SUMMARY:Brockway Nature Outing for Preschool Ages
DESCRIPTION:Join New Hampshire Audubon at Brockway Nature Preserve in Hopkinton for nature exploration with your 3-5 year old. The programs will be held the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month. Each Tuesday will be an exciting theme relating to the seasons and wildlife (see below). It will begin at 10am and run for about 45 minutes. \nThis is an outdoor location with no bathroom facilities. DESCRIPTION:This workshop is the first in a series of participatory workshops that will be held at least monthly at the Massabesic Audubon Center (MAC) in Auburn. The Demonstration/Teaching gardens at MAC are managed in partnership with the UNH Extension Master Gardener Program. All workshops are open to the public as a way to share best practices in gardening. See below for future workshop information. \nSeed Starting for Gardeners – February 16\, 6:30-8:00 pm \nAt the Massabesic Audubon Center in Auburn or via Zoom (in-person participation limited to 20 people) \nDuring this workshop attendees will learn the benefits and best practices for starting plants from seeds and cuttings. Attendees will learn about how to get started\, successful germination requirements\, different growing methods and mediums\, light and temperature requirements\, overcoming common problems\, hardening off seedlings for transplanting into the garden\, and best practices to ensure seedlings successfully grow into healthy mature plants. \nThis workshop is designed for beginning gardeners or gardeners who are new to raising plants from seeds. Pre-registration is required. SUMMARY:A Multi-Regional Assessment of Eastern Whip-poor-will
DESCRIPTION:A Multi-Regional Assessment of Eastern Whip-poor-will (Antrostomus vociferus) Occupancy Within Managed Forests Using Autonomous Recording Units \nWednesday\, February 9 \nOver the past half century\, many eastern forest birds have experienced significant population declines. These declines have in part been attributed to habitat loss and degradation. State and federal agencies have initiated conservation efforts to improve habitat conditions for several forest dependent wildlife. The recent availability of low-cost autonomous recording units (ARUs) has shown great promise to facilitate monitoring\, particularly for species that are logistically difficult to survey (e.g.\, nocturnal species). A collaborative research project involving research scientists from the University of Massachusetts\, Indiana University of Pennsylvania\, SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry\, University of Pittsburgh and University of Maryland deployed ARUs across hundreds of managed forests from North Carolina to Maine to assess whip-poor-will occupancy. \nIn this presentation\, project lead Jeffery (JT) Larkin will discuss whip-poor-will ecology and share initial monitoring results. \nVisit the Seacoast Chapter website for further details and to register for the free zoom talk.

Access to\, and care of parks\, conservation lands\, gardens and greenways and wilderness areas is critical for living things to thrive. Humans experience multiple connections with nature which are needed for both personal and population health and well-being. These and other ideas will be presented and discussed in the context of personal and collective choices for meeting the climate crisis. \nRegister for this free webinar through Zoom. \n \nThis webinar is part of the year-long Exploring Connections to and Stewardship of the Natural World talks. This series is supported by a grant through the NH Humanities Council and aims to provide a public and personal space for the examination of environmental ethics\, fostering a deeper understanding of\, appreciation for\, and care of\, our natural world. McCahan is a Professor at Plymouth State University and serves as the program coordinator for the Public Health degree program. She received a B.A.\, M.A. and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the UC San Diego and Santa Barbara followed by Post-doctoral training Immunopathology at the National Jewish Hospital in Denver\, Colorado\, and a research/teaching position at the University of Hawaii. She made a life pivot in 1983 and joined the health fitness industry as a certified Health Fitness Instructor. She also received advanced training as a Physical Activity in Public Health practitioner. She has taught a wide variety of courses across 30+ years at PSU in nutrition\, physical activity and health\, exercise science and public health\, and serves on several local agency boards and a member of the Pemi Climate Crisis Coalition. She is a Permaculture practitioner\, avid walker\, open-water swimmer and forest bather! \n

