DESCRIPTION:Join the NH Audubon Seacoast Chapter for their September in-person program: Outlawing Extinction: The Fight Over The Endangered Species Act in the 1970s \nFifty years ago\, Congress passed overwhelmingly the most powerful legislation in the world to protect endangered species – and almost instantly many members regretted doing so. In this illustrated lecture\, historian Kurk Dorsey will analyze the origins of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 and the legal battles that defined what the law really has meant. Kurk Dorsey is the chair of the Department of History at the University of New Hampshire\, where he teaches environmental history and tries to save the study of history from extinction. \nIn person meetings are held at the Seacoast Science Center at Odiorne State Park\, Route 1A\, Rye\, NH. Wheelchair accessible. For more information on chapter programs\, please contact: Dan Hubbard. Cancellations will be posted on the Seacoast Chapter website. DESCRIPTION:In the last 50 years\, scientists estimate that North America has lost roughly 3 billion birds\, meaning that there are only three quarters as many birds around as there used to be. New Hampshire Audubon has been tracking bird populations for almost as long\, and in our “State of the Birds” report we present a summary of how birds are doing here in the Granite State. Almost 300 species occur regularly here\, and this report outlines general population trends\, major threats facing birds and their habitats\, and some of the conservation strategies that might help them recover. The bad news is that birds are declining here as well. DESCRIPTION:UNH Extension Master Gardeners will be working in the soil to maintain our luscious gardens which include pollinator and bird-friendly plants\, a rain garden space\, vegetable gardens\, raised beds\, and more. Ask all of your pressing questions about your plants at home\, or find out how to get involved in gardening with NH Audubon and UNH Extension. \nAs an on-going partnership between New Hampshire Audubon and University of New Hampshire Extension’s Master Gardener Program\, the Demonstration Gardens provide a place for sharing best practices in eco-friendly home and community gardening\, which enhance human health and well-being and wildlife habitat.  \nDress for walking in the grass on flat but uneven terrain. Protect yourself against insects and the sun with long pants\, sleeves\, sunscreen\, and insect repellant. Gardeners will not be on site during inclement weather. \nBuilding hours are 11am to 5pm on Thursdays\, so plan accordingly. SUMMARY:Transit to Trails Day at Massabesic Center
DESCRIPTION:Today is Massabesic Center day on the Transit to Trails program! \nTransit to Trails is a seasonal service that will operate on the first Saturday of each month from June through October of this year. Riders can arrive at the Lake Avenue stop at the SNHU Arena Manchester the day of the event\, board the bus and be transported to outdoor spaces within 30 minutes of the heart of the city. \nThe Nature Conservancy in New Hampshire is partnering with the Manchester Transit Authority and others to host Transit to Trails\, a program providing transportation to walking and hiking trails\, state parks and water destinations to Manchester residents. This year Transit to Trails will be available at no cost to riders! \nGuided bird walks start at 11am and 1pm. \nLearn more here. \n\n\n\n\n\nBuses will depart the Manchester Transit Authority Information Center at the Lake Avenue bus stop at the SNHU Arena at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Buses will pick up from the outdoor locations at 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. and return passengers to Veteran’s Park. \nUPDATE: 🚨🚨🚨 BUS STOP CHANGE 🚨🚨🚨 Due to the “Cruisin’ Downtown” event in Manchester on Saturday\, September 2nd\, the Transit to Trails bus will pick up riders on Lake Avenue at the SNHU Arena. SUMMARY:Isles of Shoals\, Birding Trip 2
DESCRIPTION:Trip 2: August 31-September 3 (3 nights) \nExperience the magic of the Isles of Shoals in early fall. Spending nights on Appledore Island will give us the opportunity to explore the diversity of the islands. Over 200 species of songbirds\, seabirds\, and waterfowl occur on Appledore as migrants – making it a perfect spot to observe fall movements. \nThe Appledore Island Migration Banding Station will be in operation and we will have the chance to observe songbird migrants up close. Neighboring White and Seavey Islands are home to a thriving Common\, Roseate\, and Arctic tern colony after restoration efforts were initiated by NH Audubon in 1997. Most of the terns will have started their southern journey\, but we will take a boat tour of the islands\, hear project details\, and land if possible. \nIn addition to all the spectacular birding that the islands have to offer\, we will take time to explore other aspects of Appledore\, Shoals Marine Laboratory\, and Celia Thaxter’s garden. Activities may include exploring the intertidal\, an island history walk\, or learning about SML’s innovative research programs focused on understanding and sustaining the marine environment. \nRegistration and details here.

DESCRIPTION:Join Richard Hodges from ReTreeUs for the last of a two-part workshop to discover a novel way to grow schoolyard gardens. In these workshops\, we’ll talk about sheet mulching techniques\, succession planting\, and building organic matter with an easy-to-do method. You’ll also learn the basic considerations and steps for planning and starting a schoolyard vegetable garden. UNH-Extension Master Gardeners will be on site to talk specifics about pollinator gardens\, as well. \nIn this session\, we will harvest the crops that were planted in the “Back to School Garden” that we established in the spring session. We’ll transplant lettuce\, spinach and kale seedlings for the fall. We will install row cover\, with mini hoops\, to extend the growing season and we’ll discuss various approaches to fall gardens. \nAfter the workshop\, we’ll see these methods and more in action while touring the successful Teaching and Demonstration Garden\, which is maintained through a partnership between NH Audubon and UNH-Extension\, and provides the public with research-based\, sustainable gardening information and skills that benefit our environment for wildlife and for people. \nThis program will take place outdoors rain or shine.
