Join Levi Burford\, Errol Count Circle Coordinator\, for this webinar that will introduce you to butterflies of New Hampshire’s woodlands. Levi will also offer tips on a mindset when approaching the identification and counting of butterflies in forests and woodland edges. All butterfly enthusiasts are welcome\, with or without prior experience! DESCRIPTION:‘Simply Nature’ is an exhibit of a relatively small portion of Pierre Garand’s catalog of Nature photographs. For nearly sixty years\, Pierre’s primary photographic subject has been Nature. He considers Her to be the artist\, and he a mere agent\, exploring\, discovering\, recording and presenting Her masterworks. This exhibit comprises a tiny taste of Nature’s diversity\, beauty\, and even a little whimsy: Her landscapes\, flora\, fauna and the elements that support them. In most cases\, Pierre brings the viewer as close to the subject as he physically or optically can\, presenting them with a perspective or in a unique moment that the viewer may not otherwise experience. (All but one of these images were captured in New Hampshire at or near Pierre’s home just inland of the New Hampshire Seacoast region. None of the images are AI generated.) \nBarred Owl photographed by Pierra Garand.\n  \nBio: Pierre Garand has been making photographs\, drawing with light for nearly sixty years. With occasional diversions\, his primary subject has been the Natural World\, usually as close-up as he physically or optically can get. He considers Mother Nature to be an artist who challenges him to discover\, record and share Her amazing works. With the rising evidence of climate change in recent years\, he’s come to consider his photographs a record\, a visual history of a major transition in Nature. He continues to keep his eyes and ears open to the world around him for the chance to record Nature’s art\, whether already formed or in process – a stone with natural markings that look like a face\, or a pollinator busy feeding on a Goldenrod in full bloom. SUMMARY:Birding Outing at Deering Wildlife Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a birding outing along the trails at the Deering Wildlife Sanctuary in Deering\, NH! Deering is home to Black Fox Pond and some wetland habitat. We will look for early migrants\, such as Red-winged Blackbirds\, American Robins\, and Gray Catbirds. \nThis is an informal birding outing that begins at the sanctuary parking lot on Clement Hill Road and explores the trails with Paradise Point Center Coordinator and environmental educator Devin Guilfoyle. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nThis is a free event. Binocular rental is provided. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly uneven trails with some elevation change through grassy and wooded terrain. Trails may be soggy or muddy in the rainy season. DESCRIPTION:What is weather? Why is it sometimes hot and sometimes cold? Where do sunshine and rain come from? Accompany your 3-5 year-old at the John Brockway Nature Preserve as we learn about weather. \nThis program will begin at 10am and last about 45 minutes. Please plan to arrive earlier to ensure the program can start on time. This is an outdoor location with no bathroom facilities. Please dress children for the weather and be ready to walk on the trail\, sit on logs and the ground\, and dig in the dirt! \nPrograms will be canceled if poor weather is predicted during the program time; participants will be notified by email of cancellations. \nFor detailed directions to the preserve\, search for Brockway Pond on Google Maps\, or visit this webpage. \nThis program is free\, with a suggested donation of $5. DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 2023\, Kurk Dorsey and his family joined a tour of the Galapagos islands. In this illustrated lecture\, we will see some of the highlights of that trip\, learn some of the evolutionary history associated with the islands\, and hear about how he lost a wedding ring and found a rare bird\, almost at the same time. \nBio: Kurk Dorsey aspires to lead North America in submissions rejected by eBird moderators\, a skill that he has taken to several other countries. When he is not confused by species that really should not be that tricky\, he serves as the president of the New Hampshire Rare Birds Committee and the chair of the History Department at the University of New Hampshire\, where he teaches environmental history among other things.

DESCRIPTION:Birding outings with NH Audubon are starting up again! Led by local birder and Massabesic Center Advisory Committee member\, Joe Mahoney\, this walk will focus on bird species that brave New Hampshire’s winters\, including the Downy Woodpecker\, the Tufted Titmouse\, and the Dark-eyed Junco. We will meet at the front doors of the Massabesic Center to begin. \nThis is a free event with binocular rentals available. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly flat\, but uneven trails through grassy and wooded terrain. Trails may be soggy\, snowy\, or icy. DESCRIPTION:From the majestic White Mountains of the North\, to the rocky shores of the New Hampshire coast\, and even simply in his own backyard\, Cameron has searched far and wide to document the different species that inhabit the Granite State. From incredibly rare vagrant birds\, to the most common species you’d see walking down the street\, these photographs hope to show off the breadth of ecological diversity close to home. Each photo comes with a story: some are harrowing trips that took weeks to plan\, others just involve pure\, dumb luck\, but each encounter created an unforgettable moment. \nExamples of Cameron’s work.\nBio: Cameron is a wildlife photographer and a resident of Dover\, New Hampshire. He got his start in photography as a concert photographer and a photojournalist and developed a passion for birding during the summer of 2021. He now spends his free time helping run the New Hampshire Rare Bird Alert Groupme\, volunteering with New Hampshire Audubon and the Harris Center\, and photographing as much wildlife as possible. \n(Art exhibit viewing access may be restricted during private event rentals. SUMMARY:Painting the Natural Landscape Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Nature is all around us and artist Diane Crespo is drawn to capturing the essence of the landscape in her vivid oil paintings. From the mountains to the sea\, all across New England\, nature’s beauty is\never-changing and beckons to be painted. Certain elements such as water can bring about a feeling of calm in the ebb and flow of tidal marshes\, while the sky and light help to describe form and design that is\, in itself simple and complex. The changing seasons offer an abundance of opportunity to view the dappling of shadows across a field of green or the cool shadows laden on a winter’s snow. In ‘Painting the Natural Landscape’ you will discover scenes across New England through the eyes of the artist. \nBio: Diane Crespo is an academically trained landscape painter living in Southeast New Hampshire. She earned her BFA from New Hampshire Institute of Art in 2011. Prior to pursuing a fine art degree\, Diane painted only with pastels\, taking classes with a local pastel teacher. Diane paints primarily in oils and pastels\, and commonly paints over acrylic under-paintings or tonal under-paintings with oil paint. When her schedule allows\, Diane will start a painting outdoors and finish it in the studio or she will use it as a study for a future studio painting. \nLiving in New England\, there is endless inspiration for Diane’s paintings. As a nature lover\, Diane sees beauty from the coast to the mountains while she’s either walking the beach or hiking in the White Mountains. Diane’s paintings are in private collections worldwide\, many of which have been commissioned landscapes as well as pet portraits. Painting animals in pastel is also one of Diane’s passions. “Pastels are the perfect medium to achieve the softness of the fur.”Her paintings can be viewed in person by appointment or by chance at Diane Crespo Fine Art\, located at 27 Front Street\, Exeter\, New Hampshire\, or at many yearly shows she participates in. \n“My landscapes take viewers to many places\, some are familiar\, some are dreamlike….”\n~Diane Crespo

SUMMARY:Birding Outing at the McLane Center
DESCRIPTION:(Rescheduled from February 20) \nBirding outings with NH Audubon are starting up again! Our first one of the year is set to take place on February 22 at the McLane Center at 8 am. Led by Newfound Center coordinator Devin Guilfoyle\, this walk will focus on bird species that brave New Hampshire’s winters\, including the Downy Woodpecker\, the Tufted Titmouse\, and the Dark-eyed Junco. We will meet at the parking lot in the McLane Center in front of the main entrance. \nThis is a free event with binocular rentals available. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly flat\, but uneven trails through grassy and wooded terrain. Trails may be soggy\, snowy\, or icy. Dogs are not allowed on this walk.