Her children’s book\, Muskrat Will Be Swimming\, was a Smithsonian Notable Book and won the Skipping Stones Award for Children’s Environmental Literature. She has won Fellowships in Poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Massachusetts Artists Fellowship Program\, and is a three-time fellow at MacDowell. Savageau has mentored Native writers through Wordcraft Circle of Native Poets and Storytellers\, and Gedakina\, and is former editor of Dawnland Voices 2.0.  She teaches Indigenous literatures and creative writing at the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Brockway Nature Outing for Preschool Ages
DESCRIPTION:Join New Hampshire Audubon at Brockway Nature Preserve in Hopkinton for nature exploration with your 3-5 year old. The programs will be held the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month. Each Tuesday will be an exciting theme relating to the seasons and wildlife (see below). It will begin at 10am and run for about 45 minutes. \nThis is an outdoor location with no bathroom facilities. SUMMARY:New Hampshire's Winter Birds
DESCRIPTION:NH Audubon’s “Backyard Winter Bird Survey” is a citizen science project that has been collecting data on the state’s birds since 1967. In this program\, Dr. Pamela Hunt uses the Survey’s data to illustrate how populations of our common winter birds have been changing over time. In the process\, we’ll explore many other aspects of bird biology. \n**This event is now a Zoom event (no longer in-person): \nRegister in advance for this meeting. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nBio: Pam Hunt has been interested in birds since the tender age of 12\, when an uncle took her to Brigantine National Wildlife Refuge in NJ. She went on to earn a B.S. in biology from Cornell University\, M.A. in zoology from the University of Montana\, and a Ph.D. from Dartmouth College in 1995. Pam came to NH Audubon in 2000 after five years as adjunct faculty at Colby-Sawyer College in New London. In her current position as Avian Conservation Biologist\, she works closely with NH Fish and Game to coordinate and prioritize bird research and monitoring in the state\, and also authored NH’s “State of the Birds” report. Specific areas of interest include habitat use by early successional birds (particularly whip-poor-wills)\, conservation of aerial insectivores (e.g.\, swifts and swallows)\, and the effects of events outside the breeding season on long-distance migrants. Pam also coordinated the “NH Dragonfly Survey”\, a five-year project that mapped distributions of these insects throughout the state\, and remains active in the dragonfly field. \nThe Seacoast Chapter meets monthly on the second Wednesday except the months of July and August unless there is a special program. 7 pm social and the meetings begin at 7:30 pm unless otherwise noted (entrance doors locked at 7:45 pm). The public is welcome free of charge. Meetings are held at the Seacoast Science Center at Odiorne State Park\, Route 1A\, Rye\, NH. Wheelchair accessible. SUMMARY:Brockway Nature Outing for Preschool Ages
DESCRIPTION:Join New Hampshire Audubon at Brockway Nature Preserve in Hopkinton for nature exploration with your 3-5 year old. The programs will be held the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month. Each Tuesday will be an exciting theme relating to the seasons and wildlife (see below). It will begin at 10am and run for about 45 minutes. \nThis is an outdoor location with no bathroom facilities. Please dress children for the weather and be ready to walk on the trail\, sit on logs and the ground\, and dig in the dirt! \nPrograms will be cancelled if poor weather is predicted during the program time\, participants will be notified by email.  \nDirections: To find the meeting circle\, park at the Brockway Nature Preserve parking area along Farrington Corners Road in Hopkinton\, then follow the entrance trail across the bridge to the circle. Visit the NH Audubon Massabesic Center\, grab a warm cup of cocoa\, and find out! You will meet some of our animal ambassadors and learn the survival strategies of snakes\, turtles\, frogs\, and more\, all from the comfort of our Nature Room. Hot beverages included! \nPrice: $12 for members\, $15 for non-members \nAll are welcome\, content is best for ages 5-13. \nRegistration cap: 30 people\, masks required.
