SUMMARY:Massabesic Gardens Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intimate guided tour of the gardens at the Massabesic Center in Auburn. We will lead you on a fun ramble of the grounds\, and dig into the history\, upkeep\, and future of each of our unique garden spaces. \nYou’ll learn about NH Audubon’s partnership with the University of New Hampshire Extension’s Master Gardener Program to create Demonstration Gardens that provide a place for sharing best practices in eco-friendly home and community gardening\, for human health and well-being and wildlife habitat. These gardens include spaces for pollinators\, birds\, butterflies\, veggies\, rainwater\, and an ornamental space that serves as the backdrop for wedding ceremonies. \nYou’ll also learn about our community partnership with the Massabesic Garden Club and their efforts to rehabilitate the space lovingly called the Barn Garden. \nLast but not least\, discover our plan for expanding the Garden for the Senses\, and take a peaceful pause in the Cathy Small Memorial Garden. \nYou’ll leave with an appreciation for the hard work that goes into our spaces by the team of over 40 volunteers who maintain our grounds. We’ll provide information for upcoming educational workshops and ways you can get involved with volunteering in our gardens. \nDress for walking in short grass on flat but uneven terrain. Bring your camera\, sunscreen\, bug spray\, and questions about creating pollinator habitat at your home. \nThis event is free to attend. DESCRIPTION:Meditations in Ink… The Nature of Asian Brush Painting by Bruce Iverson \nDescription: For 3\,000 years the Asian cultures of China\, Korea\, and Japan have expressed their love of Nature with simple\, yet\, refined tools…brush\, ink\, inkstone\, and handmade rice paper. \n“Meditations in Ink” is an exhibit capturing Nature as experienced by Bruce Iverson using these tools and techniques. Bruce’s work draws from these traditions\, particularly\, the expressive elegance of Sumi-e brushwork. These time-honored techniques resonate deeply with Iverson- not only for their visual beauty but for the way they demand mindfulness and calm. The tools of this art form allow him to express both the Chi (energy) and stillness of Nature with paintings of flowers\, birds\, calligraphy\, and landscapes. \nLotus pond painting featuring Bruce Iverson’s headshot.\nArtist’s Bio: As an artist\, I focus on creating artwork that reveals the natural world\, its diversity\, beauty\, and mystery. At the core of my work is a lifelong appreciation and respect for Nature and an understanding of my role within it…I only wish to experience\, learn\, and share! DESCRIPTION:Program: Butterflies Without Borders: Tracking Monarch Migration \nThe Monarch is a formerly abundant butterfly species that has experienced dramatic and widespread declines since the early 1990s. Conservation efforts are underway across the US to understand and take action to stop this decline. In this presentation\, we will examine the natural history of Monarchs\, explore some of the cutting-edge technologies and methods used to track Monarch movements and discuss the tracking data NH Audubon biologists have gathered from migrating Monarchs. \nBio: Lindsay Herlihy is a biologist and naturalist-educator with NH Audubon. She has been tagging Monarchs with NHA for three years and is taking the lead on the Monarch Motus tagging program in 2025.

SUMMARY:Birding Outing at Contoocook River Park
DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a birding outing along the trails at the Contoocook River Park in Concord! \nThis is an informal birding outing that begins the Contoocook River Park parking lot at the end of Electric Avenue. We will explore the trails with Newfound Center & Public Programs Coordinator Devin Guilfoyle. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nThis area is mostly forested habitat that is surrounded by the Contoocook River. Previous bird sightings here include American Robin\, Downy Woodpecker\, and Ruby-crowned Kinglet. \nThis is a free event. Binocular rental is provided. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly flat\, but uneven trails through wooded terrain. Trails may be soggy or muddy. Dogs are not allowed on this walk. This site does not have bathroom access. \nPlease review NH Audubon’s Outdoor Education Program Liability Release & Agreement Waiver before registering. SUMMARY:Jeffrey's Ledge Pelagic Birding Trip
