DESCRIPTION:Pollinator Series: Wednesday\, April 27: 7pm – 8:15pm \nRegistration Link \nJoin Anusha Shankar\, a Rose Postdoctoral Fellow at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, and a National Geographic Explorer and Young Leader who has been studying hummingbirds and their amazing adaptations. \nHummingbirds live fast. They have among the highest metabolic rates of all vertebrates\, and must eat constantly to stay alive. Their existence is closely tied to the availability of their food resources – nectar plants and insects. What do hummingbirds do when they can’t see their food plants at night or eat? Do they starve\, or perhaps… go into a hibernation-like state? Find out some of the surprising nightlife of hummingbirds! \nBio: Anusha Shankar studies hummingbirds as a Rose Postdoctoral Fellow at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. She is fascinated by hummingbirds’ ability to use a hibernation-like state called torpor to save energy at night. She is investigating how they can get cold (50°F) and rewarm safely every night\, without damaging organs like their hearts and brains. During her PhD\, Anusha captured hummingbird nightlife with infrared video\, and before that tracked king cobras and studied giant birds—hornbills—in India. Anusha is also a National Geographic Explorer and Young Leader and loves mentoring students\, dancing salsa\, bachata\, and swing\, and reading fiction. \nNew Hampshire Audubon Pollinator Speaker Series: Celebrating and Engaging in Pollinator Conservation \nJoin New Hampshire Audubon for our 2022 Pollinator Webinar series as we celebrate Pollinator Conservation. This series seeks to inspire involvement and engagement in pollinator conservation through close focus programs that will allow participants to gain a deeper understanding and knowledge of pollinators and the plants they depend on. Programs are free to the public\, streamed via Zoom\, YouTube\, and Facebook Live. SUMMARY:Walden Warming: Climate Change Comes to Thoreau's Concord
DESCRIPTION:Seacoast Chapter Program \nWednesday\, April 13\n \nHenry David Thoreau was a climate change scientist! For the past 18 years\, presenter Professor Richard Primack and his team have been using Thoreau’s records from the 1850s and other Massachusetts data sources to document the earlier flowering and leafing out times of plants\, the earlier flight times of butterflies and the more variable response of migratory birds. Plants in Concord are also changing in abundance due to a warming climate. This work is now being extended to the neglected autumn season. What would Thoreau tell us to do about global warming if he were alive today? \nBio: Richard Primack is a Professor at Boston University with a specialization in plant ecology and conservation. He has written four widely used conservation biology textbooks; local co-authors helped to produce 38 translations with local examples. He was Editor-in-Chief of the journal Biological Conservation and served as President of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation. His research has been featured in the New York Times\, the Boston Globe\, and Nation Geographic\, and he is often interviewed on National Public Radio. DESCRIPTION:Get involved in a citizen science project to monitor field-nesting birds at NH Audubon’s Massabesic Center!  This workshop focuses on Eastern Bluebirds\, and will teach you identification\, natural history\, conservation status and how to collect data as a Bluebird Trail Monitor.  \nWe will begin in the classroom at 10am with a break for lunch (please bring your own lunch and water). After lunch\, we’ll head outside to learn the trail\, clean up the nest boxes\, and practice field identification of early season birds. \nNH Audubon Massabesic Center is home to almost 100 monitored nest boxes. Volunteer monitors are expected to contribute one to two hours each week from April to August to record data in their designated sections. DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a birding walk along the trails at Massabesic Center (MAC) in Auburn. \nRed-bellied Woodpecker\, by Pam Hunt.\nThis is an hour-long\, informal birding walk that begins at MAC and explores the trails with Slater\, Massabesic Center’s Education Coordinator. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nCost: $8 Members/$10 Non-members. With vivid images and practical advice\, birder and entomologist Bryan Pfeiffer will persuade you to aim your binoculars toward butterflies\, dragonflies\, fireflies\, tiger beetles and other glittering insects\, which E.O.Wilson calls “the little things that run the world.” \nBio: A writer\, biologist and boy explorer\, Bryan Pfeiffer has studied and photographed nature\, mostly birds and insects\, from the tropics to above the Arctic Circle. His essays have appeared in The New York Times\, The Boston Globe\, Aeon magazine\, Orion\, Northern Woodlands\, Field & Stream and many other places. His latest adventures include photographing rare butterflies for the State of Maine. SUMMARY:Brockway Nature Outing for Preschool Ages
DESCRIPTION:Join New Hampshire Audubon at Brockway Nature Preserve in Hopkinton for nature exploration with your 3-5 year old. The programs will be held the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month. Each Tuesday will be an exciting theme relating to the seasons and wildlife (see below). It will begin at 10am and run for about 45 minutes. \nThis is an outdoor location with no bathroom facilities. Please dress children for the weather and be ready to walk on the trail\, sit on logs and the ground\, and dig in the dirt! \nPrograms will be cancelled if poor weather is predicted during the program time\, participants will be notified by email.  \nDirections: To find the meeting circle\, park at the Brockway Nature Preserve parking area along Farrington Corners Road in Hopkinton\, then follow the entrance trail across the bridge to the circle.
