DESCRIPTION:Meditations in Ink… The Nature of Asian Brush Painting by Bruce Iverson \nDescription: For 3\,000 years the Asian cultures of China\, Korea\, and Japan have expressed their love of Nature with simple\, yet\, refined tools…brush\, ink\, inkstone\, and handmade rice paper. \n“Meditations in Ink” is an exhibit capturing Nature as experienced by Bruce Iverson using these tools and techniques. Bruce’s work draws from these traditions\, particularly\, the expressive elegance of Sumi-e brushwork. These time-honored techniques resonate deeply with Iverson- not only for their visual beauty but for the way they demand mindfulness and calm. The tools of this art form allow him to express both the Chi (energy) and stillness of Nature with paintings of flowers\, birds\, calligraphy\, and landscapes. \nLotus pond painting featuring Bruce Iverson’s headshot.\nArtist’s Bio: As an artist\, I focus on creating artwork that reveals the natural world\, its diversity\, beauty\, and mystery. At the core of my work is a lifelong appreciation and respect for Nature and an understanding of my role within it…I only wish to experience\, learn\, and share! SUMMARY:Birding Outing on the Northern Rail Trail in Boscawen
DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a birding outing on the Northern Recreational Rail Trail! This outing will be led by Newfound Center & Public Programs Coordinator Devin Guilfoyle. We will walk a small portion of this trail in Boscawen\, which goes through field\, forest\, and river habitats. Possible bird sightings include Canada Goose\, Great Blue Heron\, and American Goldfinch. Parking is available at the Boscawen Park & Ride by the Hannah Dustin Memorial off of I-93 Exit 17 in Boscawen. \nThis is a free event with binocular rentals available. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk about 2 miles over mostly flat\, paved trails\, with a slight hill to get from the parking lot to the trail. This trail is shared with other hikers\, runners\, and cyclists. Dogs are not allowed on this walk. Please review NH Audubon’s Outdoor Education Program Liability Release & Agreement Waiver before registering. RSVPing to this event indicates that you agree to the waiver’s terms and conditions.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a round-up of sparrows and other fall migrants at the Community Gardens off Clinton Street in Concord. Fourteen species of sparrows have been seen here\, more than any single location in the state\, including both Clay-colored and Vesper Sparrows.  Dickcissel\, Blue Grosbeak\, and Sedge Wren have also made appearances here.  Meet at 7:30 at Birch Street. DESCRIPTION:Meditations in Ink… The Nature of Asian Brush Painting by Bruce Iverson \nDescription: For 3\,000 years the Asian cultures of China\, Korea\, and Japan have expressed their love of Nature with simple\, yet\, refined tools…brush\, ink\, inkstone\, and handmade rice paper. \n“Meditations in Ink” is an exhibit capturing Nature as experienced by Bruce Iverson using these tools and techniques. Bruce’s work draws from these traditions\, particularly\, the expressive elegance of Sumi-e brushwork. These time-honored techniques resonate deeply with Iverson- not only for their visual beauty but for the way they demand mindfulness and calm. The tools of this art form allow him to express both the Chi (energy) and stillness of Nature with paintings of flowers\, birds\, calligraphy\, and landscapes. \nLotus pond painting featuring Bruce Iverson’s headshot.\nArtist’s Bio: As an artist\, I focus on creating artwork that reveals the natural world\, its diversity\, beauty\, and mystery. SUMMARY:Gifts of the Garden: Engaging with the Experts
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Massabesic Center to meet the team who are outstanding in their fields and know all the dirt. No need to herb your enthusiasm! Bring your pressing questions about plants\, find your inner peas\, discover inspiration for laying down roots at home\, or just dig the blooms! \nOur volunteer team of UNH Extension Master Gardeners like to have fun and teach others about what it takes to create and maintain the luscious\, wildlife-friendly gardens on the grounds. These informal meet and greet events are the perfect way to learn about getting involved in volunteer gardening opportunities with NH Audubon\, and about ways you can duplicate our gardens in your own backyard\, whether you have an acre or a patio pot. \nThe beautiful gardens on site include pollinator and bird-friendly plants\, a rain garden space\, vegetable gardens\, raised beds\, and more. As an ongoing partnership between New Hampshire Audubon and University of New Hampshire Extension’s Master Gardener Program\, Massabesic’s Demonstration Gardens provide a place for sharing best practices in eco-friendly home and community gardening\, which enhance human health and well-being and wildlife habitat. \nDress for walking in short grass on flat but uneven terrain. Sunscreen and personal insect repellant are recommended. Building hours (and bathroom access) are 11am to 5pm\, but come early before the heat of the day chases the gardeners away. Visit the gift shop and meet our animal ambassadors after you spend your morning exploring the gardens. Consider packing a lunch to enjoy at one of the picnic tables surrounding the gardens. Children are welcomed and encouraged! \nGardeners will not be on site during inclement weather\, but visitors are still welcomed. \nThis event is free to attend. DESCRIPTION:What’s happening to the green leaves? For this program\, we will be looking at what happens to the leaves on the trees as autumn begins in New England. \nPrograms will begin at 10 a.m. and last about 45 minutes each. \nThis is an outdoor location with no bathroom facilities. Please dress children for the weather and be ready to walk on the trail\, sit on logs and the ground\, and dig in the dirt! Please also review NH Audubon’s Outdoor Education Program Liability Release & Agreement Waiver before registering. \nPrograms will be cancelled if poor weather is predicted during the program time; participants will be notified by phone of cancellations. \nTo find the meeting circle\, park at the Brockway Nature Preserve parking area along Farrington Corners Road in Hopkinton\, then follow the entrance trail across the bridge to the circle. DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a birding outing along the trails at the Mine Falls Park in Nashua! \nThis is an informal birding outing that begins the Mine Falls Park parking lot and explores the trails with local birder and Massabesic Center Advisory Committee member Joe Mahoney. