SUMMARY:Brockway Wee Explorers - Senses in Nature
DESCRIPTION:Join New Hampshire Audubon at Brockway Nature Preserve in Hopkinton for nature exploration with your 3-5 year old. Programs will be held on the first and third Wednesday of every month through May. Each program has an exciting theme regarding wildlife\, nature\, or the seasons. Programs will begin at 10 am and last about 45 minutes each. \nThis is an outdoor location with no bathroom facilities. Please dress children for the weather and be ready to walk on the trail\, sit on logs and the ground\, and dig in the dirt! Programs will be cancelled if poor weather is predicted during the program time; participants will be notified by email of cancellations. To find the meeting circle\, park at the Brockway Nature Preserve parking area along Farrington Corners Road in Hopkinton\, then follow the entrance trail across the bridge to the circle. DESCRIPTION:Since the season at Paradise Point has come to a close\, our Center Coordinator Devin Guilfoyle will be assisting NH Audubon’s education team. As part of this role\, some of Devin’s outdoor education programs will be birding walks at the John Brockway Nature Preserve in Hopkinton and the McLane Center in Concord. (Birding walks at the Brockway Preserve are free to Hopkinton residents through an endowment from Dorothy Brockway Osborne.) Binocular rental is included with registration. Whether you’re a lifelong birder or have never picked up a pair of binoculars\, Devin hopes you join him for a nature walk! This walk will also feature a look at our new addition to our All Persons trail. DESCRIPTION:What do budding wildflowers\, metamorphosing frogs\, and migrating hawks have in common? They are all undergoing life cycle phases that can be affected by climate change. Have you ever made notes about the first peeper you heard calling\, the arrival of your first warbler\, or your first sighting of a mourning cloak butterfly? Then you have been monitoring phenology! Documenting stories in our own backyards contributes to the impacts of climate change. DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a bird-watching walk along the trails at the Massabesic Center in Auburn. Your guide will be Joe Mahoney\, an active bird-watcher for more than 15 years who has traveled all around the country to find and study birds. Joe works in public education and he enjoys teaching and sharing his enthusiasm for birds and nature with people of all ages. All skill levels are welcome. If you are new to bird-watching\, come and learn the basics. If you are an avid birder\, come to share your expertise with the group and compare notes with Joe. \nBinocular rental included with ticket. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. SUMMARY:Empty Skies: The Decline of Aerial Insectivores in the Northeast
DESCRIPTION:Join the NH Audubon Seacoast Chapter for their October in-person program: Empty Skies: The Decline of Aerial Insectivores in the\nNortheast \nAerial insectivores are those birds that feed primarily on insects captured in flight and include nightjars\, swifts and swallows. Many of these species\, particularly swallows and the Chimney Swift\, are experiencing significant population declines both in NH and across the Northeast and sometimes across their entire ranges. This program\, presented by Pam Hunt\, NH Audubon Avian Conservation Biologist\, provides an overview of these species’ biology and population trends with a focus on swallows. What are the threats faced by swallows in the Northeast and what is and can be done to conserve them? \nPam Hunt has been interested in birds since the tender age of 12\, when an uncle took her to Brigantine National Wildlife Refuge in NJ. She went on to earn a B.S. in biology from Cornell University\, an M.A. in zoology from the University of Montana and\, in 1995\, a Ph.D. from Dartmouth College. Pam came to NH Audubon in 2000 after five years as adjunct faculty at Colby-Sawyer College in New London\, NH. In her current position as Avian Conservation Biologist\, she works closely with NH Fish and Game to coordinate and prioritize bird research and monitoring in the state and also authored NH’s “State of the Birds” report. Specific areas of interest include habitat use by early successional birds (particularly whip-poor-wills)\, conservation of aerial insectivores\, and the effects of events outside the breeding season on long-distance migrants. Pam also coordinated the “NH Dragonfly Survey\,” a five-year project that mapped distributions of these insects throughout the state and remains active in the dragonfly field. \nIn person meetings are held at the Seacoast Science Center at Odiorne State Park\, Route 1A\, Rye\, NH. SUMMARY:Seacoast Chapter Field Trip - Hawk Watch at Pack Monadnock
DESCRIPTION:Join Phil Brown\, the Harris Center’s Bird Conservation Director\, for a half day of hawk watching at the Pack Monadnock Raptor Observatory in Peterborough. We will hope for a good mid-season migration flight which\, in mid-October\, can include several species of hawks and falcons as well as flocks of migrant Canada Geese\, songbirds\, and even scoters! \nLearn hawk watching ID tips from the experts and learn about the different migration strategies and behaviors of up to 15 migratory raptor species. During a visit to the hawk watch\, you’ll experience NH’s birding culture and immerse yourself in a long-standing community science project that is a partnership between the Harris Center and NH Audubon. \nMeet at the Observatory for the 10 am start time\, and stay as long as you’d like. The park usually closes by 4 pm in mid-October. Weather conditions may cancel. \nState park reservations with Miller State Park and a small fee are required for visiting Pack Monadnock. SUMMARY:Jeffreys Ledge Pelagic Birding Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon aboard MV Granite State as we explore Jeffreys Ledge\, 20 miles off the New Hampshire coast. This is an all-day expedition (between 8-10 hours at sea)\, departing from Rye Harbor\, to look for pelagic (ocean-going) seabirds on Jeffreys Ledge\, although we’ll also keep an eye out for whales and other marine life. Jeffreys Ledge is an undersea ridge running northeast from near Rockport\, Massachusetts to near Cape Elizabeth\, Maine.  Its steep sides produce upwellings of nutrient-rich waters that produce a lot of food for seabirds and marine life.    \nWhat we will see:\nFrom the upper deck\, a person with good binoculars can scan a circle of ocean a couple of miles across\, with a good chance of seeing groups of birds quite some distance away. On past fall trips\, we have seen four different species of Shearwater (Great\, Sooty\, Cory’s\, and Manx)\, Northern Gannets\, Red-necked Phalaropes in fall plumage\, Wilson’s Storm-petrel\, jaegers\, an array of near-shore species\, and random migrants. We’ve also seen several different species of whales and dolphins\, including Fin\, Minke\, Right\, and Humpback Whales\, Harbor Porpoises\, Atlantic White-Sided Dolphins\, and once a rare Sperm Whale on the outer edge of Jeffreys Ledge.     \nPresenter:\nRenowned birders and NH Audubon volunteers Steve and Jane Mirick will be our group leaders\, with Captain Pete Reynolds driving the boat. DESCRIPTION:Visit the McLane Center to see “The Balm for the Wounds We Bear” exhibit by Kathleen H. Peters! Kathleen works with many mediums as an artist – such as pottery\, pastels\, paint\, cement\, wood\, metal\, and glass. This exhibit showcases her paintings and appreciation for the beauty of simple things. Kathleen shares that her technical background in engineering has lead to her understanding material properties of the mediums she works with\, allowing her to be precise and produce high quality works of art. DESCRIPTION:This program examines the dramatic Bald Eagle population recovery in New Hampshire and describes management efforts and partnerships that have helped eagles. Chris Martin has been a raptor biologist for NH Audubon for more than three decades. His work focuses on recovery of the state’s endangered and threatened raptors in close collaboration with NH Fish & Game. He recruits\, trains\, and supervises an enthusiastic corps of NH Audubon volunteer field observers who monitor these species across the state.   \nThis presentation is available in a hybrid format.  You are welcome to join us in-person at the Massabesic Center in Auburn\, or virtually via Zoom!