DESCRIPTION:*Trip date rescheduled to Monday\, October 13 (original date October 12)* \nJoin NH Audubon aboard MV Granite State as we explore Jeffreys Ledge\, 20 miles off the New Hampshire coast. This is an all-day expedition (between 8-10 hours at sea)\, departing from Rye Harbor\, to look for pelagic (ocean-going) seabirds on Jeffreys Ledge\, although we’ll also keep an eye out for whales and other marine life. Jeffreys Ledge is an undersea ridge running northeast from near Rockport\, Massachusetts to near Cape Elizabeth\, Maine. Its steep sides produce upwellings of nutrient-rich waters that produce a lot of food for seabirds and marine life. \nWhat we will see: From the upper deck\, a person with good binoculars can scan a circle of ocean a couple of miles across\, with a good chance of seeing groups of birds quite some distance away. On past fall trips\, we have seen four different species of Shearwater (Great\, Sooty\, Cory’s\, and Manx)\, Northern Gannets\, Red-necked Phalaropes in fall plumage\, Wilson’s Storm-petrel\, jaegers\, an array of near-shore species\, and random migrants. We’ve also seen several different species of whales and dolphins\, including Fin\, Minke\, Right\, and Humpback Whales\, Harbor Porpoises\, Atlantic White-Sided Dolphins\, and once a rare Sperm Whale on the outer edge of Jeffreys Ledge. \nPresenter: Renowned birders and NH Audubon volunteers Steve and Jane Mirick will be our group leaders\, with Captain Pete Reynolds driving the boat. SUMMARY:Birding the Straits of Gibraltar with the Lakes Region Chapter
DESCRIPTION:Huge flocks of White Storks and Black Kites whirl over this dramatic and historic part of Spain. \nSurprisingly little visited\, this spring migration bottleneck concentrates phenomenal numbers of birds from Short-toed Eagles to Alpine Swifts\, and even the bizarre looking Eurasian Hoopoe and Northern Bald Ibis. \nBut wait\, there’s more! Roman ruins\, historic towns\, bull fighting rings\, orange groves\, and lunch at 4:00 p.m. are all part of the experience. Learn how and why\, and do a little hiding and seeking of your own\, in this installment in the Brockway Wee Explorers series! \nPrograms will begin at 10 a.m. and last about 45 minutes each. \nThis is an outdoor location with no bathroom facilities. Please dress children for the weather and be ready to walk on the trail\, sit on logs and the ground\, and dig in the dirt! SUMMARY:Birding Outing at the Massabesic Center
DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a birding outing along the trails at the Massabesic Center in Auburn\, NH! This is an informal birding outing that begins at Massabesic Center trailhead and explores the trails with local birder and Massabesic Center Advisory Committee member\, Joe Mahoney. We will meet at the front doors of the main building. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nThe Massabesic Wildlife Refuge is home to many species who prefer open space and forest edges. You may see species such as Eastern Bluebirds\, Red-shouldered Hawks\, and Bald Eagles in the fields and on the lake. \nThis is a free event. Binocular rental is provided. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly flat\, but uneven trails through grassy and wooded terrain. Trails may be soggy or muddy in the rainy season. Dogs are not allowed on this walk. \nPlease review NH Audubon’s Outdoor Education Program Liability Release & Agreement Waiver before registering. DESCRIPTION:Meditations in Ink… The Nature of Asian Brush Painting by Bruce Iverson \nDescription: For 3\,000 years the Asian cultures of China\, Korea\, and Japan have expressed their love of Nature with simple\, yet\, refined tools…brush\, ink\, inkstone\, and handmade rice paper. \n“Meditations in Ink” is an exhibit capturing Nature as experienced by Bruce Iverson using these tools and techniques. Bruce’s work draws from these traditions\, particularly\, the expressive elegance of Sumi-e brushwork. These time-honored techniques resonate deeply with Iverson- not only for their visual beauty but for the way they demand mindfulness and calm. The tools of this art form allow him to express both the Chi (energy) and stillness of Nature with paintings of flowers\, birds\, calligraphy\, and landscapes. \nLotus pond painting featuring Bruce Iverson’s headshot.\nArtist’s Bio: As an artist\, I focus on creating artwork that reveals the natural world\, its diversity\, beauty\, and mystery. At the core of my work is a lifelong appreciation and respect for Nature and an understanding of my role within it…I only wish to experience\, learn\, and share! Hopefully\, my work speaks to others who might also resonate with this view. Four and a half billion years of evolution has brought much to be seen and appreciated! A tree’s bark\, a breaking wave\, a dragonfly’s wing\, passing clouds…. I find these things (and more) exquisitely beautiful and fascinating. As a child\, growing up in New England\, I had a basement laboratory where I explored\, experimented\, and invented. As a painter (since 1972)\, my studio and all of the outdoors have become my laboratory of continuing discovery and expression. \nAs you explore my work\, you will find it involves painting and printmaking techniques from East Asia (China\, Korea\, and Japan). I fir le traditional Asian aesthetic fascinating and resonant. As a “tool user” I have found the tools of East Asian art to be in a class of their own… refined\, elegant\, and a joy to work with. If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nMcLane provides various types of bird habitats\, including forest\, grassland\, and edge habitats. We can expect to see yearlong residents of New Hampshire\, including White-breasted Nuthatches\, Downy Woodpeckers\, and Wild Turkeys. \nThis is a free event. Binocular rental is provided.
