SUMMARY:20th Annual Migratory Bird Day Walk at Pondicherry
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday May 17\, 2022 \nExplore Pondicherry Wildlife Sanctuary with Friends of Pondicherry! Join us for a Migratory Bird Day Walk at the Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge. We will meet at the overlook at Airport Marsh on Airport Road in Whitefield at 7am to look for waterfowl and grassland birds. We expect to see Bobolinks\, Savanah Sparrows\, and several warbler species. At around 8am\, we will drive over to the Pondicherry Trailhead at 289 Airport Road and bird the 1.5 miles to Cherry Pond. At Cherry Pond\, we will take a side trip to Moorhen Marsh for Marsh Wrens. We will also bird the Little Cherry Pond Trail looking for Black-backed Woodpeckers and Cape May Warblers. On a good day at this time of year\, we can expect to see up to 20 species of warblers and 80 or more total species. We will finish the hike by mid-afternoon\, although you are welcome to stay as long as you like. \nThe walk is free\, and we will have free 2022 migratory bird day posters available. This year’s theme is Light Pollution and how it affects birds and other wildlife. The total walking distance will be 3-5 miles depending on the side trips you take from Cherry Pond. Most walking will be on a flat rail trail or the easy and flat Little Cherry Pond Trail. \nBring binoculars\, water\, lunch\, and clothing for the weather\, and be prepared for black flies. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Zoom for a discussion on The State of NH’s Birds and an introduction to Big Day by Dr. Pamela Hunt\, from 7-8pm on Thursday\, May 12\, 2022. Registration closes at 6:30pm on May 12.\n \nIn the last 50 years\, scientists estimate that North America has lost roughly 3 billion birds\, meaning that there are only three quarters as many birds around as there used to be. New Hampshire Audubon has been tracking bird populations for almost as long\, and in our “State of the Birds” report we present a summary of how birds are doing here in the Granite State. Almost 300 species occur regularly here\, and this report outlines general population trends\, major threats facing birds and their habitats\, and some of the conservation strategies that might help them recover. DESCRIPTION:Seacoast Chapter Program \nWednesday\, May 11\n \nYou know the basics\, so let’s focus on taking things to the next level. This  interactive program by David Blezard will teach different tricks and tips\, as we spend some time getting to know some of the more challenging groups of birds to identify within the northeastern US: sparrows\, flycatchers\, warblers\, vireos\, and more. Brush up your skills just in time for the spring migration. \nBio: David Blezard started birding in New Hampshire when he first took UNH’s Ornithology course 30 years ago. He then went on to be a teaching assistant for that course\, became involved with the Seacoast Chapter of NH Audubon\, and has given many talks about birds and birding since. DESCRIPTION:Join New Hampshire Audubon at Brockway Nature Preserve in Hopkinton for nature exploration with your 3-5 year old. The programs will be held the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month. Each Tuesday will be an exciting theme relating to the seasons and wildlife (see below). It will begin at 10am and run for about 45 minutes. \nThis is an outdoor location with no bathroom facilities. DESCRIPTION:One of the top 10 birding spots in New Hampshire\, this walk will traverse Rochester city park trails along the Cocheco River and around the former wastewater treatment settling ponds. Meet at the Pickering Ponds parking area at 7am. The entrance is about a mile south of the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on Pickering Road (opposite mailbox #374). SUMMARY:Transit to Trails Bus from Manchester to Massabesic Center May 7
