening with a masterpiece ready to hang on your door for the holidays. If you would like to decorate your wreath with a bow\, please bring your own ribbon. Bow-tying will be discussed on request at the end of the workshop as time allows. Note\, pre-constructed wreath frames measure 24 inches in diameter – perfect size for your front door! \nThis in-person workshop will take place entirely indoors. DESCRIPTION:Join New Hampshire Audubon at Brockway Nature Preserve in Hopkinton for nature exploration with your 3-5 year old. Programs will be held on the first and third Wednesday of every month through May. Each program has an exciting theme regarding wildlife\, nature\, or the seasons. Programs will begin at 10 am and last about 45 minutes each. \nThis is an outdoor location with no bathroom facilities. Please dress children for the weather and be ready to walk on the trail\, sit on logs and the ground\, and dig in the dirt! Programs will be cancelled if poor weather is predicted during the program time; participants will be notified by email of cancellations. SUMMARY:Monarch Migration: How Radio-tagging Informs Conservation with Diane De Luca
DESCRIPTION:The last generation of monarchs travel south to overwinter in central Mexico. A journey close to 3000 miles. The placement of tiny Nanotags on migrating monarch butterflies is part of the larger Motus Project\, a global migration tracking system that NH Audubon and many partners are expanding in the Northeast. Tracking information helps determine phenology\, travel speeds\, and migration routes of the tagged monarchs. DESCRIPTION:Join the NH Audubon Seacoast Chapter for their November in-person program: “Something Wild” Stories \nNew Hampshire Public Radio’s (NHPR) “Something Wild” has been exploring the intricacies of nature in NH for 25 years! Chris Martin and Dave Anderson have teamed up as the show’s co-hosts for the past 15 years. Together\, in short radio essays\, these two have taken listeners to ‘see’ some of the state’s most interesting birds\, explored many unique Granite State habitats and asked lots of local nature experts how they were first bitten by the nature bug. Join us for a peek behind the recording studio curtain. It’s sure to be an evening filled with several true stories and lots of tall tales! \nChris Martin is a Senior Biologist with NH Audubon. He has coordinated various raptor monitoring and management projects for Audubon for over 33 years\, working with volunteers and with state and federal partners to aid the recovery of Bald Eagles\, Peregrine Falcons\, Northern Harriers and Ospreys. He has also been Audubon’s voice on NHPR’s Something Wild since 2009. Chris started out wanting to be a forester\, but was always distracted by birds and eventually they became the focus of his professional career. \nDave Anderson is Senior Director of Education for the Society for the Protection of NH Forests. He joined the Forest Society in 1990. He is responsible for design\, development and delivery of conservation education programs. He is a well-known naturalist\, guiding field trips on Forest Society properties and teaching about forest ecology\, wildlife habitats and land conservation. Anderson is a co-author of the “Forest Journal” column in the statewide NH Sunday News. He has co-hosted NHPR’s Something Wild since 2008. He knows his birds well\, but knows his trees even better! \nIn person meetings are held at the Seacoast Science Center at Odiorne State Park\, Route 1A\, Rye\, NH. Wheelchair accessible.