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nThis area is home to many wetland and forest species. In the past\, we have seen birds such as Great Blue Herons\, a variety of ducks\, and Pileated Woodpeckers. \nThis is a free event. Binocular rental is provided. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly flat\, but uneven trails through grassy and wooded terrain. Trails may be soggy or muddy in the rainy season. Dogs are not allowed on this walk. DESCRIPTION:Meditations in Ink… The Nature of Asian Brush Painting by Bruce Iverson \nDescription: For 3\,000 years the Asian cultures of China\, Korea\, and Japan have expressed their love of Nature with simple\, yet\, refined tools…brush\, ink\, inkstone\, and handmade rice paper. \n“Meditations in Ink” is an exhibit capturing Nature as experienced by Bruce Iverson using these tools and techniques. Bruce’s work draws from these traditions\, particularly\, the expressive elegance of Sumi-e brushwork. These time-honored techniques resonate deeply with Iverson- not only for their visual beauty but for the way they demand mindfulness and calm. At the core of my work is a lifelong appreciation and respect for Nature and an understanding of my role within it…I only wish to experience\, learn\, and share! Hopefully\, my work speaks to others who might also resonate with this view. Four and a half billion years of evolution has brought much to be seen and appreciated! A tree’s bark\, a breaking wave\, a dragonfly’s wing\, passing clouds…. I find these things (and more) exquisitely beautiful and fascinating. As a child\, growing up in New England\, I had a basement laboratory where I explored\, experimented\, and invented. As a painter (since 1972)\, my studio and all of the outdoors have become my laboratory of continuing discovery and expression. \nAs you explore my work\, you will find it involves painting and printmaking techniques from East Asia (China\, Korea\, and Japan). Webster. \nThis exhibit showcases the natural beauty of New England’s change of seasons – especially New Hampshire – with paintings inspired by what visions catch John’s eye. \nFor over 40 years\, just as photography has changed from film to digital\, he adapts his mediums like nature adapts. Please allow this exhibition to take you on a visual journey through his artwork. John has always found art to be an outlet to explore\, create\, and meet others. He enjoys making people happy and feeling moved by his creations. John prays you experience the natural beauty of his work\, and if a piece speaks to you\, he will be more than blessed to share his thought process. \nArtist’s Bio: John began his artistic path in trade school and honed his photography skills during his service in the U.S. Air Force (1967–1968\, Vietnam). DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intimate guided tour of the gardens at the Massabesic Center in Auburn. We will lead you on a fun ramble of the grounds\, and dig into the history\, upkeep\, and future of each of our unique garden spaces. \nYou’ll learn about NH Audubon’s partnership with the University of New Hampshire Extension’s Master Gardener Program to create Demonstration Gardens that provide a place for sharing best practices in eco-friendly home and community gardening\, for human health and well-being and wildlife habitat. These gardens include spaces for pollinators\, birds\, butterflies\, veggies\, rainwater\, and an ornamental space that serves as the backdrop for wedding ceremonies. \nYou’ll also learn about our community partnership with the Massabesic Garden Club and their efforts to rehabilitate the space lovingly called the Barn Garden. \nLast but not least\, discover our plan for expanding the Garden for the Senses\, and take a peaceful pause in the Cathy Small Memorial Garden. \nYou’ll leave with an appreciation for the hard work that goes into our spaces by the team of over 40 volunteers who maintain our grounds. We’ll provide information for upcoming educational workshops and ways you can get involved with volunteering in our gardens. \nDress for walking in short grass on flat but uneven terrain. Bring your camera\, sunscreen\, bug spray\, and questions about creating pollinator habitat at your home. \nThis event is free to attend. DESCRIPTION:Program: Butterflies Without Borders: Tracking Monarch Migration \nThe Monarch is a formerly abundant butterfly species that has experienced dramatic and widespread declines since the early 1990s. Conservation efforts are underway across the US to understand and take action to stop this decline. In this presentation\, we will examine the natural history of Monarchs\, explore some of the cutting-edge technologies and methods used to track Monarch movements and discuss the tracking data NH Audubon biologists have gathered from migrating Monarchs. \nBio: Lindsay Herlihy is a biologist and naturalist-educator with NH Audubon. She has been tagging Monarchs with NHA for three years and is taking the lead on the Monarch Motus tagging program in 2025.