DESCRIPTION:Manchester Transit Authority\, together with The Nature Conservancy in New Hampshire\, is launching Transit to Trails\, a pilot program providing transportation to walking and hiking trails\, state parks and water destinations to Manchester residents utilizing the city bus service for $5: the price of a bus ticket. \nTransit to Trails is a seasonal service that will operate on the first Saturday of each month beginning May 7 through September 3\, 2022. Riders can purchase an excursion pass at Veteran’s Park the day of the event\, board the bus and be transported to outdoor spaces within 30 minutes of the heart of the city. \nNH Audubon’s Massabesic Center is the first stop! Transit to Trails will visit the Center on Saturday\, May 7\, and we will have the Center opened for this special day from 9am-5pm\, with access to the Reptile Room\, Nature Store\, and bathrooms. Trails and gardens are open dawn to dusk. Early birds who arrive to the Center before 11am will have access to the Nature Interpreted Art Exhibition. \nAdditional Transit to Trails locations this summer include Bear Brook State Park on June 4\, the US Army Corps of Engineers’ Elm Brook Park on July 2\, Pawtuckaway State Park on August 6\, and Fox State Forest on September 3. On those mornings\, riders can purchase excursion passes for $5 each (cash or credit) at Veteran’s Park beginning at 8:30am. Riders should note that some New Hampshire State Park locations have entry fees\, which are not included in the bus fare. Buses will depart the park at 9:00am\, 11:00am and 1:00pm. DESCRIPTION:Pollinator Series: Wednesday\, April 27: 7pm – 8:15pm \nRegistration Link \nJoin Anusha Shankar\, a Rose Postdoctoral Fellow at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, and a National Geographic Explorer and Young Leader who has been studying hummingbirds and their amazing adaptations. \nHummingbirds live fast. They have among the highest metabolic rates of all vertebrates\, and must eat constantly to stay alive. Their existence is closely tied to the availability of their food resources – nectar plants and insects. What do hummingbirds do when they can’t see their food plants at night or eat? Do they starve\, or perhaps… go into a hibernation-like state? Find out some of the surprising nightlife of hummingbirds! \nBio: Anusha Shankar studies hummingbirds as a Rose Postdoctoral Fellow at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. She is fascinated by hummingbirds’ ability to use a hibernation-like state called torpor to save energy at night. She is investigating how they can get cold (50°F) and rewarm safely every night\, without damaging organs like their hearts and brains. During her PhD\, Anusha captured hummingbird nightlife with infrared video\, and before that tracked king cobras and studied giant birds—hornbills—in India. Anusha is also a National Geographic Explorer and Young Leader and loves mentoring students\, dancing salsa\, bachata\, and swing\, and reading fiction. \nNew Hampshire Audubon Pollinator Speaker Series: Celebrating and Engaging in Pollinator Conservation \nJoin New Hampshire Audubon for our 2022 Pollinator Webinar series as we celebrate Pollinator Conservation. This series seeks to inspire involvement and engagement in pollinator conservation through close focus programs that will allow participants to gain a deeper understanding and knowledge of pollinators and the plants they depend on. Programs are free to the public\, streamed via Zoom\, YouTube\, and Facebook Live. SUMMARY:Earth Day Celebration April 23\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:On April 23\, 2022 NH Audubon Massabesic Center is having their Earth Day celebration! We will celebrate planet Earth with a variety of family-friendly activities\, while also learning how to conserve wildlife and natural resources. Activities include guided nature walks\, bluebird nest-box building\, animal ambassador presentations\, master gardener demonstrations\, children’s story time\, and crafts. \nNew this year: we will have an American Sign Language interpreter on hand! \nWhere: NH Audubon Massabesic Center in Auburn \nWhen: April 23 at 10am-4pm \nPrice: $10 for a family of 4 (members)\, $15 for a family of 4 (non-members). Each family of 4 gets a birdhouse kit as well. \nRegistration times will be staggered by every hour starting at 10am. Each hour is capped at 20 families. With a few simple changes to your landscaping practices\, you can: \n\nIncrease wildlife variety\, including birds\, in your yard\nDecrease time spent on mowing and other yard chores\nReduce or eliminate watering\n\n  \nNew Hampshire Audubon Pollinator Speaker Series: Celebrating and Engaging in Pollinator Conservation \nJoin New Hampshire Audubon for our 2022 Pollinator Webinar series as we celebrate Pollinator Conservation. This series seeks to inspire involvement and engagement in pollinator conservation through close focus programs that will allow participants to gain a deeper understanding and knowledge of pollinators and the plants they depend on. Programs are free to the public\, streamed via Zoom\, YouTube\, and Facebook Live.
